35 Reasons Why You Need Peroxide Hydrogen In Your Home

You probably already have a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your home — it is a very common addition to many household’s cleaners and chemicals. Most people are familiar with its use as a disinfectant and to bleach your hair, but it has a large number of other, less well known, applications.

This books provides hints and tips on some surprising uses, including:

  • A ‘natural’ French manicure
  • Encouraging plants to grow in your garden
  • Growing oyster mushrooms in your fridge

It also discusses some of the things that Hydrogen Peroxide should NOT be used for — although it is often regarded as entirely ‘safe’ and ‘natural’, there are still some basic precautions you should be aware of. Hydrogen Peroxide may surprise you with how versatile it can be, and often at a fraction of the cost of branded household products. It also does not leave a harmful chemical residue behind — Hydrogen Peroxide breaks down reasonably quickly when in contact with the air — making it suitable for uses in sensitive environments such as fish tanks and children’s play areas.

So why not discover the true potential of that overlooked brown bottle sitting under your sink?

Flash: The Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Second Chances (Flash the Donkey), by Rachel Anne Ridge

Review "Starred Review." Artist and designer Ridge's business was tanking, along with her attitude and emotional well-being. So why, Ridge wondered, would God have a bedraggled donkey show up in her driveway, adding to the stresses of her family? While it didn't make sense to keep Flash, as he was lovingly dubbed, Ridge and her family made room for the poor wandering animal in their hearts and home. Ridge figured out, sometimes the hard way, how to properly care for Flash, and as she paid attention to his needs, she learned a whole lot of positive lessons about herself, her faith, and her life. Ridge examines some of life's most difficult issues with insight gained from sharing a home with an equine personality, summarizing lessons learned in pithy statement that conclude chapters ("Be a service animal; "Make things right with others"). Readers will be clamoring for more of Flash as soon as they digest the last story in this powerful and uplifting memoir.--Publishers WeeklyFlash, a stray donkey, wanders onto the Ridge family's rural Texas property one night and ends up staying. Ridge--blogger, artist, wife, mother, and entrepreneur--recounts his story and the wisdom God gave her using this unlikely source.Ridge's voice is that of a friend offering encouragement and sound counsel. Her insights aren't earthshattering but are all solid life principles we should hear often. Each chapter holds an illustration from her odd and charming pet and a lesson, such as "Run with horses; the pursuit of excellence conquers fear" and "Stand where fruit is falling; the secret of abundance is in choosing gratitude," plus practical ways to put the insight into practice. She paints a clear picture of God's faithfulness through everyday life challenges, including financial problems, illness, and insecurity. Recommend to readers longing for encouragement.--CBA Retailers and Resources

Review Stories that teach spiritual lessons, delight with humor, and make me lean in closer to God’s heart are my favorites! And this unlikely treasure of a book does just that. You will fall in love with Flash and the way Rachel Anne processes their story together. (Lysa Terkeurst, NYT bestselling author of The Best Yes and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries)When I first heard that Rachel Ridge had written a book about her family’s donkey, Flash, I had no idea what to expect. Nothing could have prepared me for such a delightful experience! I loved every page of Flash, and Rachel has such a gift for story telling that you can absolutely picture each scene. This book made me laugh at Flash’s antics and cry as I identified with the lessons He has taught her family about the way God loves us and sees us. This book will make you fall in love with our Savior all over again and, more than likely, make you hope you can have your own pet donkey someday. (Melanie Shankle, NYT bestselling author of Sparkly Green Earrings and Antelope in the Living Room)This book is a delight; it’s an honest, funny, and encouraging reminder of the creative, loving ways that God pursues us, teaches us, and changes us. Granted, I never expected that I’d have so much in common with a donkey, but Flash has taught me more than I could have imagined. There’s not a doubt in my mind that you’re going to love this book, and when you finish reading it, you’re going to want to follow Flash’s lead and run with horses. Who knew that a donkey could be such a role model? Thanks, Rachel, for sharing these timeless lessons! (Sophie Hudson, Author of Home Is Where My People Are and blogger at BooMama.net)Flash is a marvelous, wonderful, funny, touching, and illuminating book. The author makes the good donkey Flash come alive on the pages. I agree with Rachel that God uses all sorts of things—from dogs to donkeys—to teach us more about himself, and all we have to do is pay attention. (Jim Kraus, Bestselling author of The Dog That Talked to God)Charming, poignant, funny, honest—Rachel Anne’s journey with Flash the donkey is pure reading pleasure as she shares her family’s misadventures with their four-legged friend. She opens her heart to us as well, helping us learn memorable lessons about doing life with more meaning and purpose. Flash is delightfully different. I loved it! (Liz Curtis Higgs, Bestselling author of The Girl’s Still Got It)|What a charming, endearing, numinous book—and donkey! From the first chapter, you will immediately fall in love with Rachel Anne Ridge and her beloved Flash. By the last line, your eyes will be opened to seeing the ways God shows up and reveals Himself in the most unexpected—and delightful—ways. (Lisa Whelchel, Actress and author of The Facts of Life and Friendship for Grown-Ups)Bravo to Rachel Ridge for this beautifully written book that so eloquently reminds us that our everyday happenings in life can be great lessons and blessings in disguise from our Maker—even in the form of a donkey! Her unique ability to paint this picture of love and compassion for one of God’s creatures in need, evolving into a new family member that unknowingly brings courage and empowerment to a woman with so much to give, will inspire anyone. Two things you will want when you turn the last page is a donkey in your yard and Rachel as one of your besties! (Cindy Owen, Given Entertainment Group)What in the world could a donkey teach me about life? Lots. Why? Because donkeys are simple creatures who live simple lives. Isn’t simplicity exactly what so many people are seeking to find amidst their busy and hectic existences? And the story is not just about the donkey. It’s about the author, Rachel Anne Ridge, who chooses to live a simple life, just a few yards down a simple road that she and I have shared for the last few years. In the pages of this book, you will find—in the life of this woman and in the life of her surprise pet donkey—that simplicity is beautiful. (Chrystal Hurst, Coauthor of Kingdom Woman)I always stand amazed at God’s infinite creativity. When Rachel and Tom Ridge faced a financial crisis, I would have suggested a financial advisor or career counselor. God chose to send a homeless donkey. Farmers often abandon male donkeys during hard times because they are deemed “worthless.” God showed Rachel that this stubborn and irrepressible animal was far from worthless. Flash used his considerable donkey charm to teach the family lessons about service, faithfulness, purpose, passion, and second chances. God spoke through a donkey in the Old Testament. Hundreds of years later, He spoke again through a homeless donkey named Flash. You will laugh (often) at the antics of Flash. You will be touched by the authenticity of Rachel’s writing. And you will be amazed at the depth of the lessons God revealed through an abandoned donkey with big ears and a bigger heart. (Dave Burchett, Author of Stay and When Bad Christians Happen to Good People)A kick-in-the-pants read! Flash is memoir plus heartwarming and sometimes stressful animal story, mixed together with spiritual truth, all tempered with humor at just the right spots. Though I live in the suburbs, this made me want to disobey my neighborhood’s bylaws and get myself a donkey! (Mary DeMuth, Author of The Wall around Your Heart)Rachel Ridge has a beautiful ability to take the common things of life (like words) and craft them in such a way that they flow like prose and poetry. Submerging yourself in Flash: The Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Second Chances is to become lost in a beautiful gallery of her finest art. With each turn of the page, the master storyteller shares a glimpse of humor, revelation, and hope. Every seemingly simple vignette leads you to a sweet discovery of spiritual truth hidden within the gentle donkey’s tale of adventure. Each eye-opening escapade feels like a breath of fresh air and gives you a hint at the tenderness and transparency of Rachel’s heart. We’d all like to have a friend like Flash, faithful and true. I recommend this book to anyone who has ever needed a true-blue friend, a second chance, or a fresh perspective. (Jan Greenwood, Pastor of Gateway Women and Gateway Church and author of Women at War)I believe that since Creation, God has used animals to teach us about ourselves and about our Creator—if we’ll pay attention. Rachel pays attention, and so will her readers as they delight in a quirky and lovable donkey, Flash. (Dandi Mackall, Author of Winnie the Horse Gentler, Backyard Horses, and Starlight Animal Rescue)Reader, BEWARE! By the end of this book you will be searching for a donkey for your own personal growth! From now on, every time I see one of these marvelous creatures out in the field, I will think of Flash, and I am sure a smile or giggle will follow, for the burden of this burrow is laden with humor and wisdom. Rachel has dignified a lowly creature to the point that you think it almost necessary to fence in your yard, buy some hay, and wait for the lessons to begin. Thank you, Rachel, for sharing your personal stories, and thank you, Flash, for being such a humorous teacher! (Tina Wesson, Survivor: The Australian Outback (Season Two) winner)I loved this whimsical, vulnerable, and simply profound book! Rachel tells how a broken, lost, and stubborn animal awakened her awareness of God’s voice in her life. Her story gives hope to anyone who has ever felt inadequate or unseen. She takes the simple and makes it shine to encourage the reader to look with a fresh perspective at the potential God puts in each of us. (Paige C. Green, Director of Adult Events, LifeWay Christian Resources)

How interesting could a donkey book be and how in the world could a donkey teach life lessons? It somewhat intrigued me and seemed the best option available and so I picked Flash to read and review and boy am I glad I did.Flash is a homeless donkey that just shows up at the Ridge's house one night when tensions were high and funds were low. After searching for the owners with no success, Flash became a part of the family and taught Rachel some life lessons. Flash was friendly, loyal and forgiving, except to the family dog, but even they made up before the dog died. He did not like change and would destroy things that were changed in his barn. He liked to supervise any going on in the barn as well and was always open for some TLC and treats. What did he teach Rachel? I could write a blog post on each lesson I think and I'm contemplating doing that or at least having a few more posts on these subjects. Most of them were areas that I needed lessons in as well and so that is probably what made the book even more interesting.1. Remember your name. Know whose you are.2. Know where to find refuge. True sanctuary is found in God alone3. Run with horses. The pursuit of excellence conquers fear.4. Find your passion. Passion leads to purpose5. Be a trailblazer. Persistence makes pathways for grace to follow.6. Wear your donkey heart on your sleeve. A well-lived life is an authentic life7. Stand where fruit is falling. The secret of abundance is in choosing gratitude8. Be a service animal. You are made to serve in love.9. Embrace change. Don't let fear of the unknown keep you from moving forward.10. Make things right with others. Don't miss your chance to forgive, accept and love.11. Your journey isn't about fixing donkey problems. It's about transformation.Good stuff to be learned and reminded of in this book and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for lessons from a donkey. This book was given me by Tyndale House for the purpose of reading and writing a review on it. All opinions expressed were my own.

Very well-written, insightful, and humorous true story By Crissy Hope The Homeless Donkey Who Taught Me about Life, Faith, and Second Chances is the most delightful story I have read in a long time. A bedraggled donkey and a stressed out family are serendipitously brought together in a heartwarming true tale of the unique blessings that animals can bring into our lives. This amazing writer uses humor and wit to share her family’s adventures with Flash, who shows up unexpectedly one night and captures their hearts with his quirky antics. The author sees his arrival as God’s special gift during a difficult season of life. Her journey of faith and trust is set in motion by her unlikely involvement with this donkey, who displays simple yet profound lessons in his daily activities that Ridge insightfully applies to her own life. Knowing whose you are, finding sanctuary in God alone, serving others in love, choosing gratitude and forgiveness . . . these are just some of the “lessons from Flash” described in this book. I also enjoyed the photos of Flash in each chapter and learning more about the roles donkeys have played in Biblical times and throughout history. A laugh out loud, hard to put down kind of book that uplifts the spirit and opens the eyes to see God’s goodness and glory in the simple things of daily life.I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher through the Tyndale Blog Network in exchange for an honest appraisal.

As an avid fan of Flash on social media, it was one of my most anticipated books of the year. And, golly, this donkey makes me grin from ear-to-ear. Indeed, my cheeks hurt from smiling as I heard how Flash trod over and revamped the life of Rachel Anne Ridge and her family. Full of soft, endearing life lessons from a donkey deemed "worthless", Flash is the perfect metaphor for the Creator's ability to use the most unusual treasures to expel light in our dark, unsure moments. After reading this book, I felt that Flash was my friend! Moreover, that all creatures can be used to remind us of the giddy, natural joy in everyday happenstances. You have read a ton of animal life lessons and uplifting stories, I am sure. From cats to rescue dogs. Maybe even a pig...But Flash? He's just the bee's knees! He is a heart-warming, funny, comical and sweet donkey who will leave you grinning and vulnerable, your eyes sheened with tears, your heart skipping fast with love.I LOVED THIS BOOK! It is the perfect antidote for any of those days when you can't see beyond the stress or blanket of all-too-human problems.Relatable, hysterical and full of hardcore simplistic truths to verve your spirit, Flash will kickstart your attitude!

  • Middlemarch, A Study of Provincial Life is a novel by English author George Eliot, first published in eight instalments (volumes) during 1871–2. The novel is set in the fictitious Midlands town of Middlemarch during 1829–32, and it comprises several distinct (though intersecting) stories and a large cast of characters. Significant themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, hypocrisy, political reform, and education. Although containing comical elements, Middlemarch is a work of realism that refers to many historical events: the 1832 Reform Act, the beginnings of the railways, the death of King George IV, and the succession of his brother, the Duke of Clarence (the future King William IV). In addition, the work incorporates contemporary medical science and examines the deeply reactionary mindset found within a settled community facing the prospect of unwelcome change. Eliot began writing the two pieces that would eventually form Middlemarch during the years 1869–70 and completed the novel in 1871. Although the first reviews were mixed, it is now widely regarded as her best work and one of the greatest novels in English.Middlemarch originates in two unfinished pieces that Eliot worked on during the years 1869 and 1870: the novel "Middlemarch"[a] (which focused on the character of Lydgate) and the long story "Miss Brooke" (which focused on the character of Dorothea). The former piece is first mentioned in her journal on 1 January 1869 as one of the tasks for the coming year. In August she began writing, but progress ceased in the following month amidst a lack of confidence about it and distraction caused by the illness of George Henry Lewes's son Thornie, who was dying of tuberculosis. (Eliot had been living with Lewes since 1854 as part of an open marriage.) Following Thornie's death on 19 October 1869, all work on the novel stopped; it is uncertain at this point whether or not Eliot intended to revive it at a later date. In December she writes of having begun another story, on a subject that she had considered "ever since I began to write fiction". By the end of the month she had written a hundred pages of this story and entitled it "Miss Brooke". Although a precise date is unknown, the process of incorporating material from "Middlemarch" into the story she had been working on was ongoing by March 1871. By May 1871, the growing length of the novel had become a concern to Eliot, as it threatened to exceed the three-volume format that was the norm in publishing. The issue was compounded by the fact that Eliot's most recent novel, Felix Holt (1866)—also set in the same pre-Reform Bill England—had not sold well.[9] The publisher John Blackwood, who had made a loss on acquiring the English rights to that novel,[8] was approached by Lewes in his role as Eliot's literary agent. He suggested that the novel be brought out in eight two-monthly parts, borrowing from the method of Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables. This was an alternative to the monthly issuing that had occurred for such longer works as David Copperfield and Vanity Fair, and it avoided the objections of Eliot herself to the cutting up of her novel into small parts. Blackwood agreed to the venture, though he acknowledged "there will be complaints of a want of the continuous interest in the story" due to the independence of each volume. The eight books duly appeared throughout 1872, the last three instalments being issued monthly.

Review "Broadview Press and editor Gregory Maertz have produced a text whose rich but judicious contextual annotation, notably highlighting Eliot's deep immersion in German culture, makes this a crucial edition of what is arguably the greatest Victorian novel of them all." (Michael McKeon )"Gregory Maertz's fine new edition of Middlemarch allows readers to consider the novel in relation to a range of documents—reviews and other writings by George Eliot, contemporary reviews of the novel, and contextual material. This additional material both enriches our reading of the novel and its concerns and expands our knowledge of the period." (Mark Turner )

Wonderful, compelling book By Shelby Miller I took up this book because it was on a booklist of the 100 best books written, and I have to agree. It took awhile to get into it because there's a great deal of expository writing at the beginning, but stick with it and you'll be introduced to some fascinating characters in the town of Middlemarch.Dorothea Brooke is a young woman about to take a much older husband, determined to find purpose in her life by assisting him with his life's work, a book which is to a definitive guide to all the mythologies of the world. When she begins to suspect her husband's work is little more than empty piffle, how will she find her way?Mr. Lydgate is a hotshot young physician determined to do great works from the small town of Middlemarch. Thwarted by small town suspicion and politics, and increasingly saddled by debt incurred by a pretty young wife, how will he cope as his life's dream slips away?Fred Vincy is the son of a town merchant determined to see him made a gentleman. He's paid for Fred to recieve a gentleman's education at Oxford with the intention that Fred will join the Church. Fred knows the Church isn't for him, but isn't sure what else to do, nor how to tell his father his education was for naught. These are just three of a huge cast of characters, all of them fascinating in their own way as their lives intersect. The book feels more like a documentary than a novel, and you grow to feel as if the characters could be your own friends and neighbors. Highly recommended, I know this is going to be one of my favorite books.

This is the greatest novel written in English By Joanna Daneman Yes, that is a strong statement, but I believe Middlemarch to be the best novel written in English. And English is a rich language, overflowing with worthy works from both sides of the Atlantic, India and beyond. The only novel as a close contender on my list is Jane Eyre, with its fearsome symmetry and romantic passion.George Eliot has been the bane of students everywhere who suffer reading Silas Marner in high school. But later on, you, like me, may develop a taste for the classics and this book will reward you richly. The story is about Dorothea, a young, idealist woman, born to a good family with a modest fortune of her own. She is a prime catch on the wife market--money, family name, good looks. Her parents are deceased and her friends and uncle seek to pair her up with a local baron as the ideal mate. But Dorothea, bookish, religious and dreamy, has other ideas. She chooses, instead, a superannuated cleric who finally decides to marry as he feels mortality and ill health upon him. Casaubon, the vicar of a nearby rural church is a good match except....he's old, ugly and what the heck is he doing marrying such a young beauty. But Dorothea, who's imagining a sort of superior father figure who could "teach you even Hebrew, if you wished it" wakes up to far less than a reality of marital bliss. And there's an added complication created by her unworthy husband that has dire consequences for the young Dorothea. The subsequent examination of marriage as a partnership in hell is written with stunning modernity. Eliot not only creates the disastrous marriage of Dorothea to Casaubon, but also pairs, as a comparison, Lydgate, a doctor and his frivolous, vain, uncaring wife. The relationship of marriage to society is never more well drawn, but the internal suffering of people trapped in loveless marriage is written with sympathy and cunning insight. Eliot herself had a live-in relationship with Henry Lewes, who could not divorce his wife. She undoubtedly wrote from personal experience. The insight into human nature, such as jealousy, disappointment, recrimination, loss of trust and a feeling of desperation are themes that anyone who has ever been in a relationship will recognize as truth. If you find classic literature hard going, watch the mini-series created based on the book. Then, knowing the general plot, you might enjoy the structure and language of the novel more.

It was so very thick, the print so small, the pages so thin! It looked dauntingly long and dull. But when I finally picked it up out of a sense of obligation (after all, I majored in English, and it is a highly acclaimed classic) I was amazed to find myself laughing out loud on the very first page!Dorothea, Eliot's heroine, is SO very earnest, SO idealistic and ardent! She would never be so tawdry as to fuss with her hair and dress, or wear (gasp!) jewelry in public! She is interested only in bettering the lives of the poor in their neighborhood (you could visualize her at the fore of a modern anti-war protest). But when her sister draws her into trying on their mother's old jewelry, the pure beauty of an emerald ring inspires her to decisively choose it as her own. And she stubbbornly ignores any inconsistency between that decision and her ideals. But her idealism traps her into marriage with a man who is not at all what she believes. She sees him as a paragon of learning, questing the seas of knowledge with fearless curiousity. In actuality, he turns out to be a cautious and small-minded scholar, drily obsessed with minor points of criticism on others works. Poor Dorothea strives to find ways to hold constant in her love in the face of ugly truth. And when she meets young Will Ladislaw, a man of similar idealism and energy, she fights to stay on her moral high ground. Thank goodness the dry old scholar dies! But even after death, he manages to poison the possibility of Dorothea and Will ever making a life together.Around this couple swarm their relatives and acquaintances, and others quests for their best lives. Each couple and each character is amusing and absorbing in their own way.Eliot's characters are introduced and drawn so very well that each personality is fully believable and real. But beyond that, Eliot looks at all of them, the best and the worst, from a viewpoint of loving and gentle amusement. Her pithy comments are hilarious, but never malicious. She draws the reader into her own frame of mind, and invites us to look at the variety of our fellow humans with compassion and laughter. In spite of its length, and several dizzy plunges into despair, this is a light and lively story, very readable and heartwarming.

I don't read much fiction, but I found the story fascinating and the pace kept me waiting to see what was around the next corner. The reading was leisurely and informative--I found the book relaxing to read. The character development and dialogue were intriguing and felt realistic. The book is wholesome and includes some Scripture; but delivers truth in a way that is refreshing and doesn't feel preachy. It has a great plot, and enough suspense to keep you turning pages; I had trouble putting it down. You'll enjoy getting to know the protagonist Caleb and watching as he experiences several hardships that propel him into becoming a man. Paul VanMeter is growing as a writer, and I'm sure that will only continue with each new book. I encourage you to pick up a copy, curl up somewhere warm, and enjoy a good story! If you're anything like me, you'll be glad you did.

Some was familiar and some was either brand new or a new way of thinking of a challenge, particularly the chapter about getting out of your horse's way. I loved what you had to say about honest intent versus actions you think you want. Spot on! It's also very nice to hear someone besides me talk about landing softly in a saddle when mounting. It sets the tone for your ride, in my opinion. Spot on again. There are many things I enjoyed and I wish you every success. Carmel, Ireland. I enjoyed the chapters. They were easy to read and digest. I've fixed my workstation at work and altered my driving position. I have also started channeling thoughts that don't need to be in my head! Breathing is always something I have strived to get right as I do stop breathing during times of pressure, Showjumping in particular! So it's good to have a refresher. Gemma, UK. The links offered in the book are super. For all dedicated riders the more info we can get the better knowledge we have. As a rider and horse owner everyday is a learning curve. I tried the breathing exercises as I was sat on the sofa reading this book. I felt good doing them. Michelle, UK.

By Jessie Marie On this adventure we get to follow Sack the cave spider on his journey to take down Scopi the scorpion leader. He was the spider in the first Biome War Scrolls that Domino had take a sleeping potion so he could steal the smoking box. And because Sack did this he must be punished with this journey. Will, Sack accomplish what he was set out to do? Find out by reading Minecraft: The Biome War Scrolls (An Unofficial Minecraft Series): The Weaving Webs of War: Vol 2.This book is recommended for grade levels 5-12, but I think it's great for anyone who loves playing Minecraft and enjoys reading. I know my son loves it and he is only in 2nd grade. He even explains all the stuff I read to him when I have no clue what it is I'm reading to him since he is a little young yet to read this book on his own. And I must say this author does an awesome job taking a video game and making awesome adventures for different characters out it.

Award-Winning Finalist in the Fiction: Historical category of the 2012 International Book Awards

When the Germans invade Belgium in 1940, chemistry professor André Sauverin fears the worst. His colleagues believe their social and political positions will protect them during the occupation, but André knows better. He has watched Hitler’s rise to power and knows the Nazis will do anything to destroy their enemies. For the Sauverins are Jews, non-practicing, yes, but that won’t matter to the Germans―or to the Belgians desperate to protect themselves by informing on their neighbors.

And so André and his brother Alex take their parents, wives, and children and flee south. But when France falls to the Nazis, the refugees are caught in a rural farming community where their only hope for survival is to blend in with the locals. Fortunately, the Sauverins have come to Huguenot country, settled by victims of religious persecution who risk their own lives to protect the Jewish refugees and defy the pro-Nazi government. And as the displaced family grows to love their new neighbors, André and Alex join forces with the French Resistance to help protect them.

Based on one family’s harrowing true story of survival, In This Hospitable Land is an inspirational novel about courage and the search for home in the midst of chaos.

Amazon.com Review A Q&A with Lynmar Brock, Jr. Question: Your novel, In This Hospitable Land, was inspired by the true story of a Belgian family who actually survived the Holocaust while living in the South of France. Tell us about this family and your discovery of their story.

Lynmar Brock, Jr.: Very simply I married one of the little girls. For my own family, we arrived in 1620 on the Mayflower and in 1682 with William Penn as he set up Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. Thus I had my family history down very well. But having married a girl from Belgium who arrived in the US in 1950 I was really interested in her family for my own sake and as much as for our two sons. I wanted them to know of their mother's story. That was really important to me. As an aside, our younger son has married a wonderful German girl (woman) and they have two children. And so I am trying to get her history, for now the "soup" thickens and after a couple of hundred years of mostly English/Scot/Irish ancestors (with a German g-g-g grandmother thrown in) the blood lines have been enhanced with all these new genes. Such a benefit. And to the point, as a young person (b. 1934) I did pay attention to the Second World War and knew much of what was going on. I remember specifically D-Day, the invasion of Normandy in 1944. In grade school we all knew what was going on. And so, getting married in 1963, Claudie and I sat down with her father and aunt and uncle and recorded five hours of conversation about the war years. For the first time they were willing to share that which they did not for the rest of the family or others.

Question: How much of the novel is fiction and how much fact? Was it difficult to use factual events in a fictional work?

Lynmar Brock, Jr.: Having gotten the family's story from them in 1969-70, then visiting France to be with the persons who made the survival of the family possible and gather their stories, I was able to assemble a pretty fair story line with dates in which I have some real confidence. And as new information came, I could test it against that which I already knew--the old method of getting two sources for one piece of information.

The events are real, enhanced by the history and printed by the participants following the war and for their own satisfaction. Also, my father-in-law printed several pamphlets at the university, including citing the 500 sheep missing and the fighting at La Riviere. The events are real. The one place where I am not sure that Andre was present was the incident of the killing at Les Puits de Celas. But that event was real. We have visited all the locations cited. It was easier to use factual events and then work on the dialogue. As I have said to others, I don't have their exact dialogue--it was never written down--but I had them say in the novel what I think they should have said. The dialogue is consistent with my knowledge of both the family and the many French who were there, who participated in the events and shared with me/us over a long period of time their feelings and emotions.

Question: You were in the U.S. Military before retiring to civilian life and becoming a businessman. How did your knowledge of military maneuvers influence your writing of this novel?

Lynmar Brock, Jr.: As a result of serving in the peacetime Navy, I know about military practices which I am sure were practiced by the Germans very effectively. Being in the U.S. Navy is not fun and games. It is a serious business. Being at the Pentagon in the office of the Chief of Naval Operations was a very serious business. I was recalled to active duty on our destroyer in 1961 when President Kennedy activated the reserve destroyers as a result of the raising of the Berlin Wall. It gave me a military perspective. And yes, I'm glad nobody was shooting at me during my service.

Question: Can we expect other historical fiction from you? What are you working on now?

Lynmar Brock, Jr.: Yes. I have written an historical novel, Must Thee Fight, the story of a Quaker youth who decided to join the military during the American Revolution against Quaker teachings and principles. I used the tension I faced when I had to decide whether to join the Navy or become a conscientious objector. I joined the military. And the true story is that only one of my Quaker ancestors joined Washington's army or militia. I have written a third novel, historical fiction, Genevieve, of a Navy officer in the Mediterranean Sea in the 1950s on a destroyer, meeting a beautiful French girl on vacation and the interaction between the two and the activity on a ship and the consequences of the relationship. I am now working on a sequel to Must Thee Fight.

Learning how this family survived kept me turning the pages By Debra Brinkman I chose this book because my high school son is about to be studying World War II, and I am always interested in real stories about that time period, particularly from a European point of view. What I wasn't expecting -- because I didn't read the description closely enough -- was a nearly 600 page book. I don't know this will work for him simply because of the length. But it will help me to give him some different perspectives as we discuss his studies. This book traces the Sauverin family from Belgium in 1940, into France during the war, and back to Belgium in 1944. The story was compelling, fascinating -- and a bit confusing too. Part of it is getting confused as to who is who among some of the minor characters. For example, near the middle of the book, there were two character -- Pierre and Pierrot -- who seemed to appear a bit out of nowhere, and I had a really difficult time keeping track of who was who. Fortunately, they were only part of the story for a brief time, so it didn't really matter that I couldn't figure them out.It helped tremendously, I thought, to know a bit about the story before reading it. In the Preface, the author explains how he came to write this book, how he and his wife went and visited the areas where her family had lived. They spoke with people who had known them, and Brock was able to weave their stories into this book as well. The last sentence of the preface was a key for me: "This, then, is the story of one family surviving the cataclysmic events of the Second World War." Learning how they survived kept me turning the pages.

This is a novel with a very strong plot that carries writing that is not the strongest. My biggest criticism is that there are some wonderful flowery philosophical soliloquies that just do not ring true as something that would be spoken aloud by the characters. That is meager criticism that does not minimize the book to any appreciable degree.Criticism out of the way, this is a compelling story (based upon the real life experience of the author's in-laws) of Belgian refugees who flee Brussels one step ahead of the Nazi invasion. They stay one step ahead of the Nazis through France into the heart of French Huguenot country where they are sheltered and protected. There are two families comprised of brothers who married sisters and the boys parents and their very young children. The brothers and sisters are well-drawn characters with depth, particularly Andre (a former professor) and his wife Denise. The supporting cast are good. Mr. Brock does a fine job of giving all the minor characters enough personality that none are cutout stereotypes. The tension starts from the outset as Brussels is bombed and the family trek is chronicled. Once they settled for a bit they are on the run again until they are separated in the most remote parts of France. As they get settled, Andre and his brother Alex join the efforts of the resistance, bringing a different type of tension to the novel.Along with a compelling narrative, the book explores the family dynamics. Most interestingly, these are non-practicing Jews who are, of course, special targets of the Nazis and their Vichy compatriots. This makes the efforts of the Huguenots even more impressive. An undercut that further adds to the book is Andre's search for a religion that fits his pacificism. This pacifist streak also affects him as he joins the resistance. The family theme and the dabbling into religious searching add depth and changes of pace from a compelling refugees turn activist story line. This book is highly recommended as a darn good story with interesting underlying themes.

Interesting, but plodding By Smokey Lynmar Brock Jr.'s "In This Hospitable Land" begins in Brussels, Belgium on May 10, 1940 and ends in Brussels on October 9, 1944. It is a fictionalized account of the experiences of Brock's wife's family during World War II.André and Alex Sauverin are brothers, who married sisters. Their wives, Denise and Geneviéve, come from a wealthy background. Both families are non-practicing Jews, have two young children and live comfortable lives in nice apartments in Brussels where André is a chemistry professor and Alex an expert philatelist. Everything changes when the Germans attack Brussels on May 10, 1940. Fortunately, the Sauverins have planned for this eventuality and are more prepared than many other Belgians to deal with the war.Leaving Belgium, they eventually arrive in the Cévennes in southwest France, an agricultural area consisting of rugged farm land and of small, and frequently overlooked, towns. There the Cévenols, people descended from Protestant Huguenots, help them, hide them, and teach them how to survive. Brock details the drastic changes in the Sauverins' existence: going without "modern" conveniences; sharing small, crowded living spaces; working in fields instead of at desks or in labs; going without a plenty of good food and clothing; being unable to communicate regularly with friends and relatives. Gradually, for safety, family members are eventually forced to separate. Alex and André occasionally work with the French Resistance. One of the most compelling themes of the book is pacifist André's struggle to reconcile his believe in non-violence with what seems must be done to protect innocent people, including his family.Although the threat of capture by the Nazis and betrayal by co-conspirators is present throughout the novel, the immediacy and the emotion of many books written about civilians in World War II is missing. Some instances in the book are made more chilling by the matter-of-fact, understated, writing style -- particularly some of Resistance scenes -- but in many cases the impact of what happens to the characters is lost in a "non-fiction" style. Details of everyday life move from being interesting reading to being dreary reading. As Brock writes in his preface: "Not every story of the Second World War involves incarceration and death. Many are the sorrowful tales of successful lives abandoned, new identities assumed, and the desperate struggle to survive in alien surroundings." The book might have succeeded better if it were written as a non-fiction memoir or a straight non-fictional account. It might succeed better at drawing readers into the "desperate" struggle to survive if some of the day-to-day sections were shortened or eliminated, more depth was given to the feelings and thoughts of the characters, and the book, as a whole, read more like a novel.
