A book of essays by award-winning author and journalist David W. Berner is the next best thing to storytelling around a bonfire. In "There’s a Hamster in the Dashboard," Berner shares stories of “a life in pets”—from a collie that herds Berner home when the author goes “streaking” through the neighborhood as a two-year-old, to a father crying in front of his son for the only time in his life while burying the family dog on the Fourth of July. And from the ant farm that seems like a great learning experience (until the ants learn how to escape), to the hamster that sets out on its own road trip (but only gets as far as the dashboard). Along the way, Berner shows that pets not only connect us with the animal world, but also with each other and with ourselves. The result is a collection of essays that is insightful and humorous, entertaining and touching.

There's a Hamster in the Dashboard: A Life in Pets, by David W. Berner Review A Chicago Book Review "Best Books of 2015: Nonfiction" selection."Honorable Mention" in the Chicago Writers Association 2015 Book of the Year Awards."Each of these stories serves as a brief vignette that illuminates evolution from boy to teen to adult, from child to father, each instance serving as a lesson about life. All of the stories are thoughtful, going well beyond the ins and outs and highs and lows of pet ownership to consider what our experiences with pets teach us. Full of emotions that linger, the book makes us think not just about the author and his life with pets, but of ourselves and of our own lives with the pets in them and of the deep value and lasting lessons these beautiful, wonderful, loving creatures share with us." Kelli Christiansen, Chicago Book Review"Berner's book is meant to be read and re-read. For an animal person, this is a return to childhood and growing up with companions that truly mattered along the way." Gerry Souter, Windy City Reviews"Berner understands that our relationship to our pets and to the world around us defines who we are as humans." Robert Louis Henry, Leaf Garden Press"One man's memory lane of life with animals, in which he learns as much about his parents, himself, and his parenting as he does about his pets." Anne Veague, Waterline Writers"Berner's powerful prose flows with rich imagery." JW Smith, Editor, Epiphany"Berner's writing captures the raw and real essence of what it is to be human." Larry Richert, KDKA Radio"Words flow so beautifully, clearly drawing complicated images of our lives." Shari L. Schmidt, OMB (Oh My Books)

Berner sent me chapter 1 of “There’s a Hamster in the Dashboard” for possible inclusion in a magazine I publish, I had no idea it was an excerpt from a book. Nor was I familiar with David or his body of work, his awards and his impressive credentials. All I knew as I read his submission was I loved his conversational tone, his warmth and friendliness, and the admiration he had for his favorite kind of pet: dogs.So it was a real treat to later learn that this segment was only the beginning of a delightful book, not just about dogs, but a whole slew of pets that David had as a child, and later enjoyed with his own two sons. As a youngster, David, who liked to keep his pets’ names simple ie. Ralph, Tom, begged to keep a tarantula which terrified his mother but impressed the heck out of his male classmates. Another time, he found and nursed a baby squirrel, Nicky, back to health. When Nicky was well enough and stole away to her natural habitat during the night, little David felt his heart break. But with that heart break came the realization that we will love and lose things as we grow but our parents are still there for us.And those kinds of epiphonies are how David Berner ends most of these vignettes: each encounter with his pets teaches the growing child something, not just about the animals which fascinate him, but about himself. As David shares his stories of dogs, a cat named “Mouse”, pet ants, mating gerbils, an angelfish, and more dogs, David grows into a loving, caring father who enjoys teaching his own children about life through having pets. And the readers remember and recognize themselves in so much of what David experiences.“Theres a Hamster in the Dashboard” is a wonderful blend of humor and pathos, told in simple, unpretentious language. David’s recollection of the time his sons wanted a lizard was just too funny, and too sad. Seems what they got wasn’t a lizard but an anole…I had to look it up too. But this anole’s diet consisted of crickets ie.. you fed him one or two every few days. When the novelty of having the anole wore off and going to the pet shop every couple of days to purchase crickets became annoying, David dumped a whole pile of crickets into the tank with the anole. What David didn’t know, and never told his sons, was crickets feed on anoles. By the time realization set in, the poor anole was half eaten and quite dead. Like so much in life, funny but sad too. Experience can be a tough teacher.Of course, if like David and me, your favorite pet is a dog, the last chapter will tug at your heart strings and remind you why “man’s best friend” is man’s best friend. This is the kind of book that makes the perfect gift for anyone who is fascinated by, and has a respect for animals and the wonder of their ways. David W. Berner captures all of that beautifully in “There’s a Hamster in the Dashboard.”And now, you’ll excuse me while I toddle off to enjoy yet another of David’s wonderful books. He’s made me a true fan of his writing.

A Thoughtful and Touching Collection By Veritas Vincit I haven't owned a pet in many years, but I remember my childhood pets vividly, and this book celebrates those experiences in such a wonderful way. There truly is so much that we can learn from animals, and they impact our lives in myriad indescribable ways. They can teach us about so much more than responsibility...dogs, cats, ants, rabbits, lizards, hermit crabs and every other type of pet can inspire affection, gentleness, patience, empathy, and devotion to protecting and serving life. I think that these stories capture that message, revealing the morals behind those anecdotal stories you will always remember - from the time the dog ate the corner of the couch to the first time your cat ran away. These stories brought me back in time, a feat that is difficult to accomplish, and I had a hell of a fun time reflecting and reminiscing as I made my way through these touching, hilarious, and unique (yet universal?) tales. Thanks, Mr. Berner...this was a real treat for the memory.

I wasn't sure what to expect by reading the title of this book, however I was so pleasantly surprised. This book took me back through my childhood and all of the pets that I kept, some which were known to the family and others which secretly lived in the garage. Each story in this book of shorts had such an endearing quality. The stories did bring me right back to my childhood.David W. Berner was one of those extremely lucky kids whose parents also loved animals. He recalls his experiences with squirrels, dogs, cats, and a spider just to name a few. I was able to totally relate to the gerbil experience. I really enjoyed reading this book and it brought me back 30 years to reflect on what wonderful pets I had growing up too. A must read for any animal lover.
