Early 19th-century Hawaiian women created quilts using bright, solid-colored fabric. They would fold a large piece of fabric into quarters or eighths and cut flowing motifs symbolic of their lush environment. The practice of using a single piece of solid-color fabric hand-appliquéd onto a white background became their tradition― a tradition that both inspired and stimulated the author when creating her own designs. With 26 patterns to get you started and easy-to-follow directions, learn to cut and stitch both hand- and machine-appliquéd blocks. Projects include “Hawaiian Seas” wall quilts, “Hawaiian Christmas” with four blocks, and various flowers and sea creatures. In her new book Creating Hawaiian-Inspired Quilts, Judith Sandstrom has adapted traditional, large scale, symmetrical Hawaiian appliqué patterns to paper-cut designs manageable for quilters of all skill levels.The motifs are 'pure American', including butterflies, tulips, daffodils and bluebirds, Christmas Cactus, and Christmas themes.She offers a new technique for pattern transfer with step-by-step photographs. Needed supplies and basic directions for making the quilts are included.Innovations include incorporating more than one color in the appliqué and using several different design elements to make the appliqué. Patterns make wall to twin bed sized quilts. Lovely merging of traditional piece quilting and Hawaiian applique By iiiireader It is important to note that this book, “Creating Hawaiian-Inspired Quilts” is for quilt patterns inspired by Hawaiian quilts and not patterns for traditional Hawaiian quilts themselves. There is considerably piecework involved in some of the quilts which is not at all traditional.Given that, it is really easy to see where the author, Judith Sandstrom, has incorporated the look and feel of Hawaiian quilts. I love the look of a two-tone applique quilt and some of the patterns reflect that while others really seem to focus a bit more on piecing.It is really a matter of taste as to which a quilter would prefer.The instructions were well done and I enjoyed reading the history of quilting making in Hawaii as well as the author's experiences in discovering the traditional art form.I think that the book is a good one for someone who wants to make a project which involves a bit of Hawaiian style applique and who likes to do more traditional quilting at the same time. If that sounds like something you would like, then this book could be a good one for you. If you are looking for a book of traditional Hawaiian patterns, you might be disappointed in this book. I think it is extremely well done and deliver on what it promises.I noted that someone in their review mentioned a misprint. In the digital version that I received, pages 22 and 29 were in their proper place. Hopefully, the paper version has also been corrected.I received a temporary digital copy of this book from the publisher, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, via Netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

One of the best I have ever read By Photo Bug This was an unusually different approach to intelligence and partisan activities in France during several months before the D-Day invasion. Although it is fiction and some historical fiction, the writer brings that intense time to life with the story of an English naval officer who gets involved in the deception carried out to convince the Germans that the invasion would not be in the Normandy area. The Germans have a female operative with the mission to try to discover the true invasion site, and the two interact to form the principal story-line of the book. There are a few sub-plots which also are convincingly brought to life by the author. It appears that the author did a great deal of research to provide a realistic and believable story. The Kindle version is almost error free. This is one of the best I have read, and there are some surprises and twists and turns that will grab and keep the reader's interest from beginning to end. For those who enjoy this genre, I can highly recommend this book; I also hope the author will publish more of the same.

A Great World War II Tale By Patrick Clark The Best of Our Spies is a story about the spy you hate to love, and conversely the spymasters who are hard to like. On the face of it, the character Nathalie Mercier is an eminently detestable Nazi spy, quite willing to sacrifice others to the cause of National Socialism, but then the shades of gray begin to kick in and the reader is able to see her as victim as well as villain. This nuanced novel based on the true story of the British Double Cross operations that preceded D-Day is a wonderful read. The characters are not the stereotyped World War II caricatures so often encountered in books about the war, they are real human beings with their virtues, faults, and frailties. The plot twists and turns as the war forces Nathalie to make painful choices and decisions as her life spirals out of control. The Best of Our Spies is amongst the best of our stories about the war that so dramatically changed the world.

About the lead-up to D-Day and the Allies' invasion of Occupied France and the efforts made by the British to fool the Germans into where exactly the landings would take place. Into this, we follow our hero, Owen, and his new wife who may or may not be who he thinks she is. We see the story evolve from numerous different points of view - the main characters manipulated and used for the Greater Cause, British intelligence, German intelligence, the occupying Germans, a German spy working in Britain, and see the work of the French resistance. Riveting stuff.

There is very little information in these books, the writer is definitely not professional or skilled and the two books, both way too short to even count as books, contradict themselves.As an example, in the first book the author states that "experts advise that you make 1,000 liters your minimum capacity" while in book two the author recommends you start with "Anything large enough to hold about 50 gallons of water." Forget that one book is written by an Australian author and the second by an American author, both of which are published under the single author here. But advising that experts suggest a minimum of 1,000 liters, or about 265 US gallons and then suggesting starting with less than 20% of that size doesn't qualify as an "Ultimate" guide to anything.I am sure I've read extremely similar wording from both the books in this in separate works by other authors, so I expect that these works may even have been lifted from websites or copied from other publications. Especially since the language used in the two books does not appear to be from the same author.Language is another issue in these books, neither of which were written by professionals, let alone ever edited. The first book uses suggestions like "boldly" raising your pH, not a term used by nonfiction authors, or usually any seasoned author in any work. The second book suggests that "You must have been very thrilled that you are ready to leap out of your set and start building." Who uses language like that, even in normal life?No, the five star reviews on this work are fake. There's no way any sane reader could make the claims in these reviews about these short, light and generally useless works.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Garbage, do not buy!!! By Denny McDonald This book is complete garbage. I was immediately disappointed with the size, it is maybe 40 pages long. The two books are sloppily put together, in backwards order I might add, and none of the language in the book is professional nor is it informative. It seems to have been written by someone with a high school education and simple knowledge of how to do internet searches. Do not waste your time or money on this book.

I read the entire book (if it can be called a book), in 30 minutes. It is mostly fluff and contains almost no practical information. Save yourself some money and read a few papers/articles written that are available on the internet. Watch some youtube videos and you will be much farther ahead.

I was contacted by Jordan Mierek and offered a complimentary copy of this novel – the sequel to the breath taking Treasure, Darkly – in exchange for an honest review. It’s not often that I can say the second installment in a series truly lives up to the potential of its predecessor, but in this case I most certainly can, and with gusto. I was afraid, with this second novel, that one of the two elements I loved so much in the first – Mierek’s astonishingly elegant grasp of both steampunk atmosphere and the Western genre – would have to flag. But no, both are still alive and well in the Treasure Chronicles universe!I was completely taken in by each of the characters all over again, but Amethyst is especially given her moments to shine in this novel. As with the first, if I have one complaint it’s that I’m again left hungry for more of this series! The author has stated on her Goodreads page that further installments are hopefully to come, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.If you’re a fan of steampunk, westerns, romances, or crossed-genres in general and you haven’t given this series a shot, please do. I whole-heartedly recommend it.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was looking forward to reading this one. This was a fantastic continuation of the story started in the first book; I really enjoyed it. There is a ton of wonderful western steampunk action. This book wraps up the story started in the first book, but is sounds like there may be more adventures in the future for Clark and Amethyst.Clark and Amethyst are traveling the countryside in an effort to find all of Clark’s father’s inventions and keep them out of the hands of the evil Senator Horan. However when Captain Greenwood can’t track down Clark he decides to go after the rest of the Treasure family in an effort to drive Clark out. With the army taking over their ranch the Treasure family ends up in exile. Clark is helping them survive but they deserve better than this and he wants to be the one to fix things. Of course Amethyst has a better idea and when she finds a vial of the same elixir that gave Clark his powers over death all bets are off.I absolutely loved this book. It’s one of those perfect books that is an excellent balance of everything. There is excellent world-building, engaging characters, interesting magic, tons of action, and a wonderfully unpredictable plot.I really loved spending more time with Clark and Amethyst; they are a great couple with a lot of pluck. We hear a lot more from Amethyst in this book. Over the course of the book she develops into a very daring and capable women, who is fierce yet still tender. We also spend more time getting to know the Treasure family and I really enjoyed that; they are an intriguing and resourceful family.We get to spend a bit more time in that grey in-between world of death. Amethyst does not shy away from power over death like Clark does. Also the powers that Erik’s serum give over death are explored more and expanded...this was really interesting. I would love to see this explored more in future books.The whole world has a very wild west feel to it, but there is also some interesting technology sprinkled throughout. There are a lot of interesting devices that were incredibly cool. I also really enjoyed all the shootouts and awesome action scenes.The story is very engaging and easy to read; the dialogue is snappy and flows well. The story is tied up well, but I would love to see more about these characters in future book. I will be sad if this is the last book in the series and we don’t get to read any more about this world and characters!Overall an absolutely wonderful western steampunk story. This book has it all; an excellent world, engaging characters, magic, action, and a twisty plot. I really loved it. I sincerely hope there are more books added to this series and that this isn’t the last one. I would recommend to those who like having some western feel to their action packed steampunk reads.

They are still hunting for Clark's father's inventions. That is until Captain Greenwood finds out about where Clark and staying and plans a trap using the Treasures. Clark does his best to protect Amethyst and the Treasures, but ends up following Mr. Treasure instead of going with his gut, and things get crazy from there. Amethyst has to find a way to save her new husband and her family. And she just might do that once she finds what it is Clark took a few years before.This book is fun! Amethyst is quite the spunky lady. I love her attitude and her fearlessness. I also love that she will stop at nothing to save the ones she loves. She has quite a bit of guts to take what is in the vial without knowing exactly what will be the outcome. I also love the surprise she receives in this book. The adventures in this book just keep coming and you will really have a hard time putting it down. I hope this isn't the last book in this series.

I used to purchase body scrubs in the store and would sometimes get irritated skin until one day I decided to Google the ingredients. Ouch! I did not like what I saw and my addiction to scrubs was put to rest, but I mourned - a lot. Then, a few weeks ago, my friend emailed me a link and told me I just HAD to read this book! Hallelujah! Lucky day! I bought the book and read through it in one reading. (Okay, I confess, i read through it twice!)I could imagine every scent, every aroma. I could almost feel it on my skin already, sloughing away the dried and rough patches... The next day I went to the store, got all of my ingredients together and started making scrubs. I am happy to announce that my addiction has returned and that now (three weeks after buying the book) I am officially a body scrub expert! Not to mention, that I am softer than every AND I am making my own with wonderfully healing organic ingredients.THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for putting this awesome book out into the world!

[[VIDEOID:a98cec45c3d35da8d5e78782a778a91]]This tutorial and technique filled book is a wealth of info on how to create all sorts of patterns, textures and images with all types of mediums on lots of different surfaces. It really covers a wide variety of techniques and the projects are all quite doable. If you want to expand how you make art or upcycle everyday objects you will have a lot to work with in this book. I tried the scribble garland technique first as I generally work with imagery and I thought it would be a good exercise in not thinking too much. I really like it and will be trying more of the abstract art focusing on color.

Great beginner's guide to surface design By BloomBakeCreate The author explores surface design on all types of substrates including, paper, fabric, leather, and even wood.Her four main techniques are gelatin printing, paste paper, credit card printing, and mark making. Armed with those techniques and a few more thrown in, the reader is given clear step-by-step instructions of 22 different projects, half of which are on paper. These projects are easy and a great introduction to surface design. The last chapter offers the reader some wonderful inspiration from other artists.This is a beautiful book with lots of information on this fun topic. The projects are easy, but give really nice results. If you are new to surface design, this is a great beginners guide to getting your feet wet. If you are a seasoned artist, you will probably find several ideas to expand your creativity.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Lots of great ideas! By Hello Happy The author has very creative ideas using materials that I almost always already have in my house. I especially liked the ideas that centered around recycled items, like using bubble wrap and a fabric-safe ink pad to decorate a tea towel. My kids already made the scribble garland by coloring sticker labels with markers and stringing them together to make a fun (and easy!) decoration for their bedroom. There’s some interesting projects for home decor, but also for embellishing jewelry and even shoes. One of my favorite projects is the sand and sea notecards. I used an old credit card to apply seafoam acrylic paint to the blank, white cards. I love how it turned out and it’s just a really fun technique, too. The finished look is like a really lovely watercolor effect. It gives tips on how to take care of skin and hair using natural home products instead of store bought products and explains about the very harmful chemicals that are used in brands we buy. The author has mastered in homemade beauty products with this set of books as they are not only extremely informative but well written and in general a necessity for all homes to have. I was so impressed by the easy instructions on how to make a face cream or body scrub or even a hair mask that I quickly began trying some of the recipes and already I am throwing away the harmful store bought stuff! With today's chemicals and pesticides in our food and water, last thing we should be doing is putting them on our face and bodies too! We all need to take care of ourselves inside and out! I really liked the book as it has many useful home remedies for our skin, hair. and all are naturally made. The store bought products are always harmful with chemicals which spoils our skin and hair big time. The book is very well written and presented and i started trying few of them and they were absolutely great. The instructions are very clear, easy and well written. Highly recommended book.

The Sixth Finger, by Chux Onyenyeonwu

About the Author Deacon Chux Onyenyeonwu was born in Nigeria in 1961. As a teenager, he attended the prestigious Christ the King College in his native Onitsha, where he first saw an episode of the TV miniseries Roots, and got hooked on Alex Haley Jr.'s works. His vision was to tell his own story. He started writing at the Oko Federal Polytechnic, where he was a pioneer student in banking. After the mandatory national service, he drove a kabukabu in Lagos to survive. He finally got his first job as an ambidextrous aide to one of Africa's richest men, which availed him the rare opportunity to travel and work in England and the USA. That was when he met and married Martina, who gave birth to his son CeeJay. On his own now, Deacon Chux is a kind of jack of all trades. He enjoys gardening, photography, grey and water landscaping, ornamental and precision foundry, teaching, preaching, catering, and is a grassroots community catalyst. Deacon Chux resides in his Paradise Gardens country home in the outskirts of Lagos with his wife and three children. His favorite hobby is travelling to see the world with his family. The Sixth Finger is his first novel.

There is so much to know and then keep up with, so many people to develop into viable characters. When you write from the point of view of the African Diaspora, then the tale gets daunting -- you are dealing with familial experiences on at least four continents! How do you get them reunited? That is the task that Chux Onyenyeonwu set out for himself. He did a suburb job. It's long, but well worth it.Africa during the slave trading years is most often described from the Eurocentric point of view. How amazing to experience Africa from the point of view of an African community losing its people to the slave trade. I knew that some Africans were complicit, but there were still people and situations that enlightened me. The Middle Passage, the trip to first Cuba and then the US is authentic. What happens to all these people/families over the next two hundred years is interesting to read. Chux Onyenyeonwu did exceptional homework. While he did not live in all these places, his tale is extremely plausible, interesting and intriguing.Diverse non-European cultures are often not explored in US schools; I don't think schools in Africa, Central or South America are different. Like us, they are educated primarily around Eurocentric people, places and experiences. But the countries of Africa, Central and South America have their own histories. Moreover, African people in these countries on these continents have unique experiences. This is why it is difficult for African in the Diaspora to unite. A diverse pool of cultural experiences, languages and socioeconomic classes, etc., etc., etc. must come together. Maybe now, after people read this book, we can enrich the dialogue and help find common ground. Five Stars -- for sure!Through the Lens of the Transatlantic Slave Trade

Families are separated and names modified, obliterating original identities. Could this story possibly end well? How does it end?Onyenyeonwu is engaging as he ingeniously weaves the caveat of a lineage with a uniqueness, a Sixth Finger. Although the story begins slowly with some minor concord variance, it immediately goes full steam after the first few chapters. It gets so riveting, it is near impossible to put the book down till after all 98 chapters and 531 pages of this thrilling "Faction"!Softer sensibilities may find some chapters tough to read with Onyenyeonwu's take no hostage writing approach and bravery in tackling sensitive issues that have plagued our world for decades. Chux Onyenyeonwu's writing style and historical research is super impressive as he takes us through several continents and world events that will challenge interpersonal perceptions.Because this book tackles in great detail, major harsh brutalities of an era, I venture to predict a sequel more aligned with peaceful synergies, as our world comes together to stamp out the walls of flames that have kept our "worlds" divided. Ironically, the rhetorical question in this brilliant author's last name silently captures our existence and undeniable equality.There is no doubt this book will go far, with the opening of the book cleverly starting in London, England on a typical cold London day with Big Ben in the background and complex protagonists and locations conjuring images best seen in movie theaters and screens around the world....

It went into detail on how to dry all sorts of herbs and the process of all of it. I did not realize that there was that much to it. I appreciated all the options the author provided such as drying racks, hang drying, etc. It really helped to know I was not limited to one option. My choice? I took a vintage wire lamp shade shell and am going to hang my herb bundles from there. It is fun to get creative! Thanks for a great book!

27 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Unique! I like and dislike parts of it but overall, it's a good book. It's unlike all my other needlework books By Jane in Milwaukee I don't have the previous book-- Storyland Cross Stitch: 15 Projects and a Free Gift for Your Stitching Pleasure --so I'm unfamiliar with Sophie Simpson. It's weird that the author is given as "What Delilah Did" which is the author's online business and blog and the very first mention of this is on page 142. Page 143 is the Acknowledgements page and on the very last page, 144, is the publishing info. I don't think any other of my huge library of books is like this.So what is this book all about? It states it has 15 projects and, wonderfully, 4 of the largest projects have charts on folded paper tucked into a small envelope on the back of the book.I far prefer Rebecca Ringquist's Embroidery Workshops: A Bend-the-Rules Primer which also includes a stamped piece of fabric in the back of the book. The main reason for this is that the biggest pattern given is for a dreadful bunny head surrounded by a simple oval border with a few flowers. It's entitled "Miss Millicent's Hare" and has a stitch count of 116 x 147: on 32 count linen, it will be a little over 7 x 9 inches. The entire bunny is stitched with one color of mocha with the exception that the one eye is black. Well...there are black eyelashes and whiskers. But the entire border is just as boring: in black and the 2 sets of flowers in one color of Kreinik gold braid. It's displayed as a framed picture on page 31 so at least you can tell if you like it. It's good that an estimate of 23 hours of stitch time is given. (For me, this would produce an amazing waste of one day in my life I'd never get back.)I'm not really impressed with the whimsical story given in page-long segments at the beginning of each of the 15 projects. But that's just me.I find her directions to be very clear and she gives an excellent photo display and text for materials and supplies needed. While the beginner techniques shown are pretty good, the stitch guide would be greatly improved if the nine stitches were shown over more than three pages...they're too small if you're not already familiar with the stitch.I like it that the three chapters are Bud (Small Projects for Beginners), Blossom (Mid-Sized Projects for Improvers--really like that term) and Bloom (Large Projects for Practised Stitchers). (Yes, she spells them "practised" and "jewellery" and "colour" because she's English.) The templates for each project not included in the patterns in the envelope are in the back of the book.The projects included are mostly 3-dimensional and range from a simple book mark to a jewelry roll to a really pretty band sampler cushion.The single most unusual thing about the book is her preference for stitching on felt using waste canvas--9 of the 15 projects including the large cushion. (Being from Britain, she prefers pure wool felt so be careful about moths if you use it.)It's dicey for me if I pick up a book and am not instantly drawn to do at least one project. Sadly, none of these spring out to me but that's because I have about a million books, projects, leaflets and kits already in line. I don't want to dissuade you buying this book if you would find the story whimsical (she even includes a recipe to make rose petal jam!) or any of the projects irresistible. The cost is pretty reasonable even for how new it is so, soon, it should go down even more. Yes, this book would be worth $5 to $10...to me anyway. If you get it, I hope you love it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. LOVE this book. By Jennifer This book is dreamy. My favorite needlecraft book so far. I love her style, botanical/vintage/fairy tale. I want to make everything in here! I made the cover project, the honey bee, and it took me less time than suggested in the book. I'm very happy with it. She gives excellent instructions, I am almost a complete beginner and she explains things quite nicely.

I own her previous book, Storyland Cross Stitch, as well and highly recommend them for beginners and experienced stitches alike. She clearly explains the materials and techniques she uses. Her writing style is so pleasant that I enjoy reading through the books which makes is so much easier to start and complete projects.
