Read this book if you plan to get a puppy By SKL My kids keep asking me about getting a dog and I decided that before I make a decision I will read about how to take care of a puppy. This book gives plenty of details on how to raise a puppy, train it and make it a part of a family. I am still not sure about final decision, but I definitely have more infotmation.

Review "The first thing you'll notice when you look at Amy's book is that it's got a lot of patterns--25 in all....Another thing that you notice right away is the unbelievable variety of styles and techniques used in the patterns. Lace, colorwork, cables, embellishment, texture...it's all included! If you like regular mittens, you can find them; if you like wristers with individual fingers, you've got it; if you want a decorative wrister, you'll find options." (Carol Sulcoski Black Bunny Fibers 2015-06-24)"Crocheted Mitts and Mittens features 25 diverse projects, from bobbles to lace to robots!...The step-by-step instructions and photos guide you through each step and technique, so you can crochet your mitts quickly and with confidence." (Interweave Crochet 2015-09-01)"There are so many reasons to get your hands on this book. The results make great gifts, you can use stash yarn on many of the gloves and they are small/portable to take with you on the go. Last but not least, they look great on." 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Mitts a hit! By Cie Mathis I got this book from my library prior to purchasing it so I could review the patterns. I prefer knitting to crocheting but the patterns in this book may have changed my mind. Ms Gunderson uses some lace weight yarns to produce some fingerless gloves that are beautiful and original. There are also patterns that use heavier weight yarns. There should be something for everyone regardless of age. There are hip biker gloves and the beautiful Victorian ones shown on the cover and everything in between.I never buy a book expecting to like all the patterns but as long as I like the majority of them, I will buy the book. This one is a keeper.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Unique Crochet Designs! By Kathryn Vercillo What really impressed me about this crochet book was that the crochet patterns here are truly unique. Amy really went above and beyond to design art for the hands with patterns that are unlike anything else that's out there. This is obvious when you open the book and see that the very first crochet pattern there is called Lederhosen for the Hands!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Five Stars By Masha Pogorielova It's amazing! Cool designs! Easy to follow instructions!

Inner Wild Ancestors Apron is easy to knit in hand-dyed Araucania Toconao or similar Aran weight yarn, as well as DK, on a pair of 5mm / US8 needles. ¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨ The Inner Wild Ancestors Apron is my little homage to my ancestors; the hardy, strong, self-sufficient women of the Western Isles of Scotland (next stop America). The Ancestors Apron is heavily textured; hand knitted in a traditional knot-work pattern reminiscent of family roots and wild grasses woven by the wind. You can wear the Inner Wild Ancestors Apron all kinds of ways. When I put it on to take the photographs, I realised it is also very kilt-like somehow, I love that. This is a wonderful top layer garment for those who, like me, love the layered-look. Or to make a simple statement against a solid neutral or colour block or even pattern. ¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨ About your Inner Wild pattern: All Inner Wild knitting patterns are designed to be precise yet creatively flexible so you can easily adapt them to your own individual style. As an indie knitwear designer I’m free to choose any yarn and any needle size. I encourage you to also play with your favourite yarns and needle sizes and enjoy a sense of creative freedom. That’s why I don’t include prescriptive tension / gauge in my patterns. On each Inner Wild knitting pattern I share the original yarn and needle size used in the accompanying Inner Wild knitwear photograph. These yarns include, for example, Debbie Bliss, Rowan, Araucania, Louisa Harding, Sirdar, Twilleys, Schachenmayr, Wendy and Patons. Naturally, you’re free to substitute alternative yarns; perhaps something from your existing stash or a beautiful yarn that’s suddenly on sale. Experimenting with different yarns is always fun. You can google “substitution for {name of yarn}” to find alternatives to my originals. This is also very handy for those who might be sensitive to particular wools or synthetic yarns - and helps to use up our existing yarn stash. In cases when in the future you discover a particular yarn has been discontinued you can use the “saved search” facility on ebay to be notified when someone is selling that discontinued yarn. Or you may be able to buy a discontinued yarn from another knitter’s stash on Ravelry. Visit www.innerwild.com ¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨¨¨¨°º*∫∫∫*º°¨¨¨

The Dogs of Sanctuary House tells the true stories of homeless dogs who have come to live at Sanctuary House on the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Many of the dogs were lost or no longer wanted at the end of hunting season, others were homeless for other reasons. Most of the dogs are beagles . . . but not all. Sanctuary House has also been home to golden retrievers, cocker spaniels, a rat terrier, a Chihuahua, a border collie, a mostly Pomeranian, and two American Eskimo dogs. This book of stories provides little windows into their lives. Sister Mary Winifred is the resident caretaker for the dogs and other animals at Sanctuary House, a part of Ascension Hermitage & Sanctuary, and where life is sometimes sad, most often joyous, and always chaotic! Sales of this book directly support the animals and the work of Ascension Hermitage & Sanctuary.

By Jackie Cooper This is an amazing, unique coloring and doodling book. The book is beautiful, the images artistic, flowing and a bit mysterious. With 61 captivating, very detailed illustrations to color with pens or colored pencils and another 32 simply detailed illustrations waiting for you to complete with your own doodling designs.1. 124 pages to color on 62 pages with illustrations printed front and back of each page. Printed on heavy weight paper, bright white paper that has most of the backgrounds colored.2. 61 amazing, artistic Illustrations to color, with the backgrounds already colored.3. 32 Illustrations simply detailed for you to complete with your own doodling.4. Gel pens and colored pencils work well with this book, I tested Fiskars Gel Pens and Irma Gel Pens and neither leaked through the pages.5. I tested markers and Bic Mark-it, Sharpie, and Pentel, leaked through the page enough to ruin the picture on the backside of the page I tested. Staedtler Fine liners leaker through the least with only a couple dots of black actually going through the page so I am going to color a picture with these. The Staedtler Fibre tips some colors did leak through especially the very dark colors blue, green, black and other colors did not leak through at all.6. This is a beautiful book, the cover is thick heavy weight cardboard, the book is 11 ¾ inches by 8 ¼ inches and it is ¾ of an inch thick.7. The background colors make this book special, some are solid, some are not solid giving the background a rustic look, some are made up of multiple colors, a couple have lines in the back ground color my least favorite.8. The coloring pages are very detailed, the doodling pages simply detailed so you can add your own doodles and create your own unique illustrations .UPDATE;After looking at the pictures shown in the open book which are the first pages in the book I realized that there are no pictures of the doodling pages for you see examples and with so many pictures in the book I decided to add some of my favorite coloring pages for you to see. The last four are from the doodling section of the book.Cons:1. Two of the pictures had a few spots in the background color that look like drops of the ink landed on the page.

I love the hard cover and the really strong paper it's made out of. When I was reading reviews before there were a couple that talked about how the pages were already colored in and that made me nervous but that's actually deceiving. The part that you color is not colored in already by another customer, it's just background and outlining. Personally I don't mind it but others might not like that feature. I've added a few photos just to show that some of the backgrounds are already colored and some are not. The third photo is just showing all of the pages as you would see it on the side.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Perfect By Jessica R. I can't stress enough how much I love this coloring book. I have purchased quite a few coloring books to help de-stress at the end of long days and have found myself even more frustrated and stressed from the intricacies of those books. This one provides just enough fun intricate designs without being overwhelming. There's many with repetitive designs/patterns and plenty unique images. I tend to put on music and zone out to coloring. An hour or so seems to be long enough to clear my mind. I noticed that quite a few pages do have colored backgrounds or some coloring already done but this doesn't bother me since I rarely have a color scheme in mind when I first start. I do understand why this could be frustrating to others, though. The hardback is perfect for flat surfaces so you're not fighting to keep pages open while you color. I used both bullet point animation markers and Crayola markers to color and have not experienced any bleed-throughs at all. I would recommend this and the others by Hannah Davies.

After three long years of scrimping and saving to buy tickets for their passage to America, Roald and Ingeborg Bjorklund, along with their son, Thorliff, finally arrive at the docks of New York City. It was the promise of free land that fed their dream and lured them from their beloved home high above the fjords of Norway in 1880. As they join the throngs of countless immigrants passing through Castle Garden, the Bjorklunds soon discover that nothing is as they had envisioned it. Appalled by the horrid stories of fellow immigrants forced to live in squalid living conditions, they continue their long journey by train as far as Grand Forks. From there a covered wagon takes them into Dakota Territory, where they settle on the banks of the Red River. But there was no way for them to foresee the price they will have to pay to wrest a living from the indomitable land. The virgin prairie refuses to yield its treasure without a struggle. Will they be strong enough to overcome the hardships of that first winter?

Fabulous Christian frontier literature By Annetta Doggett The grueling life of this Norwegian pioneer family made me so thankful for all the blessings in my modern life. They had so few material possessions, worked so hard, endured such hardships, but yet maintained their faith in God, the most important possession anyone can have. I've read all of the books of this series, but this one stands out above them all.

52 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Historically Realistic By A Customer This book was almost too real. The Christian characters were far from perfect and very believeable. It offered true insight into the hardships of settling a new land in the 1800's, much more than Little House on the Prairie, in that you could see and feel the struggle and sacrifices in their life. It was riveting and I can't wait to read the next one.

44 of 47 people found the following review helpful. Very Enjoyable By Connie Ansell "An Untamed Land" was VERY enjoyable. It was exactly the way it was. I am sure because of the stories I've heard from my mother and her many relatives who grew up as Norwegian North Dakota farmers. Uff-da, the characters even speak Norwegian occasionally. Anyone from this heritage will get tears in their eyes and a lot of joy.

The History of Henry Esmond, by William Makepeace Thackeray

About the Author William Makepeace Thackeray was a nineteenth century English novelist who was most famous for his classic novel, Vanity Fair, a satirical portrait of English society. With an early career as a satirist and parodist, Thackeray shared a fondness for roguish characters that is evident in his early works such as Vanity Fair, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, and Catherine, and was ranked second only to Charles Dickens during the height of his career. In his later work, Thackeray transitioned from the satirical tone for which he was known to a more traditional Victorian narrative, the most notable of which is The History of Henry Esmond. Thackeray died in 1863.

A Masterpiece By David Snyder Although for some reason forgotten by the US public, "The History of Henry Esmond" is one of the finest books ever written in English language. May be it has lost its luster because it offers no excess of blood-spilling and sexual adventures, but instead finds its way to describe the deepest and most vulnerable chambers of the human heart. I have read a handful of books, be it in English, French, German or Russian, that described the human strengths and weaknesses while tying them to a character one can relate to with such skill. People who do not like it, it seems, are just shamed by the morals offered in such a book, and are quick to forget it. I read "Henry Esmond" when I was a young boy, and now, half a century later, it hasn't lost a beat.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Esmond By A Customer In the minds of some, justifiably the finest novel in the English language. The neglect this novel has suffered is appalling. Requirement: a mind for detail, a sympathy for history, an artistic sensibility. Read it at least twice. Only one reader in a thousand will remember the button reference on the last line. A pity that this book should be out-of-print. Pater thought it a perfect work of fiction. Trollope thought it was unsurpassed.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. All the good ones seem to be out of print By Maggie The History of Henry Esmond begins with the sweet Lady Castlewood stumbling upon the lonely abandoned Henry as she tours her new home. Her husband has inherited the estate and his illegitimate 11-year old cousin Henry, is fearful of the reception he will receive from the new owners. Will they throw him out? Treat him like a servant? When they instead embrace him into their family (which includes their daughter Beatrix and son Frank) he is overjoyed. What he slowly begins to realize (as he first becomes their almost-son, and later the de facto head of the household) is that this blessing is more complex than it first appears.Throughout the book, Henry longs for a family, and although he is a part of the Castlewood's, he is also always an outsider. They come to rely on him because they know he will sacrifice more for them then any real son or brother ever would. With every page, the Castlewood family becomes increasingly complex - some relationships are strengthened and some are slowly destroyed in such subtle ways that when a catastrophe comes, it seems inevitable, and at the same time, surprising. True motives are hidden and twisted and everybody longs for a kind of love not given. Through it all, we have Henry's narration (although he speaks of himself in the third person), which casts a lonely and reflective tone over all the events. A beautiful book.

FOR BETTER OR CURSE. That might as well have been the wedding vow of Elle Chance and her new husband, the ex-Warlock Hugh Marsh. For the couple has scarcely returned from their honeymoon when the ancient battle between Light and Shadow tears them apart. As Elle devotes herself to her duties as the Oracle—who alone has the power to keep the dark designs of Shadow at bay—Marsh finds himself missing the excitement of his former life as a Warlock. So when Commissioner Willoughby of the London Metropolitan Police seeks his help in solving a magical mystery, Marsh is only too happy to oblige. But in doing so, Marsh loses his heart, literally. In place of the flesh-and-blood organ is a clockwork device—a device that makes Marsh a kind of zombie. Nor is he the only one. A plague of clockwork zombies is afflicting London, sowing panic and whispers of revolution. Now Elle must join forces with her husband’s former flame to track down Marsh’s heart and restore it to his chest before time runs out.

About the Author Liesel Schwarz, a lifelong fan of nineteenth-century Gothic literature, is a hopeless romantic who loves Victorians, steampunk, fairies, fantasy monsters, the fin de siècle, and knowing the correct way to drink absinthe. She also likes medieval things, pirates, zombies, space operas, and all subjects in between.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Not all fairy tales end with Happy Ever After. Some begin that way. The girl who casts no shadow has become a wife. The world once again has an Oracle and the realms of Light and Shadow are in harmony. The pact between Alchemist and Nightwalker is no more. It has crumbled to dust and rests in the ruins of Constantinople. And a bargain has been struck. Those of the Council who would harm the girl have agreed to let her be for now. But these are all matters that some say do not fall to the attentions of La Fée Verte. For the universe is vast and I am small. For what can one do but have regard for that tiny part of it which concerns one? I have gained my freedom, but I sometimes find myself missing Paris and the absinthe-green dreams I used to weave in return for sugar. They have given me my own quarters in the glasshouse that leads off the breakfast room, and I have filled it with green. Angelica and anise blossom in large clay pots amongst the ferns and fancy moth orchids that were brought from far away. But beneath the wooden cladding and frames that allow me to pass unhindered, the glasshouse is still made of iron. And were it not for the stray bumblebees I invite in to stay with me, I would be completely alone in this vast gray city of smog and drizzle. It is a place I have grown to despise, despite my good fortune. I digress. The sunrise is about to call upon the day and there is work to do. For such is the nature of the two realms that make up this world: as happiness and contentment grows in the Light, so from deep within the Shadow, the dark counterparts grow too. Sometimes in the quiet hours of the day I sense it, and I grow very afraid. My mistress is too immersed within her perfect happiness to sense what will come to pass and I do not have the heart to tell her. Yet. Better to let her enjoy her newfound happiness a little longer. She will need thoughts of this happiness to sustain her. Because when the darkness comes, it will take everything. Chapter 1 Amsterdam, 5 February 1904 The Water Lily creaked happily as she surged against the headwinds that heralded landfall. As she prepared for landing, Elle eased the airship to a lower altitude. Below her, the canals and gingerbread buildings of the city came into view. Amsterdam was as pretty as a picture, but there was no time for sightseeing. Today was a day for business. The Greychester Flying Company was about to collect its first proper freight consignment. Strictly aboveboard and legitimate. Elle smiled with pride. Her very own charter flight business. It was almost as if an invisible hand had granted every wish she had ever had in one magical sweep. She had so many ideas about what she wanted to do with her new venture that she could hardly sleep at night. She ran her gaze around the wood and glass interior of the cockpit. The repairs and improvements that had been made to the Water Lily were superb. Marsh had insisted on installing brand-new navigational instruments and a state-of-the-art balloon-gas relay system. She had protested, but he had been adamant. She was secretly thrilled though. In fact, one would never have thought the Water Lily had been riddled with bullet holes and dangerously close to being scrapped just months before. Bought with his money, not yours . . .  the voices whispered to her. “Oh, do be quiet you old crones!” Elle spoke out loud. The voices who spoke were the Spirit of the Oracle. An amalgamation of fragments from the souls from each woman who had, over the centuries, held the position. Elle knew that when she died, a little part of her would rise up to join them too. And as much as she hated the fact that they were always watching her, it gave her comfort to know that somewhere within that patchwork of souls that made up the nebula she came to know as the voice of the Oracle, was a bit of the mother she never knew. It was just a pity that they were such a bunch of busybodies who always chose to interfere at the most inopportune times. Never forget who you are, child, the voices said in answer to her thoughts. “Yes, yes, I am the Oracle, the source of wisdom; the one with the gift of sight; the force that holds the many folds of the universe together; the one who channels power to those who are deserving,” she recited the mantra they had taught her in a bored singsong voice. “Trust me, if there is one thing I cannot do, it’s forget who I am. Now please leave me alone to enjoy this moment, would you? Today I am flying and I want none of this Oracle business spoiling it.” As you wish . . .  the voices faded away. Just then, the communications consul started rattling and spitting out a ribbon of tape, clearing her for landing. Elle brought the airship round portside and lined her up, ready to dock at one of the platforms that lined the docks on the western district. With a shudder and hiss that sounded almost like a sigh of contentment, the Water Lily berthed. “There you go, my dear,” Elle said to her ship as she turned the crank handle that released the tether ropes. “All safe and sound.” Almost as if in answer to that, one of the boiler tank pressure release valves opened to release some engine pressure. Elle opened the hatch and let the ladder rope drop to the ground. With practiced ease, she climbed down and stepped onto the wooden docking platform. “Miss Chance, I presume!” A tall man with a shock of white-blond hair that was thinning at the top waved at her. “Ah, Mr. De Beer.” She smiled at him. “Welcome to the fair city of Amsterdam.” He spoke in an accent that was a touch heavy and rounded on the vowels. “Thank you. It’s so nice to finally meet you,” she said as she shook her new Dutch docking agent’s huge hand vigorously. “And the same to you,” he said graciously. “It is an honor to be working with the famous Eleanor Chance.” Elle didn’t have the heart to correct him on her new surname. Simply being Elle Chance for the day, not Lady Eleanor or Viscountess Greychester, was a bit of a relief, if she was honest with herself. She loved her husband, Hugh, with all her heart, but the pomp and ceremony involved in becoming part of his world over the last few months had been more than a little overwhelming. “I have the papers ready here to sign, if you will. Once it is completed, I will tell the men to start loading the freight. I have told them to be extra careful with our precious tulips.” Mr. De Beer pointed to the crates of bulbs that were stacked on wooden pallets and tied down with coarse rope. They were indeed ready to be loaded into the hull and destined to brighten the gardens and huge glasshouses of Kew this summer. “My men shouldn’t take too long. Sign here, if you please,” he said as he handed her a wad of papers. Elle felt a pang of sadness when she signed the docking papers and charter before handing them back to Mr. De Beer so he could tear off the counterparts. Patrice, her old agent, had been such fun. In the old days, before Constantinople, Patrice would have taken her to some exotic disreputable bar or café for a drink while they waited for the freight to be loaded. He would have had her in fits of giggles with his lumbering charm and silly jokes. Despite his betrayal and all the terrible things he did, Elle found herself missing his massive moustache. She had been told afterward that very few bodies were ever recovered from the Constantinople earthquake that had killed almost every living alchemist and a large percentage of the Nightwalker population. They had all been gathered in an underground amphitheater when the vortex their leader, Sir Eustace Abercrombie, had created collapsed, bringing a large part of the city down with it. The last memory Elle had of Patrice was of him hanging on for dear life at the edge of a spinning vortex of complete darkness . . .  She closed her eyes at the awful memory. Patrice had simply been sucked into oblivion, never to be seen again. She did not think that a funeral had been held for him and the thought of it made her sad. Such a wasteful and futile quest for absolute power . . .  “Miss Chance, is everything all right?” Mr. De Beer asked. He looked concerned. Elle blinked herself back to the present. “Yes, all is well. I was just remembering something. Silly really.” She shrugged off her dark thoughts. Patrice had betrayed her, and he had betrayed her husband too, by working as a double agent. Even if he were alive today, she did not think she could forgive the fact that he had sold her to the alchemists as if she were nothing more than a means to gain a profit. But this was the beginning of a new era and she wouldn’t allow dark thoughts to taint things. “Say, do you know where the pilots’ mess is?” she asked De Beer. “Ah, yes, it’s just over there. Upstairs in that building with the green roof.” “Thank you.” She smiled at De Beer. “Take off in three hours?” He doffed his flat cap. “Will see you then, Miss Chance.” The pilots’ mess room was exactly where Mr. De Beer had said it was, on the first floor of one of the administrative buildings adjacent to the landing docks. The smell of meat stew mingled with the odor of tired bodies hit her right in the nostrils halfway up the stairwell. It was a familiar smell that made her feel warm inside. It was the smell of freedom. The mess was really nothing more than a large, slightly grubby warehouse that had been converted to serve as a canteen and waiting area for pilots and crew between flights. The wooden floorboards were scuffed and gray paint flaked from the walls, in the way that utilitarian buildings seemed to do, but this did not seem to bother anyone. She walked up to the canteen counter and ordered a coffee. It came in a tin mug and had a faint blue-gray film on the surface that hinted at the hours it had been brewing behind the counter. She had just picked up her coffee when someone called her name. “Ellie!” Only her father and one other person called her that. She spun round to greet the young man who was, at that moment, bounding up to her like an overeager Labrador. “Ducky!” She hugged him with genuine affection. “Or should I rather bow and say, good afternoon, my lady?” In one quick move, he converted her hug into a half nelson that would have made any wrestler proud. Elle started laughing and dug her fingers into his ribs to tickle him. This was a practiced maneuver she had perfected while they were in flight school. Richard “Ducky” Richardson was the brother she never had. Ducky, so called because of his prowess on the cricket field, let go of her. “My word, it’s good to see you. What on earth are you doing here?” “I’m flying.” She smoothed her hair back into its customary low knot at the back of her neck. “Is that old tub of yours still in the air?” he said with amazement. “The Water Lily is not a tub. And she’s just had a complete overhaul. I’d bet she’d outrun your manky old ship any day of the week.” “Ha! Now that’s a wager I’d like to take.” “Just name the day and I’ll be there.” Ducky grinned at her. “Oh, Ellie. It’s so lovely to see you. I’m so sorry I missed the wedding, but I was in Japan and I couldn’t get back in time. You did get married awfully quickly,” he said with naughty smile. “I would have thought you would be busy planning christening breakfasts at the moment.” There had been more than a few finely arched eyebrows raised at news of her sudden marriage to Marsh and the gossipmongers were all watching eagerly to see if their suspicions were correct. “Oh stop it!” Elle felt her cheeks grow warm. “When you know something is right, there really is no reason to wait. And besides, you know I’m not the type of girl who fancies elaborate weddings.” “Come, let me introduce you to the crew,” Ducky said. On the other side of the canteen, a group of men had halted their game of cards and were watching her intently as Ducky steered her over to them. “Lads, I’d like to you meet my very dear friend Mrs. Eleanor Marsh, or rather, Viscountess Greychester to be precise,” Ducky said. “Elle, may I present the crew of the Iron Phoenix.” He made an overelaborate sweeping gesture. Chairs scraped as the crewmen all rose to their feet, nodded awkwardly and mumbled “my lady,” in gruff tones. All except one. He was dressed like her, in a white shirt and brown leather coat. “Gentlemen, do sit. Today I am simply Elle, the pilot. There really is no need for formalities, please.” “By all means, join us.” The man who was still seated spoke with a soft drawl that immediately placed him from somewhere in the New World, America perhaps, she wasn’t sure. She studied the men. Ducky was the embodiment of a clean-cut Englishman. Apple-cheeked, bred from solid stock and good to his bones, his only flaw was his natural sense of adventure. Despite his family’s best efforts, he absolutely refused to settle down. It was also one of the things she loved best about him. Sandy was the word that first came to mind when her gaze slid to the American. He had the gravelly, freckly look of a man who had spent the majority of his life outdoors. He wore a fedora pushed back on his head, which he had not bothered to take off indoors. She stared at his hands as they rested on the table. Broad palms, strong fingers. The hands of a man who knew hard work. A soldier’s hands, she decided. He was far too suspicious-looking to be a farmer. He gave her a quizzical look. “Well, are you going to sit down or not?” he asked. E

By Claudia This is the second book in this steam punk series and I could not wait to find out where the story would take Elle and Hugh next. They are now married and the happily ever after has gotten a little bit problematic. This book is set up in and around London, so expect to read more about this city and less about traveling to exotic locations. Elle is still working as a pilot, and the next time she comes back from a flight, she discovers that Hugh has disappeared. This book is mostly about Elle, and her discovery of her own powers as the oracle, and her fight to get Hugh back and save London from the evil White Lady who is building an army of men with mechanical hearts. By her side are some new friends, and some old friends. I enjoyed very much that we read more about the professor, the housekeeper, and Elle's night walker friend. Great characters and great new adventures. I did miss Hugh though, and his and Elle's little quarrels and discussions, where the sparks were always flying, but I am sure we will see more of that in the next book. I also enjoyed that the author did not get into too much detail about the machines this time, but focused more on the story and the characters. All in all, a really good book. I can't wait for the next one!Copy provided through Netgally.

We see Elle and Marsh living "happily" ever after but then disaster is always on the horizon. Marsh is missing and then missing his heart, replaced with a ticking clock. Only Elle can find a way to save him. I think Ms. Schwarz did a wonderful job of creating a new zombie-like character; one we've never seen before. We get to ride along Elle as she discovers more about herself and her powers while trying to save the man she loves. She remains loyal to her husband while still trying to maintain her independence. That independence is the only thing that is going to save Marsh. I loved this book! I thought it moved along quickly, introducing us to new characters as well as some old ones. I think it was an excellent follow up to A Conspiracy of Alchemists and can't wait to see what happens in the 3rd installment. Ms. Schwarz did an excellent job of keeping her audience involved and leaves them wanting more!

This is the second book in the Chronicles of Light and Shadow. The third book will be titled, Sky Pirates, and is due out in June of 2014. I absolutely adore this series. I loved the first book in this series and this book was even better. Elle is fantastic fun to read about and the steampunk elements in the story are really well done.Elle and Marsh are having some trouble with their marriage. Elle loves Marsh but wants to be free to pilot her plane wherever she wants, she is also chafing at being forced to perform the duties of the Oracle. Marsh has given up his Warlock powers to be with Elle, but finds himself bored by her constant absences. While Elle takes a charter to Singapore, Marsh decides to help Commissioner Willoughby solve a strange mystery of missing people and tick-tock men. When Elle returns to find Marsh missing she doesn't know if it is a change of heart on his part or if something more sinister is going on.I really enjoy these books a lot. They are wonderful steampunk reads with a paranormal element to them. They are incredibly engaging and well written and the main heroine is a lot of fun to read about.Elle is spunky and fun and is struggling with something a lot of women struggle with when they get married. She wants to be her own woman and not lose herself in marriage, yet she desperately loves her husband and is struggling to balance the two. As in the last book she is hilarious, very resourceful and lots of fun to read about.Nightwalker Loisa Beladodia was the other driving character in this book. She joins forces with Elle in the search for Marsh and is another incredibly fun character. She is petite and beautiful and absolutely vicious. She also is very witty and has a great sense of humor. There are some new additions to the story. The evil White Lady is delightfully frightful. Old Jack, whom Elle meets in the Shadowlands, is absolutely intriguing. The plot is well done and has a very historical investigative urban fantasy feel to it. There are tons of steampunk elements in the story and I absolutely loved that. A number of fantastical steampunk devices are well explained and they are incredibly creative. Schwarz has done her homework and she really does steampunk excellently. There isn't a ton of romance in this book; it is mostly action, investigation, and mystery. I really found the story engaging and hard to put down and was absolutely on the edge of my seat trying to guess how things would turn out. The book ends very harshly and will probably upset some readers, but I enjoyed the ending and am curious as to how things will play out in future books.Overall I absolutely loved this book. I love the characters; they are fun and entertaining. I love the world and the plot as well. In this book we are introduced to numerous fascinating steampunk devices, the Shadowlands, and a number of delightfully shady new characters.Highly recommended to steampunk and urban fantasy fans out there. There isn't a ton of romance here but the world, characters, and steampunk elements are incredibly well done. I would recommend to those who enjoy The Parasol Protectorate by Gail Carriger, The Clockwork Century series by Cherie Priest, or the Swinburne and Burton series by Mark Hodder.
