Roberts First Sentence: “I don’t believe it!” Arlette Ross McKintyre’s eyes flashed fire as she looked up at the Presidential box.”Captain Matthew Grand happened to be attending the play at Ford’s Theater when Lincoln is shot. He attempted to apprehend Booth, but failed and is sent to London undercover to track down one of the co-conspirators. Jim Batchelor has been investigating a series of garrottings by the Haymarket Strangler but is hired to do an article on Grand and the assassination. The unlikely pair team up when there are signs the two cases may be related.The story begins with an opening which starts out light but quickly turns much darker and tragic. What is interesting is that one never thinks of Lincoln’s assassination from the perspective of a bystander, yet Trow does an excellent job of making you feel as though you were there.The characters are fully drawn. Grand’s fiancée is catty, ambitious and highly annoying; yet her butler is delightful. Grand has the confidence of a former military captain, yet you feel his overwhelm in coming to London. Batchelor is canny and a survivor who believes in what he does.Trow provides fascinating references to historical characters and events, most of which may have been previously unknown to readers, yet their inclusion adds extra dimension to the story. For all the grimness of the situations, Trow’s voice and touches humor, of situations and the dialogue.“The Blue and the Gray” is a very good read introducing two wonderful characters. If you are a Lincoln fan, this book willdoubt appeal to you. In general, as a Victorian fiction novel, this is one of the best that This I have had the pleasure of reading.The characters are interesting and have the kind of depth that allows you entry into the world of the story so you feel as if you are part of it. The language is appropriate for the chosen time period and setting and the author was careful not to reveal too much too soon.I liked the way this story unfolded. I was never sure if things were going to go as I expected or take a different course. The pages turned quickly and I was sorry to reach the end, but happy with the way the author chose to end this story.Overall, I thought this was an excellent book and would definitely recommend it to other readers.This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Not a true favorite because it seemed to have trouble deciding if it wanted to be similar to a light comedy or a slasher horror story. I definitely kept reading because I wanted to see how the author tied together the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in America with garroting of prostitutes in London. It reads like two books for the longest time because so much material needed to be explained about Captain Matthew Grand (present at the performance at Ford's Theatre the night Lincoln was shot) and how he was forced to travel to England in pursuit of an accessory in the plot to kill Lincoln. The second story involves one James Batchelor who turns down the favors of a prostitute and is later found in a dark alley covered in her blood. As a fledgling reporter James wants to get the story and immediately makes friends with the Scotland Yard Inspector. Managing to bring the two men together worked okay, just relying on a whole heaping lot of coincidences.What I did like about this book was how well author M. J. Trow kept his dynamic secrets until he was ready to reveal them. In other words, I didn't guess who the killer of the prostitutes was. This is the first book in a series to feature these two very different yet oddly appealing young crime solvers.I received an ARC of this novel through NetGalley.

It challenges us all to take a hard look and talk to our communities about what we eat and how it gets to our table. Whether you grow your own veggies in your back yard, are on the board of a local community garden or CSA, or run a farm, this book can help you engage your community. Ali offers something at every level for people to get involved. The great thing about this book is that there is always another option to add to what you are already doing, and you can tailor it to your community. As somewhat of an activist myself, the "You Can Do This" sections are my favorite.

I guess it says something about my personal creativity if I'd never thought about turning the Black Plague into a zombie-fic. I love this story line, I love the characters, I love the depth and details and just about everything about it! Each character has their own unique and well developed personality and each one is distinct from the others. The zombies are consistent in their physical and logistical threats to Edward and his mismatched team of Knights. The scenery is well displayed without info dumping or leaving it so skeletal it turns into a thing of a challenge to the reader's imagination. The pacing is well done, not too fast, not too slow, but things speed up or slow down as necessary, and there aren't any awkward "Maybe this is a displaced scene?" feelings.If you like historical fiction (with enough accuracy to ring of truth) and zombies, please, for the love of all that is holy, read this. You will not be disappointed!I changed my review to 5 stars because reading episode 1-5 made me excited all over again about this story, and everything has remained consistent-- Consistently AWESOME!

Knights and Zombies in Days of Gore By Kimball Dawes Zombies are pretty popular right now, and this serial has a unique setting to the genre: the Middle Ages and plague-ridden England. I haven't read any zombie-lit before, but I was intrigued by this chivalrous mix of dead folks who aren't really dead and knights who are not anxious to join them. I have used the word 'zombie'; however, Mr. Calas does not use it. After all, these are just plague victims on a new diet plan.Basically, Sir Edward wants to reunite with his wife in Northern England, so he talks fellow knights, Sir Tristan and Sir Morgan, into helping him slash, gash, and viciously trash any plague "afflicted" who get in their way or just stumble into their path. Besides zombie-types, Sir Edward and his companions encounter other knights with agendas not coinciding with the trio's own, an invading French army, and an entrepreneur with the beyond disgusting audacity to use zombie women as prostitutes. The results of such unthinkable congress are disastrous!Mr. Calas has given us, in installments, a raunchy, blood-splattered tale seasoned with expletives as well as other bodily fluids. He has also done his research well, sandwiching in historical notes between each chapter. They add authenticity to this nausea-inducing story. Yeah, I know. Nobody made me read it, and since there's at least one more installment left, I will finish it because I just have to know: Does Sir Edward ever get to his wife? Will it be the homecoming he longs for?If this is your kind of reading, it should satisfy that undead appetite of yours!

Sawyer I've never read a serial before and thought I'd take the plunge with something fun. I'm a historical lit fan and a horror lit fan so this seemed like a good combination. This installment delivers on both but what grabbed me most was the hurtling pace from one peril to the next, with a horrifying "oh-no-how-will-they-get-out-of-this-alive" cliffhanger ending. All lightly balanced with laugh-out-loud wisecracks and musketeeresque comedy capers along the way! You know what else? This hero loves his wife - go figure!!! This is much much better than all those Queen Victoria as a demon hunter or P&P with zombies stuff. Can't wait for installment two!

Comprehensive book on tools By Denniger Bolton I don't know that you would download this book unless you were about to buy some power tools, which I am, so I did, get the book that is. It's pretty comprehensive book covering what to look for when buying a Power Screwdriver, Dremel or Saw. I liked that the author Samuel Murphy, covered not only what you need to know about the various tools, but also a bit on the three powerhouses in the tool industry, Black & Decker, Bosch and Craftsman. If the goal is to learn more about power tools, I'd say I have.

Craftsman tools may have been great for the diy'er 20-30 years ago. But they've long been surpassed by other brands. Plus the fact that Sears has never made their own products, they just put their name on other companies tools, i.e.: Bosch, Ryobi, Black & Decker. Better free info on the internet.

About the Author Wesley Banks was born in 1983 and grew up on the west coast of Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Civil Engineering. After spending over 7 years building movable bridges from Florida to Washington he decided to focus on his true passion: writing. Wesley recently moved from Florida to Oregon to get back to the great outdoors that he's love so much. He lives with my wife Lindsey, and his two dogs Linkin and Story. From the first page it drew me in and I wanted to know the "secret" behind the dogs. I liked the characters, but felt like you didn't really get to know them, it was more of a small glimpse into their lives.The story was slow moving and I didn't feel like it really delivered after it built up the dogs.I was also disappointed that the main characters sleep together when they haven't even had a real conversation!I did, however love the story of King and his sacrifice. I also loved the concept of Hope and the poems throughout.

I can honestly say that I hated to put this book down. There were times that I needed to go somewhere and I found myself reading the book on my phone at red lights. I won't disclose any spoilers in this review... Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. It left me in shock and in tears. I loved Katie's character. I liked that she was adventurous and spontanious. Kyle's stubborn ways annoyed me at first, but by the end of the book, he made me so happy. The details in the book painted such clear scenes, that I felt like I was watching a movie. I can't wait to see what other stories Wesley has in store for us. Please read this book at the first chance you get. It will not disappoint.

Book Review for Hope In Every Raindrop by Wesley Banks By Amazon Customer As a librarian, member of Florida Teens Read committee, blogger, and avid reader, it is not uncommon for someone to ask me to read their book. It’s an honor to be asked to read something someone has poured so much time and effort into and it is truthfully a little terrifying to know that they are then expecting to know what you thought of their work! As a writer myself, the last thing I would ever want to do is write a negative review, but I also don’t want to lie if asked my honest opinion about a book. So, when my friend contacted me to say her husband had written a book, I admit I was nervous to read it. “What if I don’t like it?” I thought.Thank God, and author Wesley Banks, that my fears were totally unfounded! Hope In Every Raindrop was far beyond anything I could have expected from a debut author. From the beginning of the book, I was wholly engaged by the characters. They were likable, yet flawed, and I loved the sense of mystery that came along with Kyle, King, and the dogs. There is almost a sense that something magical is going on between them. Kyle and the dogs and their unique relationship were definitely my favorite part of the book. I read this book in two sittings. I probably would’ve read it in one, but I, unfortunately, require this little thing called sleep.There are several scenes in the book that encompass rain. Maybe it’s just me, but I find rain to be very romantic. If it starts raining at home, I make my husband turn off the television so we can just listen to the rain fall. I realize that this may be a matter of personal preference, but I thought the use of rain added to the beauty and romanticism of the book.Very often, adult romance novels are very corny. And that’s okay. I have certainly read my share of “beach reads” – books that I read through in an afternoon and that don’t make me think too hard! They usually have a plot you can see coming from a mile away and are sometimes too graphic for my taste. Personally, there are some things I prefer not to see in print. However, I felt like Wesley Banks did a great job of writing an elegant love story. Not only did it leave plenty to the imagination, it was well-written, and even quoted good literature.The book is much more than a love story though. Readers will enjoy the beautiful imagery and the supporting characters, especially Doc. Doc is such a wise, caring, yet tough character. I was immediately enamored by Doc. Out of all the characters, he is the one I would want to sit on the porch with and have a cup of tea, one of those biscuits Katie loved so much, and a conversation.Overall, the word “hope” that is found in the title, is a theme woven throughout the book. Life can be messy. Just like the characters in the book faced various challenges, both in their present and their past, so do we. This book is a reminder that there is always hope, no matter what comes our way.Hope In Every Raindrop was an engaging, lovely, and masterfully-written book that I highly recommend. Congratulations, Wesley, on a job well-done. The instructions are clear and easy to follow; the diagrams and color photos add significantly to one's understanding. As a non-beginnger rag quilter and "regular" quilter I found this book very helpful. It is full of lots of tips and techniques that would have made my first experiences with rag quilting more enjoyable. I am glad that I have the book and know that it will also become my "go to book" for rag quilting!
