Getting a dog from a shelter or Animal Control facility can be a crap shoot but, the rewards of taking that leap of faith and changing one dog's life may even change yours. Don't go it alone, make a plan, and get a head start with this book to help you be successful with your rescue.I'm the owner of Levi featured in chapter 9, "Aggression". I've rescued many dogs in the past 40 plus years, some I've kept, some I've fixed then re-shaped. Some of the best dogs I've owned have been other peoples throw aways. But, if you want to rescue a loving dog and give him/her another chance at life this book is a must. I promise you this, "when you save a dog, he'll save you right back."

Anna Katharine Green (November 11, 1846 – April 11, 1935) was an American poet and novelist. She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories. Green has been called ”the mother of the detective novel.” Green is credited with shaping detective fiction into its classic form, and developing the series detective. Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and other creations. She also invented the ‘girl detective’: in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green ”stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful ”whodunits.” In addition to creating elderly spinster and young female sleuths, Green’s innovative plot devices included dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as ”clews,” the coroner’s inquest, and expert witnesses. Yale Law School once used her books to demonstrate how damaging it can be to rely on circumstantial evidence. Written in 1878, her first book, The Leavenworth Case: A Lawyer’s Story, sparked a debate in the Pennsylvania Senate over whether the book could ”really have been written by a woman.” Green was in some ways a progressive woman for her time—succeeding in a genre dominated by male writers—but she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and she was opposed to women’s suffrage.

About the Author Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. Her other works include A Strange Disappearance (1880), The Affair Next Door (1897), The Circular Study (1902), The Filigree Ball (1903), The Millionaire Baby (1905), The House in the Mist (1905), The Woman in the Alcove (1906), The House of the Whispering Pines (1910), Initials Only (1912), and The Mystery of the Hasty Arrow (1917).

By Patto If you appreciate secret passageways, menacing messages in mysterious cipher, hidden treasures, floor boards that creak in the night, cranky old butlers, crazy old ladies, and beautiful heroines tormented by nameless fears - you should enjoy this mystery as much as I did.Young Miss Saunders desperately needs work, so she accepts a peculiar job as temporary companion to the mayor's wife, a once serenely happy woman who has suddenly become nervous and depressed. The mayor is campaigning and can't be home with her. Basically he needs a kind-hearted and resourceful spy to unravel the mystery and restore his wife's happiness. A tall order, but Miss Saunders is not lacking in wit, heart or courage.It quickly becomes apparent that the mayor and his beautiful wife, who love each other dearly, have rented a haunted house. For some years no tenant has stayed there longer than a month. Miss Saunders, of course is too sensible to believe in ghosts. She intends to find the natural cause behind the supernatural manifestations that the house offers up quite regularly.This may not be the greatest of Green's novels, but it's well stocked with colorful characters, and the reader and Miss Saunders get to grapple with multiple mysteries.Anna Katharine Green was a shy, introverted, Victorian-style woman with a wonderful talent for creating fearless, no-nonsense women investigators. Her plots were so ingenious that some contemporary critics thought she must be a man writing under a female pseudonym. Although her works are not much in the public eye these days, they influenced both Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. I personally think Green deserves a revival, and I'm on a project to read all her novels.

She was born inNew York City in 1846, the daughter of a criminal attorney.She had to have attended many of her father's trials in court;she is a fantastic writer. I never thought I would find a writerthat is right up there with Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie,Wilkie Collins(strong reminder) and John Dickson Carr. I havejust finished, "The Mayor's Wife" published in 1907(!) and almostread straight through 387 pages. Also have read, "That AffairNext Door" and "Lost Man's Lane" (this one especially intrigingas in a smalll village on one particular short lane, peoplehave been disappearing and no one knows where to as there areonly like 4-5 houses on the lane. Miss Butterworth, a verymuch "Miss Marple" lives in NYC and a retired policeman asksher to help him with this case and as she has been planning tovisit a deceased college mate's children who just happen tolive on that lane, she is in for one mystifying experience.I,m sure if I manage to read all of Green's books still inprint, I will feel as I did with Holmes and Christie; wantingplease just a few more (and a few more, etc i,m sure!)

Things as simple as, lighting a fire to warming up your outdoor bed. The book talks about how you can keep up with hygiene while in the great outdoors and how to find food in the strangest places. The booklet takes off grid living to an extreme, the authors version of off grid living is more like wilderness camping. The picture of a house on the cover is misleading. If you are into extended wilderness camping the author does have some good ideas.

If all you have successfully grown is a chia pet, all of your garden tools are from the dollar store, and the only seed bank you have is what you have been scraping out of grocery store produce, you have a long way to go. Now, if you have met Mother Nature on her own terms and are well on your way toward self sufficiency, then The Bug Out Gardening Guide is a must have for your survival library. Written from real world experience, Mr. Foster's easy conversational style presents a wealth of information on the who, what, where, why, and how of survival gardening in a very readable and entertaining fashion. It is loaded with tips, techniques, ideas, and practical hacks. Fertilizer belongs in gardens, not books. Mr. Foster provides several good recipes but no bovine excrement. Highly recommended for those who are serious about making it through tough times ahead.

There are time saving ideas, health saving ideas (like the clothespin on the front cover which is used to hold the nail so as to not crush one's thumb) and ideas to get the most out of life. Nothing here is overly complicated and nothing here requires anything outside everyday household items. Thus the hacks in the book are practical and useful.Life Hacks is a great bathroom book, a good coffee table book and would be an excellent book to place in waiting rooms. You will enjoy reading and probably take away at least a couple of hacks to make your life better.

By Jessica While there are a few good projects in here, like the Carryall Pincushion, most of the projects are pretty basic and I feel like I've seen similar things out there already. The book does have pretty pictures, but the one thing that annoys me more than anything else about this book is the TERRIBLE layout. All the project photographs are in the front and all the instructions are in the back with only titles and hand-sketched illustrations to remind you what you were making. I'm a visual person, and having to flip back and forth to see real pictures of what I want to make and then flip back to the instructions in the back is pretty frustrating for me. All in all, the book is okay.And if this is helpful for any: I consider myself a skilled/advanced intermediate level sewist. I've been sewing for over 20 years.

I've made 4, (wallet, clutch, pincushion, and traincase) of the 23 projects and love each one of them. The patterns are easy-to-follow. I would definitely recommend (and have) this book.

This book is filled with beautiful, functional projects including bags, pouches, a few garments, pillows, quilts, and other goods for the home. Anna's eye for design and details really shows through in these projects. The instructions are easy to follow with lovely hand drawn illustrations to guide you. I want to make nearly everything in this book, which doesn't happen often!

Worthless By bibliobob A poorly organized, awkwardly written compilation of superficial scribblings possibly culled from the internet by someone who doesn't know much about sewing. Much of it is obvious, some wrong, some just meaningless.Example, fabric selection (p 14):"Linen: a medium-weight cotton fabric....""Silk: a lightweight cotton fabric that is delicate....""Wool: a heavyweight cotton fabric that comes from sheep and is used for very warm clothing (ex: lining for winter coats; winter hats)"Skipping ahead to page 65:"Cotton webbing is a cotton/polyester/nylon blend material...."On selecting thread, Elizabeth recommends the kind that comes on a SPOOL (p 9). None of that boring detail you find in other books about polyester vs cotton, characteristics of different brands, size, matching to fabric and needle, or warning that cheap thread can damage your machine.Her advice on buying a sewing machine is superficial, generic, and useless, except for one point: ignore on-line reviews unless they're consistently negative. I'd pay attention to that one, because I'll bet Elizabeth knows a lot about fake reviews.The description of different stitches (p. 106) is unaccompanied by photos or illustrations. The first one, back stitch, is "stitch made in the opposite direction of your sewing - this issued to enforce your stitching."A running or straight stitch is "a basic stitch that passes in and out of the fabric." That's directly from Wikipedia, but Wikipedia included an illustration to clarify the meaning.For a wire headband, she recommends cutting the wire with scissors (that will ruin them) then wrapping it with either electrical or duct tape.How can that saintly woman shown on the product page produce something so awful? She may be fake too: Shutterstock image number 136418315, "thinking senior woman in front of white background." [Update 11/2015: the stock photo of "Elizabeth" has been removed from Amazon's product and author's page]Suggested alternative: Sewing Essentials (Singer Sewing Reference Library). Complete, authoritative, well-organized, easy to understand, competently edited, with loads of color pictures. It's out-of-print, but used hardcover editions are available from dozens of Amazon vendors for less than $5, including shipping.

I kind of skimmed over the parts that didn't mean anything to me, like buying a sewing machine. I already have a sewing machine (check pawn shops for the best deals!). I dislike the way "big box" stores are given in examples, when obviously, a fabric/sewing/craft store would be a better choice for beginners to learn that silk and wool are not cotton fabrics. I like that it includes projects but the directions for the projects are difficult to follow without pictures. The one that I was truly interested in making, I couldn't understand the directions.

Apparently the author was thinking of Jennifer Aniston in "Office Space" for that.Page 11, "Ironing board + iron: These can be helpful in pinning your seams and hems. You could also use these to unwrinkled your fabric... ...if you want." Grammar is not the author's forte. Neither is logic.This book appears to be a physical manifestation of a blog content mill. Avoid at all costs.
