By Alli March There were so many things I loved about this book. First, it was an easy and quick read. When you're looking for ideas for organizing, especially when it comes to topics like decluttering, you don't really want to spend hours and hours reading. Rachel Kratz weaves a ton of information into a relative short amount of space.Not only was it an easy, quick read, but unlike many books on this topic, there was no repetition of ideas just to fill up space. I loved how each chapter had a clear purpose and the subsections made it super easy to jump to topics that I really wanted to know more about right away.This book is beautifully organized and the information is presented in such a way that the reader is not left feeling overwhelmed by the subject matter, but instead is left inspired to start making changes in their own home and life.On the flip side, I kind of wished it was a little bit longer as I thoroughly enjoyed the author's writing style and I hope that she writes more books like this in the future. I don't think there was really anything else she needed to add to this book, I just didn't want to put it down.Minimize the Mess certainly tops my list of must read Organizing Books. Anyone looking for real life, practical tips and suggestions for decluttering and organizing will get a lot out of this book.

By rhc6886 A quick,easy read that offers the motivation and concrete steps to de-clutter and simplify your home. The purging step may take me half a year but I've already started and it feels really good. Sometimes I need books like this to give me "permission" to let go of stuff. The author brings up really good points about too many toys overwhelming children. As a child development professional, I completely agree and advocate for a few, open-ended toys that are rotated every few weeks to keep them interesting.

It provided great starting points for decluttering your home and made the process not feel so overwhelming. I really liked that it was a short read. It did not take me much time, and I could easily review chapters when I wanted a refresher on the current room I was working on.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Good for the pictures but forget the "information." By Leigh W Cole I want to say I really looked forward to getting this book. Armor in the Pacific is my specialized area of expertise. I am a retired Marine who served in armor unit. The good news is the pictures are fantastic. A person who builds dioramas or models should get this book just for that. And I mean just for that because the bad news is the text is terrible. You will not be able to source this book or rely on it for information. The author cannot tell a late model M4A2 from a M4A3. He constantly refers to US Army units having M4A2's which is simply untrue. Only Marine Corps units had the diesel tanks. I think the reason also is that it is translated from French, and the translation is poor at best. Common military terms and acronyms all veterans will know and understand are completely slaughtered. Then, the author has this quirk about trying to be humorous or witty, I can't tell, but captions such as "The men stupidly put the treads on backwards" simply is not acceptable. Again, if you want a great picture book of US (only) units in action, Marines and Army, great. (There are no pictures of Commonwealth or Japanese tanks, unfortunately). It will serve a hobbyist well. But if you are looking for reliable information and want to source knowledge, forget it. This book is worthless in that regard.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Decent, But Could Have Been Better By John Anderson This is a decent modeling reference that could have been so much better. Many other references are soft cover, flimsy by nature, and filled with small photographs, making picking out details quite difficult.The large hardback format of this book, with large size photos provides a lot of clear historical detail that will enthrall most model builders of Sherman tanks. Thrown in are occasional, very nice color profiles of the vehicles in the photos. The book is laid out in a very nice chronological order by Pacific island campaign. One can see how various models of the Sherman tank were introduced into the Pacific campaign and how tank crews increased add-on armor protection as the war progressed and became more vicious. The truly sad part of this book is the written material, which should be embarrassing for the publisher. The photo descriptions must have been written in French (country of origin for the publisher) and then run through a computer translator, with absolutely no review by anyone who speaks clear and proper English. The result is some sort of pigeon English with incorrect or clumsy wording and with varying past and present tense. Why lay out a nice book, furnish it with terrific visual depictions and then skimp on decent English language editing?

To me as a Californian for a half Century, the mood, the style and the specific places/events (I never knew much about the California gambling ships or Duesenbergs) of Mort's LA in the 30's ring true. Chinatown may be the greatest neo-noir movie ever; and Raymond Chandler has to be one of the best "true noir" writers. ("From 30 feet she looked like a lot of class. From 10 feet...") Mort has now rekindled my appreciation of the genre - with tightly written great lines on every page.Let's hope that Terry Mort keeps writing about Riley Fitzhugh for a long while. ("Hollywood in 1934. Prohibition is finally over, but there is still plenty of crime for an ambitious young private eye...") Fitzhugh is among the more erudite private eyes, with an implicit appreciation of F. Scott Fitzgerald. (Mort's Hobey is, as it becomes apparent, modeled on F. Scott himself - and the last tycoon could well be working at the next movie lot.) From the lookalike girlfriends to Della and Perry, there are a good number of literary allusions that make the book work on a couple of levels - with humor and irony.The murder mystery itself is excellent - as it should be - but to me it was almost secondary to the characters and times of Hollywood in the 30's. Mort brings them to life in a most enjoyable read.

Gambling ships, I did not know such things existed, 1934 Hollywood, murders and Monet are just some of the ingredients served up in this delightful smorgasbord. There are references to both real and fictional people all throughout the book, my favorite being that of Perry and Della, that will claim your attention. “The Monet Murders” grabs you with the storyline and keeps you flipping pages as fast as possible. This is a book with very interesting themes regarding evil and the evil inside us. Mr. Mort has given us a very interesting character in Riley and he makes us care for him all throughout the book. Don’t start this book late at night because you are going to want to finish it before you go to bed. A high-octane suspenseful thriller. Hanging out at Hollywood and Vine By Tacitus The Monet Murders does have a few dead bodies to deal with, as well as an elaborate scam to forge and steal a privately owned Monet, but the real fun is in the send-up of Hollywood circa 1934, a time when Prohibition is over and the Production Code is not yet in force. Private detective Bruno Feldspar, whose real name is Riley Fitzhugh, is hired by director Manny Stairs to find his missing mistress who is a dead ringer for his deceased wife. Mort's hardboiled detective has a soft spot for the fast-talking dames and voluptuous gals who congregate poolside at the Garden of Allah Hotel, where screenwriters drool over bikini-clad starlets who ignore them because they know that the way to the top is via the casting couch or a producer who might think so much of a girl's attributes as to restore her virginity in a major motion picture. In spite of his clunky pseudonym, these ladies still find time for Bruno, however, who enjoys their favors and solves at least some of the crimes. F. Scott Fitzgerald, aka Hobey Baker, makes a nice cameo appearance, lamenting in his cups his glory days gone by. "Always expect a party," is his motto. It's not exactly a revelation that promiscuity rules the roost and ripe fruit is easy picking at Hollywood and Vine, what redeems and distinguishes the book is the clarity and wit of the presentation. The dialogue is often snappy and the best descriptions would have pleased Raymond Chandler. Hollywood rarely strives for art--"It's a business, not the Sistine Chapel," Manny tells Bruno--but Mort, on the other hand, writes with delightful flair and verve.

If you're like me and do NOT like to follow complicated pattern instructions this book is for you. You'll find yourself making sweater's, dresses, coats & hats all without being stifled by someone else's pattern.Depending on the size of yarn and hook you can make a dress in a weekend! I often wonder what the author, Judith Copeland is up to now a days. This book totally captured my imagination and has literally changed my life. Anyone who's ever tried to crochet or knit from a task master or impossible pattern knows the frustration and fear of never being able to get it right. Judith frees you up to create! Judith, I thank you!

I discovered it while examining the Crochet Guild of America's table at a workshop and it is simply brilliant! This woman's technique gives you the formula for the design of anything that your heart would desire to make; it puts the power in your own hands! (The fit is great too!) This technique is the next generation of crochet creativity.

Usually, one would think that a book that old would be out of date. This is not the usual book. It is a perfect example of what was old is new again. Before I had even finished reviewing the temporary digital version I had been provided by the publisher, I had gone back and ordered a paper version not only for myself but a second copy for my younger daughter who also loves to crochet. The original book is still around in the secondary market but the price is high and out of reach of many crocheters. By re-publishing this book, Dover has brought the price point down to a reasonable and doable amount for most of us.It really surprised me how modern and today these fashions felt. I was just beginning to learn to crochet around the time it was published. My crochet at that time was limited to edges on baby receiving blankets and to afghans. I didn't even realize that I could make my own fashions for years. I can only wish that I had purchased this when it was out originally but late is better than never.The fundamentals of the method of modular crochet are that the pieces are made in rectangles that you fit to your own body and to the style of the garment you wish to make. That way, everyone can have their own custom fit garment. The stitches used are chain, single crochet, half-double (one of my favorite stitches), and double crochet. For the most part, the stitches are made only into the back loop of the stitch - something that the author calls a ridge stitch. Back in the day, this stitch would have been revolutionary for me but today it is already a tried and true stitch in my arsenal.There are step-by-step illustrations and photographs for the basic garment. The photographs in the book are a combination of color and black and white. The ones specifically in the basic garment construction are black and white. This worked fine for this purpose as the contrast of the photo on the white page made it easier to see what was being done versus trying to decipher it through color.After the basic garment is made, there are a myriad of ways to modify and change the pattern to make different garments. Everything from pockets, to wide sleeves, to so many different necklines. There are simply pages and pages of variations to make. The finished garments in this area are in color which is perfect because color and texture are a huge part of what makes each variation work. In addition to many garments for women, there are also a couple for men, children, and even for baby.The author gives a great tutorial on how to design your own garments using this method. It was at this point that I stopped to order the two copies of the book. I already knew I was going to but after reading this chapter, I could not wait another minute to do so.Both of my daughters are taller than six feet and I have spent a lot of my life trying to find garments that fit them. Sweaters were never an option as I could not find arm lengths to fit them. My younger daughter will be able to make her own but I absolutely plan to make my elder daughter a sweater or two. I also have fit problems as my bust size makes me go up in sizes but then the sleeve lengths are too long. I will have a lot of fun making these retro modern looks for myself.The author gives a great tutorial on stitches and detailing. The information on tools and yarn is excellent though this is an area where it is slightly and understandably out of date. There is such an abundance of yarns available today! The author's comments were extensive for the time and still hold true for the yarns she discusses. There are just so many more options and I think that most crocheters will be able to extrapolate the information given to apply to what they want to use today.Tools have undergone an ergonomic transformation in the last few years. The old style hook is still available but there are many new ones that can be used. My favorites are the Tulip Etimo and the Clover Soft Touch. I use both as they have different shaped heads and both are available in a wide range of sizes.The author's comments on stitch detailing is still spot on and extremely useful. She also gives information about various other tools and how to use them.I think the book is fantastic and is something that every crocheter should consider adding to their library. It is a book and a method that works for the beginner as well as the advanced stitcher. I am advanced and my daughter is intermediate. My elder daughter is a beginner and if after she sees my book and a garment that I have made, she is interested in trying to stitch, I will certainly buy a copy of the book for her, too. I think it is a great book to buy for yourself and also a great book to give as a gift - especially to a younger crocheter who has probably never seen anything like it before.I received a copy of this book from the publisher, Dover Publications, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Past the 1/2 way point and the holiday that should not be mentioned before October. For that reason I'm making an early start on it. This book has what I was looking for, Make your Own Gift Wrapping. This is one of those things I've seen, received but never before attempted. Kitty Moore's instructions are clear, the materials list is complete and more importantly affordable. The first few attempts are coming together well and at this rate I'll have it down by the time I need to pack gifts for that holiday which shall remain nameless. The book also has other projects suitable for different occasions, make your own cards and envelopes, tags, wall art. If you can imagine it Kitty Moore is writing about it in this book.

It's a first person book told from several different perspectives, but primarily centers around the adventures of John and his Lycan partner, Sarah.John and Sarah are part of a secret, magical sect that fights monsters and keeps humanity safe.Fallen centers around an uprising in 1920's San Francisco, that John and Sarah have to get to the bottom of before the Fallen infest the city. Using John's magic and swords, along with Sarah's smarts and teeth, they have to go up against Vampire Lord Dimitre and his horde of followers.This was a short, but action packed novella, that kept you interested from start to finish.Can't wait for book two!

I can't believe John and Sarah easily made their way to my heart, their characters pretty much got me by hook, line and sinker. Now, now, you might say, this is yet again another Twilight wannabe story.. No, absolutely no. While it's true there are vampires and werewolves in the story, Ascendancy is Magic! One couldn't help but feel magically inclined to finish reading each chapter, to fall for John's antics, to go berserk with The Fallen, and end up captivated until the last page.Let me just say, this has got to be one of the absolutely magical & beautifully written paranormal story written by a man. The descriptive narration was the first thing that attracted me to the book. The nasty, creepy book cover added spice to my reading and soon, I found myself curled up on my bed and couldn't get away from my Kindle until I finished it.. or should I say, waited in anticipation for the second book. Bradford Bates needs to turn this book into a TV series. Yay!

Cracking First Read For A Series By Kay Smillie This is the first book I have read by Bradford Bates, and it will certainly not be the last.This kept my riveted attention from the first page. Different characters tell the story in their own chapters, which is unusual these days but very good at also giving an insight into the characters themselves.This book may be short, but the amount of detail and action that is bursting from the pages is astounding. Niggemann I do book reviews for the Woodstock Weavers Guild from Illinois. This was an excellent resource book for an intermediate weaver for color, design and weave. A knowledgeable beginner weaving can also benefit from this excellent book. It has lots of eye candy to inspire every fiber artist.
