After returning to the island following his lost week in Glasgow, Leger finds Hugh and Annabella preparing for a murder-mystery themed opening night, much to his delight. But, on learning that Annabella is to play the victim, he is not so keen. Once the lights go out, Annabella is found lying on the floor. All the humans assume it is part of the game but Leger and the other animals know the truth. She really was pushed from the stairs. It should have been an easy task for Leger as Amber witnessed the attack and was desperate to relate exactly what happened, but when he also assumed it was part of the act Amber disappeared with the island bad-boy, Massingham. Now he and Ginger must search for clues, as well as Amber, in order to unmask the person who pushed Annabella. With only a missing false nail and a lot of uneasy vibes to go on, this could be Leger's most puzzling case yet.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Leger's Fear By Janie Dills Leger has been returned to the small Scottish island after following Ginger to her home in Glasgow after her family's previous visit. Upon arrival, he learns that his beloved human, Annabelle, has planned a murder mystery night for their new hotel's opening. His gut feeling tells him that things could go terribly wrong, especially when he finds out that Annabelle will be the pretend victim. Since he has been returned by the family of Ginger, his favorite molly & mother to his kittens, Amber & August, she is there too as is Amber. As the night's festivities progress, Leger's worst fear is realized as Annabelle is found @ the bottom of the stairway after the power suddenly goes out & a crashing thud is heard from the direction of the stairs. At first everyone thinks it's a part of the show but soon after the truth emerges. Is Annabelle dead, seriously injured, what really happened? Lots of questions & Leger is quick to get to the bottom of this mystery. After all, it's his beloved Annabelle & he wasn't keeping a close enough eye out to protect her when he felt uneasy about the planned show. Another good read in this series of Leger's Hotel Mysteries!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Poor grammar, no pictures, bad recipes. By Amazon Customer Most "Recipes" are just vague suggestions.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This book is worthless By P. K. Smith There is nothing in this book that is new or even accurate. One recipe (sort of) was for apple soap and one of the ingredients suggested was apple essential oil. Yeah. There are much better soaping books, like most of them.

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful. and be in a better position to bargain with a dealer By Tom If you are considering selling any of your coin collection, the current edition of this book is invaluable. It lets you know what coins have value and what is the average price a dealer will pay for it. Also, for coins minted during the past 50 years, it lets you know what coin conditions dealers will be interested in buying (like MS-63 at a minimum). The 'red book' will give you more info on specific coins to look for that may have more value. Together, these books are what you need to evaluate the worth of your coins, and be in a better position to bargain with a dealer.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Bluebook 2016 By Dave A must for any one buying and selling coins, give you the medium prices of coins, above dealer costs and below retail prices.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. New 2016 Blue Book By D. T. Henderson I order the BLUE BOOK every year. The info in side helps with mintages, for all U S coins, mint marks, conditions of coins, and a guide as to how much yer coins MAY be sold for. Remember, this is a Guide only. A good book for any collector of U S Coins. Thanks....

First published serially in Gilman's magazine the Forerunner in 1909-10, the novel tells the story of Diantha Bell, a young woman who leaves her home and her fiancé to start a housecleaning business. A resourceful heroine, Diantha quickly expands her business into an enterprise that includes a maid service, cooked food delivery service, restaurant, and hotel. By assigning a cash value to women's "invisible" work, providing a means for the well-being and moral uplift of working girls, and releasing middle- and leisure-class women from the burden of conventional domestic chores, Diantha proves to her family and community the benefits of professionalized housekeeping.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to publications@publicdomain.org.uk This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via DMCA@publicdomain.org.uk

What Diantha Did, by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

Review “Charlotte J. Rich has brought to light the complex history of Gilman’s insistence that housework be professionalized. In this compelling edition, we see how Gilman addressed the ‘servant question’ in light of national anxieties about race and ethnicity, class mobility, and sexual harassment. Terrific for American studies courses, What Diantha Did demonstrates Gilman’s belief that middle-class women could be saved by the invention of ‘kitchenless houses’ and professional housekeeping.”—Dale Bauer, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign“Charlotte Perkins Gilman is an important figure in both literary and intellectual history, and it’s good to have this entertaining book back in print. It’s a fascinating example of the strengths and weaknesses of the lost tradition of ‘material feminism.’ Charlotte J. Rich frames the novel in its historical moment and makes it even more readable and valuable.”—June Howard, University of Michigan

About the Author Charlotte Perkins Gilman was an American sociologist, writer, lecturer, and social reformist. As a child, Gilman was often in the presence of her father s relatives, notably Isabella Beecher Hooker, a well-known suffragist, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, an abolitionist and author of Uncle Tom s Cabin. Many of Gilman s own works reflect similarly feminist and social reformist perspectives, and in 1909 she established The Forerunner, a magazine that acted as a forum for discussion of these issues. Gilman s most famous work is The Yellow Wallpaper, a semi-autobiographical short story written in response to being put on rest cure by a doctor to cure her depression. Gilman s works also include the poetry collection In This Our World, and the feminist texts Women and Economics and The Home: Its Work and Influence. She died in 1935.

It was more upbeat than most of the works we covered, but it was still frustrating at times. Diantha is a great character, but could use a little more fleshing out. The frustration comes from the other characters' resistance to her forward thinking (which is to be expected in almost any novel about women from this time period). Diantha wants to start her own business, but everyone else thinks that she is crazy. The book contains some charts with figures that aren't really relevant today, but would have been very informative during the time it was written. Gilman basically wanted to prove that what Diantha did in the novel was feasible for any clever, industrious woman.

By kaitlin jones a struggle between preconceived notions of masculinity and femininity, clearly illustrated in one woman's quest to aid the ones she loves as well as benefit all mankind. a truer love story could not be written. it was simultaneously encouraging, inspiring, and illuminating!

Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA, wrote this book in response to a dog nearly killing a 6'4" man and his German shepherd in her city. After that terrible incident, and a decade of working with frustrated dogs in urban centers, she spoke with professionals in related dog industries. She consulted with veterinarians, rescue volunteers, behavior specialists, certified dog trainers, dog daycare providers, groomers and more to identify why urban dogs are failing, and what we need to do to help these dogs succeed. The same issues -- and solutions -- came up again and again across the board. This book explains how to find the right dog for a city environment; identifies how to find a good care taker for your pet; defines "behaviorist"; explains how to get exercise for an athletic dog in a city of leash-laws; and pontificates on how to responsibly advocate for an urban dog. Most importantly, this book lays out how exactly to find reputable help for any possible issue, and holds your hand if things are not working as hoped. This is not a dog training book - there are thousands on the market already. Instead, this book will supplement any science-based training regimen. It gives insight as to why dogs do what they do, but perhaps more importantly, it explains why people do what they do and why we must do better for the sake of our urban dogs. We all need to do better – our urban dogs are in the balance.

Review "McCue McGrath's personal stories and the stories of her clients add an emotional layer to this book that take it beyond being a dry or boring textbook affair. The writing is inviting and touched with humor, even as it is packed with information. It is not only informed by personal experience, as the author has researched the topic thoroughly and included citations to the work of numerous other trainers, veterinarians, and scientists.Considerations for the City Dog is an enjoyable and informative read that belongs on the bookshelf of any dog owner, urban or otherwise."-Brian McGrath, Editor"We owe it to our dogs to read this resource-rich, highly informative handbook." - The Bark Magazine (Winter, 2015)"Considerations for the City Dog is not an owner's manual. It is not Rocco's story, nor McCue-McGrath's. It is a book full of insight useful to dog owners, potential dog owners, dog lovers, and any curious body in between." -Amy Swain, The Somerville TimesSomerville Author Considers The City Dog (10/9/2015)"But as she began learning the tricks of the trade, McCue-McGrath also started noticing that the problems faced by urban dog owners differed from those experienced by owners raising their pets in suburban or rural communities. For example: "The conventional advice for, say, a dog that's barking and demanding and, like, 'Pay attention to me!' is to ignore it," she explains. "But you can't do that if you have a landlord that lives upstairs. Or neighbors."-Emily Cassel, Scout SomervilleConsiderations for the City Dog Author Talks Raising Dogs in the 'Ville(9/10/15)

Additionally, Melissa writes alongside one of her best friends, Dr. Sip Siperstein, for NPR's Car Talk FIDO Blog. She rather infrequently updates her MuttStuff blog and Muttstuff Facebook Page. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is not just a book for and about the city dog. It is a book for any person who loves dogs. By Amazon Customer This book fills a major gap in the literature on dog training and dog behavior. It belongs on the "doggy bookshelf" alongside classics by Patricia McConnell, Pat Miller, and Turid Rugaas for dog owners who want to use a positive, non-aversive approach to working with their dogs. This book is a wonderful resource for owners of city dogs, but is also great for people who are trying to juggle a demanding job with a family and a dog who also need your attention. Melissa's book can help you deal with "reactivity" (aka, "my dog freaks out at stuff"); people with opinions ("welcome to Boston"), other pets in the house, too much energy from your dog or too little, or lots of other practical things. Because of Melissa's advice, I can now walk my dog without her fierce leash-pulling wreaking havoc on my back. I'd read many books on "polite leash walking" and tried every walking device out there. Melissa's explanation of the how and why of a "head collar" has meant that I can walk easily with my dog without her pulling and without resulting pain for me. My dog and I are both much happier! This book is full of wise and helpful advice even for the non-city dog--e.g., "ditch the dish" (so your dog can take longer than twenty seconds to eat), "socialization and body language," and finally, "goodbye."But this book is not just "how to fix this" and "how to deal with that." It's a sweet, funny (VERY funny) poignant story of a young woman learning about raising dogs, loving dogs, learning to train dogs, and learning how to let them go when their time comes. It is one of the sweetest "dog tales" I've ever read. Reading Melissa's book you'll feel that you've made a friend who will stand by you and your dog when things get weird out there in the world. This is not just a book for and about the city dog. It is a book for any person who loves dogs. Buy it for yourself. Give it to a friend. Do both.

By Karen in Cambridge I won this book at a raffle at my local pet store/doggie daycare, and boy am I glad that I did! I think it's a terrific book, and I've purchased a couple of copies to give to dog owners in our neighborhood.I've tried to keep herding dogs as pets in a moderately urban neighborhood, and it has been a real challenge. Melissa's book has been a huge help to know how to keep my dog safe and sane. Not all dogs are created equal, and dogs that are really bred to work livestock on a farm (Border Collies, Aussies, etc.) can have a really tough time in the city if their owners don't know what they're doing. It's well-written and very useful; I highly recommend it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Want a happy dog? Read this book! By Samantha Simonelli Melissa has been my go to trainer for many years and I have many patients who have benefited from her expertise. When I heard she was writing a book, I was so excited to have a helpful reference for my dog owning clients. Melissa did not disappoint. Her book is full of straight forward, no-nonsense advice to improve the lives of our dogs. It's interesting and funny and truthful. If you share your life with a canine companion or are considering adding one to your family, please read Considerations for the City Dog. And if you are in the Boston area, take a class with Melissa. Your dog will thank you for it.Samantha Simonelli, DVM

In 1935, when Erma Morton, a beautiful young woman with a teaching degree, is charged with the murder of her father in a remote Virginia mountain community, the case becomes a cause célèbre for the national press. Eager for a case to replace the Lindbergh trial in the public’s imagination, the journalists descend on the mountain county intent on infusing their stories with quaint local color: horse-drawn buggies, rundown shacks, children in threadbare clothes. They need tales of rural poverty to give their Depression-era readers people whom they can feel superior to. The untruth of these cultural stereotypes did not deter the big-city reporters, but a local journalist, Carl Jennings, fresh out of college and covering his first major story, reports what he sees: an ordinary town and a defendant who is probably guilty. This journey to a distant time and place summons up ghosts from the reporters’ pasts: Henry Jernigan’s sojourn in Japan that ended in tragedy, Shade Baker’s hardscrabble childhood on the Iowa prairie, and Rose Hanelon’s brittle sophistication, a shield for her hopeless love affair. While they spin their manufactured tales of squalor, Carl tries to discover the truth in the Morton trial with the help of his young cousin Nora, who has the Sight. But who will believe a local cub reporter whose stories contradict the nation’s star journalists? For the listener, the novel resonates with the present: an economic depression, a deadly flu epidemic, a world contending with the rise of political fanatics, and a media culture determined to turn news stories into soap operas for the diversion of the masses.

The Devil Amongst the Lawyers: A Ballad Novel (Ballad Series), by Sharyn McCrumb

From Publishers Weekly In 1935, the case of an Appalachian schoolteacher arrested for murdering her father becomes a national news story, seized on by the press for its sensationalism and the opportunity to mock the rural inhabitants involved. Competing with a brigade of city journalists is novice Tennessee newspaperman Carl Jenkins, whose obsession with the truth leads him to call in his cousin Nora, gifted with second sight—but what, exactly, can he report with no concrete evidence? The latest in McCrumb's Appalachian Ballad series (after 2003's Ghost Riders) is decidedly mixed; McCrumb's grasp of setting and character instantly immerses readers in the worlds of both the sympathetic locals and the cynical city press. Her plot, part mystery and part cautionary tale, is passable, but leaves nothing for readers to work out on their own. Dialogue, which stretches for authentic, often feels awkward and stilted; though fans will be familiar with the style, new readers will likely be frustrated. Review

Praise for The Devil Amongst the Lawyers:“The story begins with a train ride, a magic carpet that carries us back to the year 1935 and into the heart of a famous murder trial. As we head for the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, we get to know the characters, those journalists and photographers and sensation-seekers who always turn up for a good spectacle.

“Sharyn McCrumb re-creates this time and place with such precision, the reader forgets that seventy-five years have passed since that faraway event in that isolated place where the outer world clashes with superstition and folklore. This is storytelling as those Celtic bards meant it to be: lyrical, haunting, and truly unforgettable.” --Cathie Pelletier, author of The Funeral Makers and Running the Bulls

“Wow! Sharyn McCrumb is not just a writer---in fact, she’s a conjurer, a genius, a wordsmith, an entertainer, a wit, a scholar, a wise woman, and a storyteller of the first rank. The Devil Amongst the Lawyers is flat-out brilliant and transcendent, a book that gets everything exactly right. Simply put, novels don’t come any better than this.” --Martin Clark, author of The Legal Limit and The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living

“The Devil Amongst the Lawyers is a superb novel that, once started, is so well written and so expertly researched that readers will find it impossible to put down. It is also a scathing indictment of how Appalachia has been, and continues to be, stereotyped by a supposedly objective media. Bravo!” --Ron Rash, author of SerenaMore Praise for Sharyn McCrumb:“There are few writers today who are able to blend past and present, tradition and law, legends and headlines in a wholly credible fashion-- Tony Hillerman springs  inevitably to mind.  Sharyn McCrumb is another; her widely acclaimed Ballad Series is one of the finest being written today.” --Bookpage

“McCrumb provides fresh evidence that there is no one quite like her among present-day writers. No one better, either.” --San Diego Union-Tribune

“Ms. McCrumb writes with quiet fire and maybe a little mountain magic…She plucks the mysteries from people’s lives and works these dark narrative threads into Appalachian legends older than the hills. Like every true storyteller, she has the Sight.” --The New York Times Book Review

About the Author Sharyn McCrumb is the author of several bestselling novels, including The Rosewood Casket, She Walks These Hills, and The Ballad of Frankie Silver, which was nominated for a Southeast Booksellers Association award. She has received awards for Outstanding Contribution to Appalachian Literature and Southern Writer of the Year. Her books have been named notable books of the year by both The New York Times and Los Angeles Times. She lives in Virginia.

By MysteryPoodle I was so very excited to open this book -- the first new story in the Ballad series in ever so long. However, from the start, it is clear that this is not your usual Sharyn McCrumb novel. She has taken a true story, a murder in the Appalachian hill country of the Ballad novels, set in 1935. But rather than deal with the story, the why's and wherefore's, and, most of all, the marvelous cast that McCrumb usually brings to these stories, the story is told from the perspective of the reporters sent to cover the trial. On the one hand, three New York reporters and their photographer, do their best to ignore every detail that doesn't match their preconceived notion of how the back country ought to be, even to the extent of manufacturing scenes of waifs in shacks for their own convenience. On the other hand, an earnest young reporter from nearby Tennessee is on hand, actually trying to see the truth of the story, but it isn't pretty or appealing in any way and his reports aren't doing his fledgling career any good at all.Nora Bonesteel, the protagonist of many of the Ballad novels, makes a rather brief appearance as a 12 year old girl, and then in the epilogue as an elderly woman remembering the events for a young law researcher. Frankly, the epilogue was my favorite chapter of the book. It *felt* right -- it was compelling and it went somewhere. The majority of the book felt like a real chore, and I have to think that it was for the writer. I think McCrumb set out to tell a particular story in a particular way and kept on even when it didn't work for her. I'm ever so sorry about that.Scenes from the sojourn in Japan of one of the New York reporters are interesting but lend nothing to the main story, really. Again, it is like McCrumb became interested with a particular vignette out of history and was determined to get it into this book, whether it fit or not. Actually, I think it might have worked better if the Japanese sideline had been the main tale, although it comprises at least a third of the book and so it almost is.Here's hoping the next one is back on track for everyone, as I don't imagine this any more fun to write than it was to read. Darn it.

34 of 37 people found the following review helpful. Worth waiting for... By Dr. Cathy Goodwin If you are new to McCrumb or the Ballad novels, I wouldn't start with this book. Part of the fun is reading about 12-year old Nora Bonesteel, who's been featured as a steely-eyed intimidating elder in earlier novels. At first I missed the format McCrumb has used earlier with so much success. I love her novels when she goes back and forth between time periods, tracing seeds of current conflict back to much earlier times. I didn't find the journalists especially appealing. And in some ways the novel shares themes with McCrumb's earlier novel about Frankie Silver. But McCrumb's ballad novels deserve to be read deeply, more than once. As with novels like Rosewood Casket, McCrumb introduces a cast of characters, awkwardly thrown together, each with his or her own story. In this case a horde of "big city" newspaper reporters have come to write about a beautiful young woman who's accused of murdering her father. The young woman's brother has arranged representation and has sold the story to raise money for hiring good lawyers...or so he claims. On the one hand, the story focuses on the reporters who struggle to cover the story in a way that will please their readers and editors. If that means creating a drama and even faking some scenes, so be it. The idea is to picture justice in the backwoods of America, to create a contrast, even if the backwoods no longer exists (and maybe never did). Only Nora's cousin Carl refuses to play along because he's from the country himself. Some of the novel's best bits of writing come when Carl reads between the lines of the country men he encounters, reminiscent of the delicious social commentary sprinkling the McPherson series.Front and center, the storyline considers Erma Morton, attractive and better educated than most of her female contemporaries. We visit her prison cell and as the book unfolds, we understand what really happened that night in her home. Unlike Frankie Silver, Erma is educated and a little sardonic about her situation. She understands her role: she's a pawn for the news media. It's not really about her at all, she realizes, and we readers wonder how many famous and not-so-famous defendants have shared her thought. That's the third theme, unfolding with different degrees of subtlety through the novel. Justice sometimes gets skewed to serve public and private economic interests. McCrumb hints at a large theme whe she introduces the story of Mary the elephant who was hanged for no rational reason. Anyone who's cynical about justice, even today, might question how many convictions are upheld for reasons that do not benefit the greater society. We could even draw a parallel with the Amanda Knox case, but I leave that to readers to ponder after they've read and digested this book.Throughout the novel McCrumb introduces pieces of history, such as a cameo appearance by the Carter family. They slow down the action but I suspect readers won't mind.My own Ballad favorite so far is Rosewood Casket. Devil Amongst the Lawyers has equally strong writing and plot. While I was glad to see a new volume in the series, I hope McCrumb will set her next Ballad closer to the present and I hope she doesn't wait so long. Unlike Nora Bonesteel, I can't predict whether I'll be around to see the last of the series and I'd hate to miss even one.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Puzzling and less than compelling By Carol Roberts This book was a puzzlement to me. From the title I expected to hear a lot about the lawyers in a case of murder in the Appalachian region of southern Virginia. Instead, I heard a lot about the big city reporters who came to cover it. The defendant was a pretty young woman who came home from college in the mid-1930's to teach school in her home town and was accused of killing her father. It was the early days of mass media, and suddenly the whole country was getting every detail of such small-town dramas as was about to unwind here. A pretty, educated girl was about to be railroaded by her backwoods neighbors who resented her improving herself. The fact that this was a wild exaggeration was no deterrent. The public wanted to believe in hillbilly justice, and the big city reporters were going to give them what they wanted. This was the gist of the story I found here. Earlier McCrumb ballad novels told about the people of southern Virginia and northeastern Tennessee. This time she told of those who would stereotype them and throw truth to the wind to satisfy their readers. She included one reporter from a nearby Tennessee newspaper, plus Nora Bonesteel, a fixture in her novels as one who has the Sight and has glimpses of the future. At this time she is 14. These two know the truth and try to tell it, to no avail.Another puzzlement is the introduction of the Japanese influence on one of the New York reporters who came to cover the story. It seemed to have no tie to the events taking place except to make his character more complex. He was an erudite snob who felt his readers should work to understand him instead of the other way around. His sometime companion was what was being called a sob sister, a woman who was far from pretty and expected little from those around her. The photographer who accompanied them went out of his way to find barefoot children and entice them to wear their grandparents' clothes for his pictures. Not an attractive threesome.I felt that McCrumb was getting even with the intruders who had all too often sought the differences in the mountain people rather than the similarities to their fellow countrymen. However, I found the tale less than compelling. In the early part of the book I had some difficulty staying awake. All in all, if the book is approached with no expectations, it is interesting, and she does tell us at the end what happened to everyone with the advent of World War II and with it a whole new world.

Fine dining and the accolades of Michelin stars once meant chandeliers, white tablecloths, and suited waiters with elegant accents. The stuffy attitude and often scant portions were the punchlines of sitcom jokes—it was unthinkable that a gourmet chef would stoop to plate a burger or a taco in his kitchen. And yet today many of us will queue up for a seat at a loud, crowded noodle bar or eagerly seek out that farm-to-table restaurant where not only the burgers and fries are  organic but the ketchup is homemade—but it’s not just us: the critics will be there too, ready to award distinction. Haute has blurred with homey cuisine in the last few decades, but how did this radical change happen, and what does it say about current attitudes toward taste? Here with the answers is food writer Alison Pearlman. In Smart Casual: The Transformation of Gourmet Restaurant Style in America, Pearlman investigates what she identifies as the increasing informality in the design of contemporary American restaurants. By design, Pearlman does not just mean architecture. Her argument is more expansive—she is as interested in the style and presentation of food, the business plan, and the marketing of chefs as she is in the restaurant’s floor plan or menu design. Pearlman takes us hungrily inside the kitchens and dining rooms of restaurants coast to coast—from David Chang’s Momofuku noodle bar in New York to the seasonal, French-inspired cuisine of Alice Waters and Thomas Keller in California to the deconstructed comfort food of Homaro Cantu’s Moto in Chicago—to explore the different forms and flavors this casualization is taking. Smart Casual examines the assumed correlation between taste and social status, and argues that recent upsets to these distinctions have given rise to a new idea of sophistication, one that champions the omnivorous. The boundaries between high and low have been made flexible due to our desire to eat everything, try everything, and do so in a convivial setting. Through lively on-the-scene observation and interviews with major players and chefs, Smart Casual will transport readers to restaurants around the country to learn the secrets to their success and popularity. It is certain to give foodies and restaurant-goers something delectable to chew on.

Smart Casual: The Transformation of Gourmet Restaurant Style in America, by Alison Pearlman

From Booklist America’s restaurants have undergone virtual revolution in the past several decades. Thanks in no small part to the ubiquity of food television, patrons have grown ever more knowledgeable and demanding about what they are served. They also want excitement and drama, just like what they see on the tube, and a restaurant’s “vibe” or lack of one profoundly influences its success. At the same time, strict rules of etiquette for dining in public have largely disappeared. Foods such as offal, rarely seen on twentieth-century American menus, now dominate. Flourishing and popular restaurants must cater to a range of tastes and daily need to challenge diners with novel approaches to serving and eating. Pearlman visits dozens of today’s restaurants and reports on how they meet contemporary expectations with fresh interior design, innovative cooking, and daring business plans. Culinary students and budding restaurateurs will definitely profit from Pearlman’s research. --Mark Knoblauch

Review “If you have ever seen an open kitchen or enjoyed a tasting menu on a bar stool and wondered why, Smart Casual is certainly the book to read!” (Wylie Dufresne, chef of wd~50)"Drawing from personal dining experiences, interviews with chefs and an eye for detail sharpened by years as an art historian, Alison Pearlman explores how gourmet restaurant style in America has shifted away from the maître d’s stand and toward a 'come as you are' mentality over the past several decades. Open-kitchen concepts, relaxed dress codes and haute upgrades to everyday favorites (remember the gourmet hamburger trend?) all come under Pearlman’s insightful study in this quick read, making it a perfect accompaniment for solo trips to Startle.com Tastemaker Thomas Keller’s Bouchon Bakery or fellow Tastemaker David Chang’s Momofuku Noodle Bar—New York eateries that represent the scope of Pearlman’s commentary to a casual, tasty T." (Forbes Travel Guide)“Alison Pearlman knows not only what we want to eat, but where we want to eat it, and how we want it served. She shows us how we changed the food-service industry (and how it changed our expectations of it). The amazing thing is she does this in a book that informs, intrigues, and often amuses us. Who knew a book about business could be so delightfully tasty?” (Gary Allen, author of The Herbalist in the Kitchen)“Alison Pearlman’s Smart Casual is a delicious romp through America’s rapidly changing and diverging restaurant scene. It begins with the old haute cuisine establishments frequented by the upscale, well-to-do diners, but concentrates on contemporary restaurants with their experimental, innovative, and exotic cuisines. It is an informative, witty, and delightful book brimming with hot anecdotes and tangy tidbits. It is a must read for all serious foodies.” (Andrew F. Smith, Oxford Encyclopedia of Food and Drink)“Among all the books about shifts in American taste during the past few decades, this stands out as the most meticulously detailed, insightful, and well researched, including interviews and even first hand experience. Pearlman captures perfectly the shift in gastronomic sensibilities, the demise of stuffy white-tableclothed shrines, and the rise of good, honest food served without pretension. This study is erudite and hip, written with both verve and a keen analytical eye.” (Ken Albala, author of Pancake: A Global History)"Alison Pearlman visits dozens of today’s restaurants and reports on how they meet contemporary expectations with fresh interior design, innovative cooking, and daring business plans. Culinary students and budding restaurateurs will definitely profit from Pearlman’s research." (Booklist) "Smart Casual is concise and well researched. . . . It should serve as a useful addition to food studies, cultural studies, sociology, and design history collections. Recommended." (Choice)

She teaches modern and contemporary art and design history at Cal Poly Pomona and is the author of Unpackaging Art of the 1980s, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

By Gretchen Varkonyi Ms. Pearlman's Smart Casual is a truly ambitious undertaking, and she rises to the challenge of taking us through "the transformation of gourmet restaurant style in America" with bushels of industry blurb presented in a deliciously palatable format for the reader. Like those cooks who puree spinach and bake it into the brownies, the book is chock full of really-good-for-you stuff like how and why gourmet restaurants with invisible chefs in invisible kitchens have evolved into celebrity status chefs with open and interactive kitchens, the carefully calculated design and lighting of those kitchens, and how social and cultural trends have spurred the popularity of cookbooks, recreational cooking classes, and vacation travel as destination eating. And that's a mere morsel: From Jose Andres's minibar in DC to Alice Waters' Chez Panisse in Berkeley, Ms. Pearlman table-hops us through a mouth-watering journey of meals, trendy and traditional, and provides the hip, informed dinner conversation as well - meticulously researched and ladled out with a fresh voice, a dry wit and an undeniably deep appreciation for food and its social and cultural currency. An edifying read!G. Varkonyi, Caterer & ChefThe Dinner DameProvidence, RI

Review “Detailed training exercises teach dogs to respect critical areas such as the child’s room and the space around the baby, and how to walk next to a stroller, all of which create a safe environment for both baby and pet. Most dog-training books … only have a general chapter about babies, making this specialized guide a recommended addition.”— Library Journal“There’s excellent advice in this guide....This book will become a much loved workbook.”— Fit Pregnancy“Well written and edited, with excellent photographs and illustrations.”— Dog World“Michael Wombacher is a maestro of dog trainers. His clarity of thinking, sense of humor, and skills in communicating make dog training fun for both pet and pet lover.”— Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony“Consistently provides practical, gentle methods for molding dog behavior.”— Jeffrey Bryan, DVM“Simply great! A must for all expecting dog owners. Full of useful information to help ease a big transition.”— Dean Beyerink, DVM“Written with style and humor by one who truly understands dogs and the relationships they have with their families.”— Joyce Weidman, DVM

Swain This book gets 5 starts from me because it is easy to read and the concepts are easy to apply immediately.I found that the training tactics in this book created a balanced approach of behavior correction coupled with positive reinforcement that get quick results! I couldn't be happier with my dogs' progress (I have four of them all over the age of 9 years)! This isn't the first book that I attempted to utilize to try to get results before the birth of our first baby--the other two books I used focused solely on positive reinforcement, and although my dogs loved the treats, they did not show any noticeable improvement in behavior. I was getting frustrated until I received this book! The author explains that quick and unpleasant corrections are used in the dog world to communicate with one another so why wouldn't we use quick corrections to achieve the same results. Once the message is received by the animal then positive reinforcement can be used to make it a habit. It makes perfect sense and really works!I also need to mention that I had a question regarding a specific technique and reached out to the author via email. I was VERY pleasantly surprised when he responded within 30 minutes! I was truly blown away by his quick response and genuine concern for my ability to apply his training methods. He even offered a telephone conference to answer my questions. This book works and it works quickly! Do NOT buy any other dog/baby preparation book. You will be wasting your time, energy and money!

I prepared for bringing home my infant with two other trainers who both focused almost exclusively on treat-based obedience training as a sole method to work with my dogs. Despite this preparation, when I brought home my infant daughter from the hospital, both dogs were wrecks with anxiety. I ordered this book straightaway, based on a previous positive experience I'd had working with Michael, and I was not disappointed! He offers a much broader range of strategies and techniques, and they helped my dogs feel confident that they still had a loving place in the family. Their behavior changed in a matter of days! The book is well-organized, and his methods are set out in an easy-to-follow manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone planning on introducing a new baby to the household. It works!

Then my husband read it and did whatever it says to do, and our dog's worst habits are very much improved practically overnight. And he's not even done reading the book! Highly recommend

In 1892, Oscar Zoroaster Diggs turned up in Topeka with a suitcase full of high quality emeralds. Instantly the richest man in Kansas, his winning smile and keen mind launched him into a meteoric political career. As Secretary of War under Teddy Roosevelt, Diggs oversees the construction of the ultimate tool for spreading democracy, a fleet of rigid airships. Dorothy Gale, a reporter for the Kansas Ear, is the one person who knows the truth about Diggs. She met him ten years prior in the Emerald City, where he ruled as the Wizard. But how can she explain to her editor that Diggs intends to use his aerial navy to invade an island in the clouds ruled by witches? Stopping Diggs is going to take more than the power of the press. She’ll need the help of old friends, and maybe a Winged Monkey, as she pursues the Wizard across the wondrous and deadly Land of Oz.

Bad Wizard, by James Maxey

About the Author James Maxey’s mother warned him if he read too many comic books they’d warp his mind. She was right. Now an adult who can’t stop daydreaming, James is unsuited for decent work and ekes out a pittance writing down demented fantasies about masked women, fiery dragons, and monkeys. Oh god, so many monkeys. In an effort to figure out how Superman could fly, James read books by Carl Sagan and Stephen Jay Gould and Stephen Hawking. Turns out, Superman probably wasn’t based on any factual information. Who would have guessed? Realizing it was possible to write science fiction without being constrained by the actual rules of science proved liberating for James, and led to the psuedo-science fiction of the Bitterwood series, superhero novels like Nobody Gets the Girl, and the steam-punk visions of Bad Wizard. James lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina with his lovely and patient wife Cheryl and too many cats. For additional information about James and his writing, visit jamesmaxey.net.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A delightful extension of the original Oz storyline By The Tattered Thread I received this book free in exchange for a review but despite that kindness I give my candid opinions below. It's been 10 years since Dorothy has returned from Oz. She's now an investigative reporter for a Kansas newspaper and her primary target is none other than the Wizard who himself has successfully returned and is now the Secretary of War. I'll not be spoiling anything if I reveal that they don't stay in Kansas very long in this one.Firstly I can't say enough good things about this author. I get offered a lot of books and many of them... well, let's' just say our relationships just don't work out. Maxey, on the other hand, had me hooked from the first chapter of the Dragon Apocalypse series that he sent me when it first came out a couple of years ago. His writing is twisted in that delightful way that makes you want to know what oddness he's going to aspire to next and makes you sigh sadly when the last page is turned. If not for the pile of free books on my bookshelf, Maxey is the author I'd look to first if forced to actually buy my literature. On the positive side, Bad Wizard is a delightful continuance of the Oz series and, for the most part, retains much of the flavor of the original book series. It's obvious Maxey has done his research as he delves deeply into the original oeuvre of written Oz and ignores the cinematic adaptions. The book is filled with all the old favorites as well as many of the less known personages from the original series. To all this traditional Ozishness, Maxey also applies a subtle layer of mild steampunk. Our favorite munchkins can now look to the skies to behold a fleet of dirigibles. It's a very complimentary mix of images. The only negative I can really propose is that while Maxey has retained much of the original flavor of Oz, he has burnished off to some extent the kid-friendliness of the original. As an adult I find this a positive development but it does give me some small pause in recommending it to my kids until they're teenagers. In summary, as always seems to be the case, Maxey has nailed it. Once started this one was hard to put down and I found myself reading it while standing at the stove or brushing my teeth. It quietly grabs your attention and keeps it mercilessly hostage as Maxey's work tends to do. If you're a fan of the Oz milieu, then this is a must have. Those outside that demographic are encouraged to get a copy of the original Wizard of Oz (available as a free Kindle download) and read that first. It's about a two hour investment and well worth it as background and education.

Well-motivated, well-plotted tribute to the Oz stories By Mike Reeves-McMillan It's just as well that I didn't remember until I finished this book that I'd previously read the author's Nobody Gets the Girl, and heartily disliked it for its dark and cynical tone. That would have prevented me from reading this one, which wasn't like that to nearly the same extent, and which I enjoyed. There are a few reimaginings of Oz around these days. Wicked (the show and the book) and the movie Oz the Great and Powerful spring immediately to mind, and there's also been an anthology of short stories. This one, although it includes characters from the second book (Princess Ozma, the witch Mombi and, by reference, Jack Pumpkinhead), basically starts from the first book of the long series, the one everyone knows because of the classic movie, and considers only it to be "canon".About a decade after the events of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Dorothy is working on a newspaper, trying to expose the Wizard, Oscar Diggs, who has risen to be US Secretary of War under President Teddy Roosevelt and is using his position, his personal wealth, and his flim-flam to assemble a force loyal directly to him which can invade Oz by zeppelin. (This gets the book referred to as "steampunk". Even though we see airships and a steam-powered exoskeleton, though, it doesn't have much of a steampunk feel to me.)I liked the fact that two of the characters have completely incompatible world views. Esau, known as the Flying Monkey because he's a hairy man who performs an aerial act, is a devout Christian; Dorothy, disturbed and disillusioned by her youthful experiences, is a principled atheist. They manage to work together with a minimum of argument, united by their conviction that Diggs must be stopped from regaining power in Oz. That neither one is depicted as "right" while the other is "wrong" shows a restraint in the insertion of authorial personal philosophy that isn't, sadly, all that common.Something I didn't like is that Dorothy's late fiance (who she once refers to, in an apparent continuity error, as having been her husband) is the exact male equivalent of a Woman in a Refrigerator: a character who exists only so that their death can motivate the protagonist, not as an actor in their own right. I see no reason why swapping the genders would make this trope OK, though doing it to a woman, that is, a member of a group often already deprotagonised, is worse.Apart from a few words missing from their sentences and a couple that are misused ("enormity" for "enormousness" and "adverse" for "averse"), the editing is good, and it very nearly made my "well-edited" shelf.Overall, apart from the Man in a Refrigerator, this was a well-motivated, well-plotted tribute to the Oz stories, and enjoyable as an old-style adventure quite apart from its literary origins.

Fun reimagining of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz By Elise Bad Wizard is a sort of sequel/retelling of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, featuring some characters from the other Oz stories as well. Dorothy Gale is now a grown up young woman and working as a journalist for the Kansas Ear publication. She is on a mission to expose Oscar Diggs, better known as The Wizard of Oz, as he plans to take his army of airships to reclaim his throne in the Emerald City. Dorothy finds herself back in Oz once more accompanied by old friends and new in their fight to stop Diggs once and for all.I enjoyed reading this book and I was already a fan of the Oz books, so you could say I know the lore and I'm not just familiar with the movie with Judy Garland. It serves as a nice little expansion on the universe. The theories about what Oz may represent spiritually were interesting, as well as the way magic worked in this reimagined world. It touches a little on some philosophical subjects too.I suppose this was mainly a sequel only to first book in the Oz series, while ignoring the rest, since I know Dorothy definitely met characters like Ozma and Mombi before. You don't necessarily have to have read any of the Oz books, and know the universe to understand this one, but you might miss out on a few references. It might even make you want to read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz for yourself.Of the new characters, I really liked the family oriented Esau and the interesting and fun take on the "flying monkey." Clever.Diggs was a really nasty villain. He lived up to his status and often wouldn't hesitate to kill anyone who tried to get in his way. He was not remorseful about it either. He might even be too extreme. Even hearing about his back story, I had a hard time sympathizing with him. He is much more powerful than he was before.Dorothy is still likable, but has changed since she last left Oz. She struggles with her own identity and place in the world and has become more of a skeptic.I found the resolution a little cartoony. Things start to get really crazy and out there, but it was a good read. I was entertained by this new take on the universe. I liked it more than Wicked even, but that was something totally different and you can't really compare the two.
