One with no cutting of fat quarters etc. Maybe someone would publish a book on Charms and not have to cut them into other shapes in order to make a beginners quilt. So, you see I am a real beginning beginner lol

By Brit This book is great for beginners except that quilting is not a low cost hobby to get into. Unless you look for sales and use coupons at your local craft and sewing stores it can be very costly. I recommend starting out with yard sales and online to purchased a used sewing machine or the local sew and vacuum shops that have refurbished ones at a lower cost. Other than saying that quilting is an inexpensive hobby this book is great for anyone starting out.

Quilting for beginners is one thing, but this book explains the most common sense stuff, I read it in about 15 minutes and did not learn anything I didn't already know. Things like - you might want to use a rotary cutter rather than shears or scissors. Sorry Ms. Walter's but this book was more basic than beginners. This was more like, totally clueless of what a quilt even is.

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO REALLY CARING WELL FOR YOUR BULLDOG — WE INTERVIEWED A BULLDOG TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY REALLY WANT

BULLDOGS HAVE VERY SPECIAL NEEDS THAT MUST BE MET - HERE IS HOW YOU CAN PAIR THE RIGHT WINE WITH THE RIGHT FOOD TO KEEP YOUR BULLDOG HAPPY AND SLOBBERING. THIS BOOK WILL REVOLUTIONIZE BULLDOG TRAINING

Noted bulldog poet and gourmet Bull Dogger gives practical advice on how to care for your bulldog. Bull Dogger notes: "We bulldogs cannot expect you humans to understand all our complex needs. After all, you are only human! This guidebook on how to raise a bulldog seeks to fill in the gaps in human knowledge about what the sophisticated bulldog needs to thrive and survive in this world where humans work so bulldogs can eat, drink wine, nap and write poetry. By following these rules, humans can enjoy the many benefits of having a bulldog in their lives. We offer loyalty, companionship, protection and farts so loud as to scare off any unwanted visitors. Seriously, our farts can blow out windows and set off car alarms. Retreat, Intruder, or I will fart again! You have been warned! So study well, you humans who describe yourselves as "owner" - we bulldogs are counting on you to understand your support role in our lives while we stay in your home and eat your food and drink your wine. Lots of wine."

In this book you will find practical advice like this:

  • Comfortable Bed: Please provide us with a comfortable bed. Our slobber and sleeping space needs to have some elegant padding so we can fully rest our manly bulldog bulk after a tough day drinking in the park with our bulldog homies.
  • Nutrition: The Bulldog “Six Meals A Day For Strength” Program -Let us put it to you this way - breakfast is one of our six favorite meals of the day.
  • Grooming: If you have time to take an accredited course in bulldog grooming, that would be highly appreciated!
  • Other Pets In The Home: We see no need for them - parrots or Mynah birds in a cage? If we wanted to hear something repeat itself, we would hire an Irish drunk to tell stories. No birds unless they are cooked. Can’t be too clear on this.
  • Temperature Control: Look, we are built for comfort, not for speed. Our thick coat was designed for the misty weather of England. So have an umbrella handy if we are out for a walk. When we get overheated, we sometimes have a bulldog meltdown.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very amusing! By Rob Anderson Yes, bulldog! I have received my briefing on your dietary and naps needs and will follow them to the strict letter of the law. I fear your farts! This book hit my funny bone about our lazy bulldog.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Laugh out loud! By Book Reader Reviewer I always wondered what bulldogs would say if they could talk beyond the barking and slobbering I get from mine. And now I know that they want. They are kind of like the men in my life — they want lots of wine, a place to snooze and not too much exercise … It’s a funny book and a great parody of all the dog whisperer books.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Great and Funny Read By J Grey These books where the pet speaks always give me a chuckle and this one about bulldogs is a real fun way to spend an afternoon. I can just imagine our bulldog saying this kind of stuff (he is getting older and little grumpy in his senior age).

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Introduction The routine of a typical weekday morning is interrupted, our attention caught by conversational voices on the radio. The intimate stories told by these anonymous people cause us to smile, to marvel, and sometimes to weep. Public radio employs the simple yet enduring medium of storytelling to illuminate and awaken. As they unfold in all their individuality, the stories we hear there—of resilience, acceptance, and devotion in the face of adversity—communicate the human struggle to overcome inequity, trauma, illness, or even fate; they draw generations together, to preserve the roots of a culture and nurture a sense of pride and belonging; they reveal a deeper understanding of human experience and document the power of place to shape our perspectives and life journeys. In listening, not just hearing, we bear witness to extraordinary displays of empathy, compassion, strength, courage, determination, and forgiveness. Each emotionally inspiring story illustrates the depth of humanity, rekindled by trying circumstances. In the course of our work, we have discovered similar stories, stories shared while in the garden, by those with cancer, HIV/AIDS, physical challenges, or mental illness; by veterans, inmates, or the homeless; by the survivors of ethnic cleansing and torture; by the elderly facing the end of life. Each and every storyteller offers poignant examples of what nature means to him or her. It is what therapists hear and witness every day in the garden from those experiencing trauma, injury, and illness. Shared through intimate conversations, these stories provide motivation to design and evaluate therapeutic or healing gardens, to document further their benefits, and to educate people about them. The garden is sanctuary, a place to grieve and escape, to regain focus, hope, and strength, or to reconnect with family or one’s former self. These gardens are not only relevant for those in hospitals, senior care facilities, or medical clinics; they also serve populations in need at schools, prisons, and community gardens.   Gardens can and do restore our state of health. They have the capacity to restore the body, mind, and spirit; and based on a growing body of evidence-based research, this can be said with conviction and proof. If being in a garden positively contributes to the healing and restorative process, who is it that needs a therapeutic garden and why? Many people who have experienced the benefits of gardens and nature will tell you that everyone needs a therapeutic garden. Others believe that people who are clinically unwell in body or mind are the only ones in need of a therapeutic garden. We believe that everyone needs easy access and proximity to nature and deserves this sacred connection that affords significant health benefits. Humans are hardwired to connect with the natural world. We have an evolutionary need to affiliate with nature. Originally, it was key to our survival; it is now part of our humanity. While everyone needs and deserves safe, easy, and unencumbered access to healing nature, we return to a central question: is every garden a therapeutic garden? For now, consider this simple yet eloquent quote: “Gardens are where people and the land come together in the most inspiring way” (Rodale 1987). Some key words here—“people,” “land,” “come together,” “inspiring”—will factor significantly in ongoing discussions about therapeutic gardens and the lives of those who are nourished by them. Being in nature has the capacity to bring people together, mediate social strife, renew one’s energy and capacity, and nourish the senses. As humans, we find inspiration and consolation in nature; we grow stronger, learn, reflect, and refocus in the refuge it provides.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent -- Nothing else compares to this book By Occupational Therapist I have several books on therapeutic gardens but as an Occupational Therapist, I really wanted to find something that would show how to use a natural space to invite and promote various ways of engaging in nature for different ages and populations. This books is terrific -- nothing else like it. Thank you for such a lovely and instructive guide.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. While this book looks and reads like a University level textbook for a landscape design class By AC enjoying a good read While this book looks and reads like a University level textbook for a landscape design class, the pages are packed with information that I plan to put to use as a home gardener. The "design considerations" throughout the book provide both insight into the needs of the people who will use the gardens and advice on how to meet the needs.I like the way the book is organized:At times, I have physical challenges. I want a place to reflect, remember, and take refuge. I am a learner. I want a garden that nourishes my sensory system. I don't have cancer, dementia, or PTSD, but there is useful information in this book for designing a garden for people who do. This books answers the questions, "What garden design elements does this particular person need?" "What design elements should be avoided?" "Why?" and "Why not?"The examples shown in the book provide for clear understanding of the underlying design principles.

I downloaded this book on my Kindle app and read it on a recent trip to Florida with my large family. I read chapters of this book standing in line at an amusement park where there was a 65 minute wait. Yikes.Believe it or not I was able to tune out the noise and get into this book. Lots of helpful tips on how to simplify your life.Great book, quick read, helpful tips (some of which I applied during our vacation.....like fitting in fun exercise with kids)

The points the author hits home make a lot of sense without being too "preachy". There were some ideas that seemed like common sense in helping me to prioritize my life but there were other ideas that made me think quite a bit deeper. I would recommend this book.

Herbs & Spices: The Cook's Reference, by Jill Norman

From Booklist More and more herbs and spices appear in American kitchens daily, encouraged by television chefs and promoted through new ethnic cuisines entering the mainstream. Jill Norman's Herbs & Spices comes at exactly the right moment to guide readers through the tangle of leaves, seeds, and berries. Norman thoughtfully organizes herbs into major classifications by their predominant bouquets. This approach immediately assists the cook looking for substitutions. Norman's tasting notes, borrowing a vocabulary identical to that used for wine, establish a standard language for characterizing each item's salient aromas and flavors. Full-color, close-up pictures aid in identification. Text outlines culinary uses and purchasing and storing data and gives information on growing one's own herbs. A short recipe section offers examples of how specific herbs and spices are used in cooking. A directory of mail-order sources further assists those who lack local access. Norman has made a vital contribution to reference collections for quick identification of species and for the use of herbs and spices in cooking. This is a MUST HAVE if you love making your own recipes By Chris Baker I am a backyard BBQ fanatic who has started competing at local BBQ competitions. Outside of heat, smoke and meat, the most important part of making good BBQ is in your seasonings. Whether it is making a rub, a baste, or sauce, it is important to balance the flavors and recognize what flavors are needed to take your recipe to the next level. This book has all of the information I need to do exactly that. This book gets a LOT of use and abuse in my house, and I have used it as a reference to help me blend/enhance flavors for SO many recipes. I can not recommend this book highly enough. If you want to know about the flavors, uses and pairings of spices, this book will take care of you. The thing I like most about this book is how for each spice it mentions what other spices are typically used with it. This is very helpful when trying to narrow the search for another flavor to add to your recipes.

Marold `herbs & spices, the cook's reference' is the latest of eight different books on either herbs or spices by noted culinary editor and author, Jill Norman, one of the more influential disciples of the great English culinary writer, Elizabeth David, who contributed two books of her own to this subject.I chose this book to review since I had a backlog of herb and spice books to review, and I wanted to start with one I could assume to be a standard against which all other books can be measured. The problem with starting with the standard is I'm assuming this role purely on the basis of the author's reputation in the field. I am happy to say that I find virtually nothing in this book to invalidate my holding it up as a standard against which other books on the subject may be judged. For starters, Ms. Norman convinces us at the outset that the difference between an herb and a spice is vague enough around the world to require that we treat the two together, thereby eliminating any chance of leaving something out because it was not thought to be a spice or an herb. Part of this ambiguity is her statement that in the United States, a dried herb is considered a spice. Since Ms. Norman is an expert on the subject, I must assume that there is a faction in America that believes this. She states this to make it clear that her basis for distinguishing herbs from spices is based on the current British thinking on the subject. But, since she is covering both, the issue is academic in this book.Much more interesting is Ms. Norman's separation of the various herbs and spices into a large number of categories based on flavor. Herbs are divided into `Fresh and mild herbs' featuring parsley, `Sweet Herbs' featuring lavender, `Citrus or tart herbs' featuring lemon balm, `Licorice or anise herbs' featuring dill and fennel, `Minty herbs' featuring mint, `Onion herbs' featuring garlic, `Bitter or astringent herbs' featuring celery, `Pungent and spicy herbs' featuring sage, thyme, and cilantro. This division alone is a great service, as it gives us a sound basis for substituting one herb for the other, as when we may need borage, and see that it's in the same class as parsley.A deeper look at this lineup of herbs shows that Ms. Norman is covering a far broader range of species and varieties within species than most other books or sections of books on herbs. Most of us know of two or three varieties of basil. Ms. Norman shows us fourteen, divided between three groups, Genoese and purple basil (Ocimum basilicum), `other basils', and Asian basils. The inclusion of the scientific name is essential in a work like this. The most important need is when you wish to buy seeds to grow these plants, the scientific name is the only way you have to guarantee getting the species or variety you want. If you happen to see seeds for `Asian Basil', know that this could be any one of seven different species or varieties! Within sections such as those for the Asian basils, the pictures in this book really shine, as the pictures of these seven varieties are all on the same page, including stems and flowers in many cases, as many of the leaves from two different varieties are almost identical in appearance. We are especially happy that Ms. Norman has drawn outside the lines in her including several plant species which border on what we think as teas (such as sassafras), salad greens (such as sorrel and celery), or root vegetable (such as horseradish and wasabi). The only lapse I can find in all the material on herbs is that the distinction between the Mediterranean bay is not clearly made from the New World plants often called `bay'.Spices get an equally thorough treatment, being divided between `Nutty spices' such as sesame, `Sweet spices' such as vanilla, `Acidic and fruity spices' such as tamarind, `Citrus spices' such as lemon grass, `Licorice or anise spices' such as anise, `Warm and earthy spices such as saffron, `Bitter or astringent spices such as capers, `Pungent spices' such as chiles, ginger, mustard, and pepper. One of my fondest discoveries in this book is that not only are ginger and galangal shown to belong to two different biological genus, they are categorized as in two different taste classes. These two are commonly mistakenly lumped together. The sections on chilis (genus capsicum) are as vividly colorful as all the others, with a surprise in that the heat in a chili species is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 rather than the better known (in the U.S. at least) Scoville scale. The chapter in this book which makes it the only book you should need on herbs and spices is the one on recipes, featuring combinations for all the world famous herb and spice mixes, and lots you may never have heard of. The very best aspect of this section is that it provides not one recipe for things such as bouquet garni, but seven, for beef, pork, lamb, poultry, game, fish, and vegetables. The very last chapter on general recipes could have easily been left out, as what comes before is more than enough to justify this as the only book you will need on herb and spice usage. One thing some readers may miss and the one thing that may justify a second book in you library dedicated to herbs and spices is one that deals with the history and geography of herb and spice origins. This book will not satisfy your curiosity over how New World Tomatoes joined up with their soul mates, Mediterranean basil. An excellent book and a `must have' for a foodie library.

It is divided into three sections Herbs, Spices and Recipes. The first two sections are organized identically; an introduction, categories/groupings of herbs or spices and a section on preparing herbs or spices. Herb groupings are Fresh and mild herbs, Sweet herbs Citrus or tart herbs, Licorice or anise herbs, Minty herbs, Oniony herbs, Bitter or astringent herbs, Pungent and spicy herbs. Spice groupings are Nutty spices, Sweet spices, Acidic and fruity spices, Citrus spices, Licorice or anise spices, Warm and earthy spices, Bitter or astringent spices, pungent spices. Each individual herb or spice has a page that includes pictures, history, notes on flavor use how it is harvested, culinary uses, other spices/herbs it combines with. The pictures and information combine to make this a top notch reference.Recipes section is divided into two main sub-sections Blending herbs and spices and Cooking with herbs and spices. There is also a bibliography, sources and an index. The Recipes for herb blends is shorter than expected but nice and represent other cultures. The spice blends are from around the globe and a longer more comprehensive list there are also recipies for sauces and marinades. Both herb and spice blend Recipes include suggestions and notes on how to use them and the best food pairings.Cooking with herbs and spices has a good range of Recipes and the author packs a lot into this small section; soups and light dishes, fish, meat (includes three chicken recipes), vegetables, pasta noodles & grains, desserts and drinks ( including ice cream, Pineapple ginger cooler, Mojito). The bibliography gives a detailed and exhaustive list of sources should you need to do further research. The source section gives contact information on places to purchase herbs and spices it is also a long and detailed contact information many including, addresses, phone numbers, fax numbers and web sites, and e-mail if available. If you are a beginner and want to learn more about how to use herbs and spices or if you are an experienced cook and want to expand your flavor palate this is a great reference for you.

The techniques and material involved in paper cutting are fairly simple and easy to explain, and this will be covered at the start of the book. Each project will then consist of a template, which will be reproduced full-size on the right-hand page, and a finished paper cut styled shot based on that design, on the left, together with the instructions. Because of the nature of the craft, very little step-by-step instruction is required, so this will take up very little room. The designs will be simple enough for beginners, though attractive and interesting enough to inspire more advanced paper cutters, and the finished paper cuts will be cut from a variety of colored and white papers and mounted on different colored backgrounds. They will also be coded with the level of difficulty from 1-5.

Beautiful introduction to paper cutting with 20 lovely templates By Chris M I bought this book to surprise my wife and she is over the moon with it; it’s a lovely introduction to paper cutting with hints and tips throughout and 20 templates for you to try. What my wife prefers about this paper cutting book to all others she has read is its simplicity; it doesn’t overwhelm you with needless information and make paper cutting seem like this daunting craft which other books can tend to do. Instead the author encourages you to have a go: “it is something to be enjoyed, rather than worrying about perfecting your cuts”…. And then there are 20 beautiful and large templates for you to copy and print and have a go with. Perfect. There isn’t a great deal more to say about this book other than if you like Paper Panda and or paper cutting, you will love this book, the designs within are simply wonderful and the tips / instructions throughout from Louise Firchau are really encouraging and helpful, exactly what my wife needs as a novice paper cutter! Very highly recommended.

Instant Success By Rebekah Wratney "Instant Learning: How to Learn Anything Instantly," is a great practical book for anyone who wants to learn about different learning strategies, especially for the price.Chapter two is a review for readers who have read "Instant Studying: How to Study Instantly." You can buy it separately to greater understand interactive studying and learning, as I have read it earlier, I highly recommend it.The rest of "Instant Learning: How to Learn Anything Instantly," discusses various theories on how to learn anything instantly in Chapters three though six by Eidetic learning, learning with your environment, shortening learning time, and knowing everything about a topic at a glance.Chapter seven is the practice of learning with several exercises to help you with the previous learned theories. This was the most beneficial chapter for me because as discussed in the book, I learn the best through visualizing and practicing what I learn. So the fact that they give examples of how to practice what they tell you is great.Chapter eight explains how you retain what you learn. This chapter brings out excellent, new ideas on how to remember what you learn. As a college student, a lot of my time is spent cramming for tests and these strategies will help me the next to remember what I learn.Chapter nine is an encouragement to keep on learning, emphasizing the importance of making sure that you find the best strategy for you to learn from the book.Overall, this book has some great ideas and exercises to understand how to learn quickly; however, because there were several typos the book seem less reliable, but after trying some of the exercises, the strategies work well for me. I think that makes the book worth it.

Very informative and packed with strategies By Hanny “Instant Learning: How to learn anything instantly” is a great book for anyone looking to be effective and learn different learning strategies. This book breaks down the learning process and teaches you how to reprogram your brain.Chapter 1 talks about how to be an effective learner, chapter 2 talks about how to make learning interactive and as you advance within the chapters, a different strategy is presented. When reading this book, I found chapter 3 interesting. Chapter 3 – How to do eidetic learning in a snap taught me the FIT technique. In other words, it taught me the freezing of information. It explained that in order to freeze information, you would need to be like a camera capturing the information the moment you see it. Your eyes are the lens and you need to concentrate in order for this technique to work. Something I found useful, was the breakdown of FIT for different situations – FIT for numbers, FIT for written content, FIT for imagery and FIT for Auditory Learning. I have a huge problem with numbers, and at first when I read the FIT for numbers, I thought that it was strange to apply images to a series of four digits, but after I did the exercise at the end, I realized how well this strategy had actually worked for me.Chapter 5 was another interesting chapter that taught me how to program my mind to shorten learning time. To do this, there is a visual technique called the effective projection visualization. This allows you to keep the information fresh in your head and by practicing mentally, you are able to improve not only time, but it also helps improve your learning ability. By replaying the training or whatever it is that you learned, you are able to train your brain to store that exact memory. As someone who is studying Business, I found this book to be very informative and helpful in regards to how I remember information. This book is packed full of strategies that help reprogram the way you remember information and helps you how to learn anything instantly.

Action-Based Standing-Up Learning VS Traditional Sitting-Down Learning By Natali S Action-Based Standing-Up Learning VS Traditional Sitting-Down LearningI always have a love for learning and decided to pick this book up. What I usually expect from a learning book are some good learning techniques and methods. Instant Learning has some very interesting ways to learn, but not in a traditional sense.I think when most people think of learning, they think about opening a book or browsing on a computer at your leisure aka "textbook sitting-down learning" because that's how we're all first exposed and taught in school.Well, that was definitely not the case here. Instant Learning has a more interactive "action-based standing-up learning," making it different in the learning department. I think this is where most people would not expect, but judging by the cover, it did try to convey that. This caught me off guard as well, but at the same time I found enjoyable. Some of stuffs I found interesting were how to do photographic learning using the metaphor of your eyes being a camera lens and how to incorporate your environment to help you learn when you only have one shot at learning if you're on the job training on operating things with a bunch of other people on the tour.I would recommend this book more for job trainees than for students due to that nature. If you're a student, however, I would say another book by this same series, Instant Study Skills, would be more up your alley with the more textbook leisure approach.

The series gives you thoroughly enjoyable, character-driven stories loaded with authentic content: just what we have come to expect from this author. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. finally... By Anne ...an author who can write almost as fast as I can read! Lattey has published three new books in just a couple months (or one month?) and they are like Pringles, I just can't stop! Anxiously awaiting the next one!To be a bit more specific, this Pony Jumpers novella was a very interesting look at Kate, who we met in the first PJ book. Like all of Lattey's heroines, Kate is a unique character with her own motivations and issues. One of the things I love about this author's writing is despite the serialized nature of her novels, all the characters are very much individuals. They are all teenaged girls who love horses and show jumping, but that is where the similarities end. Each new narrator allows the reader to experience this world from a unique perspective.Great voice, as always, and wonderful horses, though perhaps not as many schooling horse scenes as I would like! I love to read about the characters working through training issues, like the one scene in this book with the horse with the late change or most of the second Flying Change (Jay) book. At any rate, Lattey definitely takes a very realistic angle on the horses; they are not brilliant winners every time and have their issues, but that is all part of working with horses and something these girl narrators are all learning in their own ways!

Kate Latteys ability to write from the different views of her characters (AJ in the first book and Kate in this second) is phenomenal. Looking forward to the next character! The characters are believable, the ponies included and so is the storyline. As someone who enjoys teaching, it's great to see Kate subtly teaching her young readers about studs and tendon injuries.More please!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I loved getting to know Katy better By Jenn S. I'm loving this new Pony Jumpers series - they're shorter reads than Lattey's other books, but that is not a problem! She still manages to create well-developed - and likeable- characters. She knows her horses and how to craft interesting and plausible plots. I loved getting to know Katy better, and seeing other familiar characters. Looking forward to the 3rd in the series, which I hear may be about the "villainous" Susannah!

Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 – April 11, 1935) was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Green has been called ”the mother of the detective novel.” Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the ‘girl detective’: in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green ”stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful ”whodunits.” In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green’s innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as ”clews,” the coroner’s inquest, and expert witnesses. Yale Law School once used her books to demonstrate how damaging it can be to rely on circumstantial evidence. Written in 1878, her first book, The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer’s Story, sparked a debate in the Pennsylvania Senate over whether the book could ”really have been written by a woman.” Green was in some ways a progressive woman for her time—succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers—but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women’s suffrage.

By Richard Moore I'm so happy to see some of the great works of Anna Katherine Green; she has become one of my favorite writers, after I ran out of Christie's books to read. I found out that Agatha Christie, got into writing after reading Greens' books, who was a bestselling author who publishing about 40 books. I read she was first poet and later became a novelist to get attention to her poetry, however, she was so successful at mystery plotting, (she was an expert at the gradual unfolding of the mystery through the successful unearthing of clue after clue), that she dove right into mystery writing only. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing legally accurate stories, something like Law and Order in the way that the stories are accurate and sometimes based on actual cases. Her many fans besides me, include such literary luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Agatha Christie. In fact, not just Christie, but Rinehart wrote that it was the novels of Anna Katharine Green which first inspired her to become writers of mystery fiction to.In this book, which I just finished and was so enjoyed, you will find Victorian detective writing at its finest. The era of Sherlock Holmes, gas lights and horse drawn carriages. In this mystery we are treated to the immortal master of deduction Mr. Gryce - watch and discover how Gryce solves a murder that baffled everyone until at the end, we watch him unknot the murder using The Clue of the Hasty Arrow.Gryce is perfect.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "I feared a plot" By Patto Published in 1917, this mystery puts us in the capable hands of Detective Gryce, now an octogenarian with rheumatic twinges and moods of hating his profession. He sympathizes with anyone who evades him and his questions. He hates hounding people - and even pities the guilty.Nonetheless, the habits of a lifetime keep Gryce relentlessly on the trail. This crime is like nothing in his experience: in a New York museum a beautiful young girl is shot through the heart with an arrow!A highly emotional woman is found with her hand upon the arrow - and becomes incoherent for weeks. A would-be lover had been watching the girl from behind a pedestal, fearing that some plot threatened her. Twenty-two visitors were wandering around the rare coins, ancient bronzes, friezes and bas-reliefs. But nobody saw anything.Gryce's investigation takes him deep into the past lives of reluctant witnesses and unlikely suspects, looking for connections among them. He uncovers both nobility and villainy among his cast of characters. This isn't my favorite Green mystery, but I did enjoy it. Old Gryce is endearing, as is his ugly young assistant Sweetwater. The oddball clues are fun, and the melodramatic plot keeps the reader guessing. I'd recommend The Hasty Arrow to anyone who appreciates vintage mysteries.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a transitional detective novel By Paul Roberge Anna Katherine Green wrote "The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow" in 1917. While little known today, she influenced many later detective fiction writers. The novel is an excellent mystery story for the most part, but, like other period novels of the genre (AEW Mason's "At the Villa Rose" for example) it concludes with a lengthy confession and then an unnecessary back story. This approach may have appealed to readers of the period but might strike us as unnecessary and long-winded.One of the interesting aspects of detective fiction is its spiral structure--by that I mean the constant revisiting of the original event (generally a murder) and its implications until a satisfactory solution is found. I suspect most modern readers feel that the plot has reached a satisfying conclusion once the murderer is unmasked. A long romantic post-mortem (as in this novel) seems superfluous. We already have a pretty good idea of what happened. That being said, the book is worth reading even if you breeze through the last several chapters. It's a straightforward, well plotted novel. The detective, Mr. Gryce, is in his mid-eighties and sometimes uses his age to beguile others into thinking he's a doddering fool, but he still has enough of a spark of youth to go chasing potential witnesses over rough Catskill paths.
