But there are indeed love triangles, were-beasts, and vampires if you are into that stuff. This is another superbly written, action-packed page-turner of a story that kept me emotionally involved with the main characters and wishing it would never end. I like smart adult fantasy I can lose myself in and this book fit the bill.If you haven't read the first two books in this series, and pretty much everything else by Mr. Grimwood, you're missing out.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A dash of Romeo & Juliet sprinkled in for good measure By H. Slusanschi The trilogy wraps up nicely, and opens up interesting opportunities for sequels. It's a rich universe, where plenty more interesting twists can happen.

Not quite as strong a finish as I would like By Kindle Customer I was so thrilled when I saw this book on the shelves at my local book store that I immediately went home and bought it on my Kindle. Over the first 2 books, I had been ensnared by Tycho, Giuliette, Aunt Alexa and the not so simple Marco. I was eager to see how they would continue to change and grow and how the author would wrap up this story. Let me say first, the kindle edition was plagued by some annoying editing mistakes. Commas were missing through out, which really interfered with my reading enjoyment of the story. I hope this is fixed in an update. As for the story itself, the first half of the book is strong. I don't want to give anything away but after a critical plot point occurs that forces Tycho to leave Vienna and Giuliette, things start to get shakey. And later, after the loss of another pivatol character, the story weakens further. All I can say without giving anything away is that the second part of the story lacks heart and is far too full of battle scenes. There are some other plot contrivances that happen when Tycho meets some mythical creatures in a cave that really didn't have to occur and feel utterly out of place. So many things go wrong for me in the second half of this book. Giuliette's character becomes very flat and two dimentional, Amelia is wasted, and nothing new happens with Tycho. Several plot lines from previous books are never addressed again. And the ending. The ending is simply abrupt, contrived and unsatisfactory on some levels. I was expecting a big pay off for my journey with Tycho and Giuliette and I didn't get it. I was expecting to see a new evolution in Tycho and didn't get that.I know this review is vague but what you are feeling is how I was feeling at the end of the story. Like, is that it? Honestly, the last half of the book felt rushed, as if the goal was just to get something out and tie things up in bow even if that had to happen artificially. So yes, at the end of the journey, I am disappointed. But of course, you still have to read it if you have read the 2 previous books. The second book is still the strongest, like the second movie in the original Star Wars trilogy.I still thank JG for Tycho. He is still one of the most interesting characters I have encountered. I will miss him.

Beauty Meets Beast in San Francisco

Accepting employment as a governess after hard times hit her family, medieval scholar Rosalind Hawkins is surprised when she learns that her mysterious employer has no children, no wife, and she is not to meet with him face to face. Instead, her duties are to read to him, through a speaking tube, from ancient manuscripts in obscure, nearly forgotten dialects.

A requirement for the job was skill in translating medieval French, and she now understands the reason for that requirement, and assumes her unseen employer’s interest in the descriptions of medieval spells and sorcery is that of an eccentric antiquary. What she does not realize is that his interest is anything but academic. He has a terrible secret and is desperately searching for something that can reverse the effects of the misfired spell which created his predicament.

It takes a lot to impress me anymore. I was not impressed by this one either...I was astounded and overjoyed. It is so fresh and unique, no matter what the cover looks like. Here is a slice of plot for you. Rose Hawkins' world is turned upside down by the sudden death of her father. Her world spins out of control when she finds out that her father has left her penniless. So, with very few respectable options, Rose journeys from her home in Chicago to mysterious San Fransisco to become a governess in a wealthy household. She arrives to find that she has been deceived, there are no children, only a wealthy invalid who longs for someone to help with his research. Rose stays and is content...for awhile. Rose is far too intelligent not to notice that things are not exactly as they seem. Where are the servants? Why can't she see her employer's face? And what are the strange manuscripts she must read to him? I don't want to spoil it, so I'll stop right there. This is a great book. The love story is romantic, but never sappy. Best of all, you feel like they really get to know and understand each other. There is some mystery, adventure, and magic thrown in too. And a rather unusual, but just right, happily ever after.

52 of 55 people found the following review helpful. 'Magickal' modern version of 'Beauty and the Beast' By Joy Fleisig In what is Mercedes Lackey's best novel to date, 'Beauty and the Beast' is updated to 1905, where fabulously wealthy rail baron and Fire Master Jason Cameron has transformed himself into a wolfman and he needs the help of an tame scholar (female so that she is no threat) to help translate the Magickal texts that will give him clues to breaking the spell. Instead of the mouse he expects, he gets a lioness, Rosalind ('Rose') Hawkins, a classicalist and medievalist whom he has brought from Chicago to his San Francisco estate under false pretenses, supposedly to be a governess to his non-existent children. Penniless, she is more than willing change the terms of the initial agreement to do interesting work in luxurious surroundings, even with someone who may be a madman. She eventually learns the truth about Jason and begins to grow as a Magician herself. But Jason has enemies who do not want him to return to human form and full power, or wish to exploit his power for themselves. And then terror strikes, both from Magickal and natural sources....Lackey has done considerable research into this historical period and does a very good job of bringing early 20th century Chicago and San Francisco to life. She also makes the Cameron mansion, and indeed, all the other locales, into very real places with her rich descriptions - I have noticed that she is particularly good at describing food, clothing and furniture. More importantly for a fantasy novel, she makes the supernatural as real as the commonplace. Her magic systems (Western and Eastern) are extremely well thought out, even 'scientific', and undoubtedly based on 'real' magic systems. There is a nice parallel here to the magic of Valdemar, which is measurable and follows mathematical laws. The story moves at a crisp pace, full of dramatic situations, culminating in the horror of the San Francisco earthquake, and Lackey's style makes the book nearly impossible to put down. What has always been Lackey's greatest strength is her ability to create characters who one can immediately like and identify with, even in her earliest novels where the technical prowess of her writing was limited. I cared about what happened to Rose from the very beginning. She is a strong, smart, intellectual, adaptable, no-nonsense person, perhaps a bit TOO forward and opinionated, and yes, a little greedy. True, I share her interest in medieval studies, and the fact that she's an opera lover certainly doesn't lower my estimation of her, but I don't think readers who aren't interested in these topics to the extent that I am will also empathize with her. Jason too is a fascinating character - despite his hubris, selfishness, and ruthlessness, he has many moments of sympathy and is Rose's intellectual equal. The repartee between them and their growing affection is believable from the beginning. Yes, I suppose it's 'predictable' that they fall in love - but it doesn't stop one from wanting to see the way it happens. Also many of the 'minor characters', from Professor Cathcart to Earth Master Pao to Snyder to the townhouse maid to the boorish salesman who molests Rose, are vividly drawn, as are the Salamander and Sylph who serve Jason and Rose. And, oh yes, what would a Lackey novel be without a VERY special horse?I admit, though, that I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the reviewers who complain that Lackey's villains are a little too 'black'. Although Paul Du Mond is a well developed character despite his viciousness, we know that Jason is no saint, so it might have added a bit more depth if Simon Beltaire had a really legitimate reason to dislike him. While unlike other reviewers I didn't have a problem with the climax (an interesting spin on Cocteau), I did feel that Lackey glosses over a MAJOR accomplishment Rose achieves in the epilogue (I'm not referring to romantic matters). I also thought the character names were a bit too 'romance-novelish', but that's picky. To be even more picky, I noticed a few things that apparently escaped the proofreader - at one point Jason calls Rose 'Miss Cameron' instead of 'Miss Hawkins'!I think Lackey has created a wonderful universe here and I would like to see her write many more novels set in it. Although I enjoyed 'The Serpent's Shadow', I want to see more of Rose and Jason - perhaps Lackey eventually plans for them to team up with Maya and Peter? I am already imagining the adventures they can have. If nothing else, considering how much Rose loves Caruso, I really hope that she and Jason live to see Jussi Bjorling's San Francisco debut in 1949!Perhaps this book is not 'great literature', as some of the other reviewers seemed to expect, but it doesn't have to be. Even if it doesn't have the philosophical and emotional depth of GREAT SF/Fantasy, it has the sense of wonder and imagination of very GOOD SF/Fantasy. Maybe 'The Fire Rose' is 'mind candy', but it's extraordinarily delicious, and I've sampled it over and over again.

At first I wanted to scream "NO...not another one" but I quickly changed my tune.....This book is more than I expected. A well developed, and well written story with remarkable characters & a different twist to the original form of the B&B tale...This book gives us an unexpected Beauty & the Beast story that will remain well with you....even after the last page is read and the book put away. Ebook PDF Devil's Guard Counterattack, by Eric Meyer

This is the third book in Eric Meyer's series about the exploits of a group of former Waffen-SS officers who engage the enemy in the never-ending slaughter in Vietnam. It's 1968, the fighting escalates, the body count mounts, and the fighter-bombers and gunships daily prowl the skies in the relentless hunt for their elusive enemy.

Jurgen Hoffman, a former SS officer, has fought through the hell of the Eastern Front in Russia, through Indochina in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion - only to become embroiled in the arrival of the Americans. Now comfortably running a civilian airline with other former soldiers of the Waffen-SS, their hopes of finding peace are abruptly shattered.

Tet, a word that will live in infamy, sets the country on fire. It's to become the turning point of the Vietnam War as the communists launch attacks on the major cities of South Vietnam. With their airline in ruins after a mortar attack, the outlook is bleaker than ever for Hoffman.

When his wife is kidnapped by the Viet Cong, it's time to strike back. The former warriors of Hitler's brutal Das Reich and Totenkopf Divisions are forced to pick up their weapons again and take the fight to the Viet Cong. Once again, Ho Chi Minh's guerrillas are about to meet the Devil's Guard.

Thirteen exquisite houses create a portrait of life in one of America’s most exclusive coastal destinations, along the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod.   Hutker Architects, led by founding principal Mark A. Hutker, has designed more than three hundred houses along the New England shore. A member of the close community on Martha’s Vineyard since his arrival in 1985, Hutker has become an expert at interpreting the ideal lifestyles of his clients within the respected traditions and restrictive codes of the beautiful but fragile environment.   In their design and construction, these houses honor the vernacular traditions of craft and indigenous materials, are deeply respectful of the cherished landscape, and demonstrate a lively range of solutions to building on the bluffs and dunes that line the shores of the Vineyard and Cape Cod. A working organic farm fulfills a family’s dream of simpler values; a luxurious renovation saves the best of an antique shingle cottage while transforming it for contemporary family life and a raised structure clad in naturally weathered boards combines the legacy of midcentury regional modern architecture with Cape Cod’s maritime tradition.   The firm is committed to the principle “Build once, well,” looking to the historic architecture of the region and the inherited experience of its carpenters and craftspeople as inspiration for contemporary design. The result is an architecture that is at once adaptable and livable, yet enduring, efficient, inevitable, and appropriate.   The houses sit lightly on the land, deferring to their surroundings, often built as a series of modest pavilions linked by passages or grouped to enclose an outdoor space. Creative design solutions—a light-filled gallery running the full length of a house, a continuous wall of sliding glass doors—make houses both open to views, but protective in a storm. Specially commissioned photography captures the craftsmanship and the settings of the houses, from dramatic bluffs overlooking the sea to secluded coves and rolling meadows filled with wildflowers, creating a unique portrait of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard.

A Sense of Place: Houses on Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod, by Mark A. Hutker, Marc Kristal

Review “Meet the architect behind Cape Cod’s most beautiful homes. A Sense of Place by architect Mark. A. Hutker looks at more than 300 houses he has designed along the breezy Massachusetts shore.” —Architectural Digest“After designing homes on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard for thirty years, Hutker Architects is known for building livable places that respect the region’s heritage. Their recently published book showcases thirteen projects that combine enduring architecture with new innovations—a stunning collection for the library of any sea-lover. With five essays and more than 200 photographs, the book is a tribute to the evolution of the cape house, with naturally weathered boards that honor coastal views and connect generations. The included homes highlight the firm’s motto, 'build once, well,' as Hutker and his principles tap into history and make homes new without banishing the old.” —Boston Home magazine“Place is a powerful word for an architect. It describes the intangible feel of a location—its history, its present, and its future, all while drawing on what’s around the site, so that being there is unlike being anywhere else. Hutker Architects, which has offices in Falmouth and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, has 30 years’ experience designing houses among the rocky bluffs and sandy dunes of the New England coastline, and the firm’s book explores what makes the area unique. With five essays and more than 200 photographs (the cover shot is by Design New England contributing photographer Eric Roth) of houses that the firm, led by principal Mark A. Hutker, has designed, the book explores the values guiding every choice, from tapping local traditions to using native materials to infusing the inimitable histories of each community.”—Design New England“Hutker Architects’ second book features photography of 13 homes on Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard as well as essays about each place. On the Vineyard, projects included range from The Grey Barn Farm in Chilmark to a home overlooking the Edgartown Harbor. 'Our goal is to create the kind of structures that the community will want to defend in the future.'”—The Vineyard Gazette“Projects that defer to their surroundings and feature creative design solutions.” —The Boston Globe“Lose yourself in the enchanting world of architect Mark Hutker, and his realm of Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. Add some lobster rolls, white wine, and dream away.”—InsideChic“Hutker as a firm is known for its sense of stewardship and sense of place, and the work shown here reflects that, with weathered wooden structures and tiled roofs which are congruent with the architectural vernacular their chosen areas have always been known for. The Salt Shack on Buzzards Bay is representative, with its variation on a traditional shape and its use of windows to open up as much of the house, which is set on a narrow neck of land, as possible. Right outside can be seen pristine, protected bay. The interiors are typically clean and spare.”—Women's Wear Daily

Very Nice, But No Plans and Not The Best of The Hutker Publications By SLS A well-known Seattle bookseller once urged architect/author Mike Hutker to write "a nice little book". A Sense of Place is indeed a very nice BIG gallery of the work of the Hutker Architects firm. So why might it not be considered a 5-star book? Because it simply cannot compete with its predecessor compendium - Heirlooms To Live In. (Heirlooms to Live In: Homes in a New Regional Vernacular)Packaged in a sophisticated Atlantic blue folding box, Heirlooms satisfied readers with numerous plans, plenty of pages for each project, and photos that invited the eye to stay awhile. It was a masterful announcement of the Hutker sensibility: a stylism rich with traditional New England Cape Cod elements (such as wood shingled siding), yet embellished to create a new modern classic (with structures seemingly equal parts window and wall). At over 400 pages, it contained very little text, opting instead to use the visuals as right-brain candy for the inner architect in anyone.A Sense of Place does have some merits over Heirlooms. The photographs are more lush, larger, and glossier. The text is exquisite. Hutker engages at eye level without presumptiveness; each page is an invitation to read every word. But the pictorial content is lighter. Interior shots predominate and there are no plans. No. Plans. Two of the saddest words known to fans of architecture.Still, highly recommended. But Heirlooms is well worth the search and acquisition. The Hutker style is worth it, and either book will leave you wanting more - in a good way, like any "nice, little book" should.

The firm has designed over 300 houses in the area and in this book, 13 are featured. It shows beautiful houses which mostly open to the outside,of course, tall glass wondows looking out to the meadows or open out into the sea. It has gourmet kitchens, big and small, and spa like bathrooms and designer pools. The book gives us a nice, good tour of the million dollar homes in this prime real estate. It has gorgeous pictures of the house interiors and close up of architectural details. Photographs are mostly full page. A well written overview of the architect's approach to the design and materials used is an enjoyable read. It also presented solutions on how to design without disturbing the natural landscape of the island. The houses featured varied from traditional to more contemporary. It was obvious that it catered to each individual owner's needs and taste. One thing is common, it all had an understated elegance. Even the simplest house looked expensive, but subtle. Quality was there without being loud. A nice cue we could all take, on designs and life :).My wife and I enjoyed this book so much. A nice gift to anyone who enjoys home interiors, architecture and design.

Each house is beautifully photographed with the emphasis on the exteriors and views. Each chapter covers a group of homes and is introduced with a text introduction emphasizing the unique problems each house had to solve. Additional text for each house provides more detail.Hutker's firm, based in this area, puts great emphasis on working with the vernacular architecture and the restrictions of both the sites and the local restrictions on building. The result is often unique solutions to the problems posed. For my tastes I vastly prefer the projects that were renovations or additions to existing structures because they are more traditional than the new construction. Even so, I found many of the solutions in the newer projects intriguing. We can't all afford custom-built homes, nor are we likely to build houses with glass walls in areas with severe winters. Even so, this book is a delight for lovers of domestic architecture as well as lovers of Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod.
