By Richard Moore I'm so happy to see some of the great works of Anna Katherine Green; she has become one of my favorite writers, after I ran out of Christie's books to read. I found out that Agatha Christie, got into writing after reading Greens' books, who was a bestselling author who publishing about 40 books. I read she was first poet and later became a novelist to get attention to her poetry, however, she was so successful at mystery plotting, (she was an expert at the gradual unfolding of the mystery through the successful unearthing of clue after clue), that she dove right into mystery writing only. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing legally accurate stories, something like Law and Order in the way that the stories are accurate and sometimes based on actual cases. Her many fans besides me, include such literary luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Agatha Christie. In fact, not just Christie, but Rinehart wrote that it was the novels of Anna Katharine Green which first inspired her to become writers of mystery fiction to.In this classic mystery story featuring the first woman detective, Katherine Anna Green's legendary character Violet Strange has been hailed as the first fictional female detective series. If you love classic mysteries in the Agatha Christie vein, you will love the Violet Strange stories. Violet was a young woman from a wealthy family, who was gifted with remarkable detective skills. When her father disowned her sister for choosing a musical career, Violet set out to earn enough money to launch her sister's career and to support them both. But she knew the decision would estrange her from the man she loved. Soon she was facing a baffling mystery in The Golden Slipper, and don't worry, there are more Violet Strange stories here! You'll love them all as I did!

Don't look down on the fashionable, fairy-like figure of Violet Strange, the New York debutant rushing heedlessly from tea to musicale to ball. And don't be to quick to find the first few society puzzles she solves mere bagatelles of detection. As case follows upon case, they grow increasingly dark and devastating to the participants - and to Violet.Violet, too, is a mystery. Why should an elegant little rich girl be so greedy for money? She earns large sums as an undercover agent for a private investigator - and always wants more. What secret is driving her to an employment that she finds distasteful - and that would infuriate her father if he knew of it?There are nine stories - and both singly and together they demonstrate Anna Katharine Green's great talent for weaving a complex plot. They often deal with emotionally charged matters - for example, finding a will worth millions that's been lost by a sleepwalker, or penetrating the horrid secrets of a room that's been walled off for generations. Eventually Violet will elucidate her own mystery. And there's a love interest for Violet besides - to add to the delights of this book. The Golden Slipper was published in 1915, but the writing style has the charm and cadence of Victorian fiction. The plots are subtly enriched by Gothic motifs and Shakespearean elements - yet come across as realistic and believable.Anna Katharine Green was herself a small, shy woman with traditional views and terrific earning power - much like young Violet Strange. Miss Strange may well be the most intimately revealing of Green's many fascinating detectives, male or female. She approaches her cases with a spontaneous, self-effacing intelligence that feels very real.Green is credited with inventing the idea of the detective series. This book is remarkable for being a series in miniature, containing mysteries within a mystery - a truly sophisticated and original fictional performance.Anna Katharine Green influenced Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Some of her books are less polished than others, but for me The Golden Slipper ranks among her best work. Other favorites of mine are The Leavenworth Case, The Circular Staircase, and That Affair Next Door - all full-length novels of detection.

Equals "The Mysterious Mr. Quin" By ATB / Molly Black A long time lover and reader of late 19th and early 20th century mystery writers, I came across this collection and fell immediately in love.Though not detective stories in the strict sense, this collection follows an unusual detective as she uses her skills for unusual mystery solving.Well written, finely crafted, and very easy to read, I can not recommend this collection highly enough. For me this collection and this writer has become another comfort reading series, much as Agatha Christie and Terry Pratchett have. Don't let the age of the stories deceive you - or the unknown status of the author today. You may just end up falling in love as I did.
