I really liked the chapters of nutrition and pregnancy handling.Cons: I would like to see in the next edition a more detailed grooming chapter.I've acquired the book during the free offer. I've acquired the book after an email I received from the Scottish Fold Love Newsletter. First I skimmed through and spotted some interesting chapters. The author made it easy to skim through, it has lot's of titles and subtitles and a detailed table of contents. Since the book is not very big, In the end I've read it all.I absolutely love this breed and even though I don't own a Scottish fold cat I am thinking of adopting one. The book was of great help clarifying a few things in my mind. The book is NOT a Scottish fold advertisement and presents both the good and the bad aspects of the breed, which is something i really liked. I don't know if I want a Scottish fold yet since I don't know if I can provide the care a Scottish fold needs throughout its lifespan (according to the book).I believe that this book is a must read if you want a Scottish Fold. You will learn the ins and outs of the breed before you make the final decision and get one for yourself. You will also find information on how to spot good breeders and good kittens.I highly suggest the book for people not familiar with the breed who want to buy a Scottish fold cat.

Scottish fold owners will learn how to avoid very bad situation that can be result of restraining, bad breeder selection and/or bad nutrition practices.Cons: I would like a more detailed description of the Scottish fold cat, but that’s ok actually since you can find that at the breed profile of TICA if you want.I’ve acquired the book after an email I received for the free period of Scottish fold Cat book. It was a fast read (3 hours for me). I am totally satisfied and i believe the author covers everything, the beginners and experts, since he presents basic cat care concepts combined with the peculiarities of the Scottish fold.I got this book during my search to buy a Scottish fold and really helped me locate a reputable breeder. Thanks to the book I also believe i have a good grasp of the fundamentals of cat care and grooming. Only bad is that for some chapters, if you want to go deeper, you have to read the extra stuff provided in the end (usually articles around the net). Anyway…I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to buy or owns a Scottish fold cat.

It saved me from much trouble since before the book i was doing many mistakes in terms of training and feeding. Thank god my scottish folds are still kittens and i can correct my mistakes.Good book, must read for Scottish fold owners!

About the Author

Ana Montiel is a London-based, Spanish visual artist and designer. Her work enhances a universe of materials and media that range from screen printing to ceramics, through surface design, videoart and collage. Her influences are as diverse as David Lynch and his holistic approach to creativity, Jung's Red Book, the Arts & Crafts movements, Quantum Physics, Astrology, Yoga or Ayurveda.

Through Ana's latest art project "Visual Mantras" (ongoing) she has explored repetitive drawing as a meditation itself and has developed a series of absorbing and richly coloured geometries that bring up the cyclical rhythm of life. Ana also works as an illustrator, art director and designer and has collaborated with brands such as Nina Ricci, Jo Malone, Carolina Herrera and Anthropologie.

Her art work has been exhibited in Europe and North America.

My New Year's resolution is to paint again. (It's pretty much been since college...over 20 years ago). I have done 3 but this book really will stretch my techniques-mostly backgrounds and patterns that will be a great start to details. The one I am most excited about is the tutorial on how to make a repeat all over pattern. This book jumps right into the exercises and doesn't cover brushes and types of paints etc. it is really about guided experimentation and different ways to create patterns and a few images. The photo is of my version of the gradient wash technique featured in the book.

Although it does not list every motorcycle it does list those that are the most common. The market appears to be running a little hotter in 2016 by about 10%.

Very handy for reference By Dixie Lee I haven't had a growing season to trial the Author's suggestions for companion planting, however I plan to use this system while planting this season's garden. I have read other short essays on companion planting bit have not been able to garner the one logical bit of information I gathered reading this book. The companion plantings must be planted in a mixed culture. Yes, I'm being rather vague. You need to read the book to get the details. So simple yet I've continually missed the critical point for several years. Clear away the old thinking and garden smarter.I liked the straightforward way the author writes. Down to earth and easy to understand. Thanks for sharing your theories. Hope they work. I'm pretty confident they will.

The idea of plants complementing each other when planted side by side is interesting while very practical as they can help each other grow together. As a beginner, I liked the information on the basic herbs and vegetable pairs to plant in my garden. Some of them are even insect/pest repellents. It also teaches how to start an effective water system and how to deal with weeds and common crop problems. The book is easy to read and comprehensive. I appreciate this form in books I buy.

I am pretty new to the gardening hobby and had not heard this concept before picking up the hobby. It makes so much sense and produces such a better garden if you plan it out correctly before planting. Knowing how to keep out the bad pests, while at the same time attracting insects that help your garden will give you such great results. You will be glad you understand the concept of companion gardening by the time it comes to harvest.Do yourself and your garden a favor by learning about this method.

After going through the book, I feel more confident in being able to garden. I wouldn't go into this blindly. I'd look at all angles if you really want to get good quality produce. Some might just buy seeds at the nearby gardening store and just water, but there are some factors to consider, and I do encourage anyone looking at this review to just simply get the book. Its pretty beneficial.

History through fiction By The Deputy if you're like me and enjoy learning about history through the eyes of fiction, this book is an interesting and enjoyable read. Written after the outbreak of WWI, it covers what people knew about how the war started, but then plays on the suspicions and xenophobia of people towards others. A bit simplistic, but a good read that likely struck a responsive chord at the time. Read in that context.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Spys Romance By Lee Armstrong In the Little, Brown & Co. 1915 edition of E. Phillips Oppenheim's "The Double Traitor," over 40 other titles are referenced among the author's publications. The book sold for $1.35. The tale reads well 97 years later with characters clearly drawn and an interesting plot with twists and turns. Our hero is Francis Norgate who is an English gentleman assigned to the diplomatic corps in Berlin. The novel takes place in the years before the outbreak of WWI. Norgate dines with the lovely Baroness von Haase as a boorish German prince interrupts and demands that Norgate leave. In typical English style, Norgate stands up for the lady who then leaves with him. This causes such a diplomatic scandal that Norgate is recalled to London and booted from the diplomatic corps. On the train home, he meets Selingman who appears to be a German crockery merchant. Norgate soon learns that Selingman is a German spy who heads a large network of intelligence in Britain. The radical British government in power has put great money into social programs and cut defense, meanwhile Germany continues to arm itself. Norgate goes to Mr. Hebblethwaite, the one cabinet minister he knows, and tries to warn him of the spy network and his worries of war. Hebblethwaite doesn't take Norgate seriously. Soon Norgate allows himself to be recruited as a German spy so that he can learn more about their operation. The plot continues forth with many pre-WWWI countries and politics cited as a backdrop. Oppenheim does a good job of telling the story and making you want to get to the next chapter, that the book flies by. Perhaps a bit dated in the way that Baroness von Hasse marries Norgate and then claims that he is her protector, it nevertheless is sweetly flavored by their sedate romance. I enjoyed this novel and would like to read more by this author who was so popular a century ago. Enjoy!

It presents a fascinating picture of the political mindset of the day to go along with the twists and turns of the story. It was a gentler time (at least in fiction), and the prose and characters have an elegance rarely found in more modern fiction.E Phillips Oppenheim was a prolific author, and I have enjoyed many of his novels. Another excellent book from WWI era is The Great Impersonation. Most often, Oppenheim books must be found in the dusty recesses of used book stores (or bibliofind or abebooks one the net), so it is nice to see a new printing available.

The novel was unfinished at the time of Dickens's death (9 June 1870) and his ending for it is unknown. Though the novel is named after the character Edwin Drood, the story focuses on Drood's uncle, precentor, choirmaster and opium addict, John Jasper, who is in love with his pupil, Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, Drood's fiancée, has also caught the eye of the high-spirited and hot-tempered Neville Landless, who comes from Ceylon with his twin sister, Helena. Landless and Drood take an instant dislike to one another. Drood later disappears under mysterious circumstances. The story is set in Cloisterham, a lightly disguised Rochester. Mr Crisparkle, for example, lives in a clergy house in Minor Canon Corner, which corresponds to a genuine address within the precincts of Rochester Cathedral, namely Minor Canon Row.The novel begins as John Jasper leaves a London opium den.[4] The next evening, Edwin Drood visits Jasper, who is the choirmaster at Cloisterham Cathedral. Edwin confides that he has misgivings about his betrothal to Rosa Bud. The next day, Edwin visits Rosa at the Nuns' House, the boarding school where she lives. They quarrel good-naturedly, which they apparently do frequently during his visits. Meanwhile, Jasper, having an interest in the cathedral crypt, seeks the company of Durdles, a man who knows more about the crypt than anyone else.

65 of 66 people found the following review helpful. The Game Is Afoot, But We'll Never Know the Outcome By James Paris It is so strange to see a long, well-plotted novel suddenly come to a dead stop. (Of a projected twelve episodes, Dickens wrote six before his death.) The title character is either murdered or missing, and a large cast of characters in London and Cloisterham (Dickens's Rochester) are involved in their own way in discovering what happened to Edwin Drood. There is first of all John Jasper, an opium addict who suspiciously loves Drood's ex-fiancee; there is a nameless old woman who dealt him the opium who is trying to nail Jasper; there is a suspicious pile of quicklime Jasper notices during a late night stroll through the cathedral precincts; there is Durdles who knows all the secrets of the Cathedral of Cloisterham's underground burial chambers; there is the "deputy," a boy in the pay of several characters who has seen all the comings and goings; there are the Anglo-Indian Landless twins, one of whom developed a suspicious loathing for Drood; there is the lovely Rosebud, unwilling target of every man's affections; and we haven't even begun talking about Canon Crisparkle, Datchery, Tartar, and a host of other characters. All we know is that the game is afoot, but we'll never know the outcome. It would have been nice to know how Dickens tied together all these threads, but we can still enjoy THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD because -- wherever Dickens was heading with it -- it is very evidently the equal of his best works. Life is fleeting, and not all masterpieces are finished.

Drood Is So Good By IRA Ross It is a tribute to Charles Dickens' reputation that to this day this unfinished novel, a mystery no less, still garners such speculation as to who allegedly murdered Edwin Drood. There are organizations created for the sole purpose of analyzing the novel and to theorizing whom the culprit may have been, if indeed there really was a culprit. After all, only Drood's watch and his shirt pin are produced, not his body.As in all of Dickens' novels, the characterizations are the thing. You have the innocent young woman with the somewhat eccentric guardian and his Bob Cratchitlike assistant. There is the dark, possibly unfairly accused, but hot headed antagonist of Drood. Then there is Drood's brooding choirmaster uncle, John Jasper, who frequents opium dens, and who may or may not have ulterior motives in his seeking revenge. Durdles, the stone mason, and a somewhat weird character, provides some chilling comic relief in cemetery scenes with his stone throwing assistant. There are also the typical Dickensian characters, which includes a snooty older woman, a class conscious, spinsterish school mistress, and in a hilarious restaurant scene, an unappreciated, hard working "flying waiter" and a lazy, wise acre "stationary waiter."It is a shame that Dickens died before he could complete "Edwin Drood." What is here are the beginnings of an exploration of man's dual nature, a journey into "the heart of darkness" so to speak.

By Mary Whipple Set in Cloisterham, a cathedral town, Dickens's final novel, unfinished, introduces two elements unusual for Dickens--opium-eating and the church. In the opening scene, John Jasper, music teacher and soloist in the cathedral choir, awakens from an opium trance in a flat with two other semi-conscious men and their supplier, an old woman named Puffer, and then hurries off to daily vespers.Jasper, aged twenty-six, is the uncle and guardian of Edwin Drood, only a few years younger. Drood has been the fiancé of Rosa Bud for most of his life, an arrangement made by his and Rosa's deceased fathers to honor their friendship, and the wedding is expected within the year. Jasper, Rosa's music teacher, is secretly in love with her, though she finds him repellent.When two orphans, Helena and Neville Landless, arrive in Cloisterham, Helena and Rosa become friends, and Neville finds himself strongly attracted to the lovely Rosa. Ultimately, the hot-tempered Neville and Drood have a terrible argument in which Neville threatens Drood before leaving town on a walking trip. Drood vanishes the same day. Apprehended on his trip, Neville is questioned about Drood's disappearance, and Jasper accuses him of murder.Tightly organized to this point, the novel shows Jasper himself to be a prime suspect, someone who could have engineered the evidence against Neville, but Dickens unexpectedly introduces some new characters at this point--the mysterious Dick Datchery and Tartar, an old friend of Rev. Mr. Crisparkle, minor canon at the cathedral. Puffer, the opium woman, is reintroduced and appears set to play a greater role, since she solicits information from the semi-conscious Jasper and secretly follows him. This is the halfway point in the projected novel, and Dickens clearly planned to develop these new (or reintroduced) characters to deepen the mystery.More modern in many ways than his previous novels, the characters here are not simple stereotypes--some are good people who have real flaws and make mistakes. Dickens's tying of Jasper to the church choir, where he was a soloist, suggests some examination of the theme of hypocrisy, in which the good Mr. Crisparkle would be Jasper's antithesis. The opium scenes, vividly drawn, carry the unusual suggestion that opium leads to a kind of intoxication similar to that of alcohol, and Dicken does not use these scenes to offer dire warnings about the drug--at least at this point. Especially intriguing because it is unfinished, this novel continues to fascinate mystery lovers and literary scholars more than a century after its first publication. 18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Nate Heller Returns By David W. Nicholas Nate Heller novels are always fun. When I reviewed the last one I had read, I made the observation that you must accept one big whopper: that a single detective could do everything he does, in all of the various historical cases the author gets him involved in. If you can live with that, then you'll thoroughly enjoy the books, as I do.In this installment, it's early in Heller's career, and he's still a Chicago cop. He's finishing up the first part of his involvement in the Lindberg kidnapping when Clarence Darrow calls. Heller knows Darrow because Heller's father owned a radical bookstore some years before, and Darrow was a customer. Darrow wants an investigator to accompany him to Hawaii, and help him with the defense of a quartet of accused murderers, who apparently killed a man accused of rape. The accused include the rape victim's husband and her mother. The kicker is that all of the accused rapists were Asian or Polynesian of some sort, and the rape victim, and all of those accused in the killing, are white. Racial tensions are running high when Heller and Darrow arrive in the islands.The story is typical Collins, and a rather good example of what he does. The mystery is well-presented, and interesting. The author knows the characters, and the issues, involved in the real-life crime that he portrays. Most people think that Hawaiians are easy-going types, and many are, but there is also a considerable amount of anger about past discrimination on the island, percieved or real. This book does a good job of portraying that.The other thing Collins always does is cameo appearances by celebrities. In addition to Darrow, and the defendants in the case, Heller runs into a young Buster Crabbe and a much older Chang Apana. The latter was a well-known Honolulu police detective who was the basis for Earl Der Biggers' character Charlie Chan. Amusingly, Detective Apana repeats some of Charlie Chan's quotes from the movies, with tongue firmly in cheek.I really enjoyed this book. I think most others who are interested in history, and in detective novels, would enjoy it also.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Outstanding as usual By A Customer Max Allan Collins is one of my favorite writers. His books which employ the character Nate Heller are some of the best mystery novels ever written. Nate is always placed in the middle of a true-life incident, sometimes historically significant, sometimes not. In this case, the incident was not particularly historically significant, if not for the appearance of an aging Clarence Darrow. As always, this Heller book informs regarding the incident and truly entertains. I have read dozens of mystery series. Nate Heller ranks right up there with Travis McGee and Elvis Cole as one of my favorite detectives. Perhaps Heller is the most developed and interesting of the bunch.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful read By pv1940 I've read a lot of the Nate Heller series. They are always interesting and one learns a lot about famous cases of the past. Lots of history, always a good story and Nate is the ultimate old fashioned tough talking PI. This story was great - combined a good crime case, good courtroom drama and Clarence Darrow thrown in. I'd recommend these books to anyone who likes a good detective story.
