About the Author Melanie de Miguel is a renowned UK beadwork artist and tutor. Her passion for the technical side of beading, the thread paths and how they influence bead positions in relation to each other stems from her scientific background. These combined fascinations have led her to create Hubble stitch and present it in this, her first ever beadwork book.

By Book Lover I received my copy of Let’s Hubble on Jun 22, 2015 and I’ve been Hubbling daily since then. This is the most exciting bead stitching book I’ve seen since the Contemporary Geometric Beadwork project. The stitch is pretty and there are lots of things you can do with it.The physical:This book has a wonderful binding. It has a spiral binding so you can lay it flat and even fold the front of the book around to the back and just show one page at a time. But what makes this binding really special is that the cover also wraps around the spiral binding so when you put the book on the shelf (just in case you ever do put this book away) you can read the title on the spine. I do love spiral bound bead books but I hate trying to find which spiral on my shelf is attached to the book I want. No problem with that here. The book has a smaller than typical format with pages measuring 8.25 inches wide (21 cm) by 8.25 inches tall.The layout is quite clean so it’s easy to read and follow the step-by-step instructions for each variation of the stitch. The diagrams are large, clean, precise, and colorful. Thread paths are clearly noted.Photos are very crisp and colorful. Very little in the way of “arty” presentations that just obscure the stitch detail you want to see. Melanie wants you to see that detail and has gone to lengths to make sure you can.The Instructions:Melanie has a delightful cheery, welcoming writing style. She’s aiming to provide you with the feeling of attending a workshop with her and includes green-tinted boxes entitled “Workshop Tips” She gives very clear instructions with helpful diagrams of each step. It’s easy to follow them. After learning these basic stitches and variations you will be ready to experiment on your own and come up with clever, delightful and beautiful designs.The book includes:An interesting introduction telling how the Hubble stitch came to be and how it got its name.Chapter OneA short (3 pages) explanation of materials and terms that you will need to know. (She skips the “obligatory” boring and wasteful ten pages of what a bead is and what kinds of thread the world contains...my bias is showing?)Chapter TwoHow to form the Hubble stitch foundation row and second row. This is the trickiest part of doing the Hubble stitch and Melanie gives you enough detail and tips (and adorable diagrams) to help you master the technique with ease.Project One: SpectrumThis a bracelet worked horizontally using seven rows of basic Hubble stitch with a different color for each row. Melanie shows a method of disguising the attachment of a magnetic sliding clasp using daisy spacers over the loops. (A great idea.) Then she spends a page discussing possible variations including bead finish, bead size, clasps, gradation of color, and embellishment.Project Two: Spex VortexOr as I call it: The Ruffle. This project is worked using four sizes of beads from 15/0 to 8/0 in basic Hubble and then adding an embellishment on the 8/0 edge using size 6/0 beads. So one side gets bigger much faster than the other, hence the ruffle effect. It’s very cute!Project Three: La NinaThis is a bracelet formed of two wavy strips in which the direction of the curve is reversed every 11 rows and the two strips are then entwined.Project Four: FansEarrings made using the Spectrum technique.Chapter ThreeInstructions for two-drop and three-drop Hubble. These are adorable stitches! Melanie shows pictures of color pattern variations.Project Five:MercuryA bracelet made using 2-drop Hubble worked horizontally with a magnetic slide clasp and those daisy spacers again. She did it all in metallic silver - hence the name “Mercury”. Suggested variations include embellishment with crystal beads.Chapter FourHorizontal Spaced Out Hubble “HorSO” stitchThis technique adds an extra bead - called a spacer bead - between each stitch horizontally.Project Six - Crystal LadderUsing HorSO and two-drop Hubble stitches to make a bracelet with Swarovski mini rounds as spacer beads.Melanie has included a very interesting photo of a piece made with basic Hubble stitch with super duos as spacer beads. That’s a cute idea.Project Seven - Enchanted ForestThis is a bracelet made with alternating rows of basic Hubble and two-drop Hubble, using a different color for each two-drop stitch but one color for all the basic Hubble rows. This is a project with a lot of potential for variation. The photo for the main version of the project shows the basic Hubble rows done in brown and the two-drop stitches done in shades of green, purple, red, yellow, blue, (etc). There is a photo of a variation made using a white pearl beads for the basic Hubble rows and shades of blue for the two-drop stitches. Cool and lovely.Chapter FiveVertical Spaced Out Hubble (VerSo) StitchThis is a variation of the basic Hubble stitch that includes spacer beads between rows of stitches, rather than between horizontal stitches. The spacer beads are included as each stitch is worked rather than added after a row is completed, in order to reduce the number of times the thread goes through the beads. There are several variations of VerSO: VerSO-1, which is used only for Hubble-in-the Round, adds one spacer bead above each stitch. VerSO-2: adding two spacer beads fringe style (Albion stitch style). VerSO-3: adding two spacer beads ladder style.Project 8 - Christmas CuffThis bracelet uses HorSO two-drop Hubble with VerSO-2 spacing the rows. The color pattern using clear, silver-lined crystal, green, and red beads forms rows of “Christmas Trees”Chapter SixHubble-in-the-Round (Circular and Tubular Hubble) to make snowflakes and ropes.Project 9: SnowflakesStitch Hubble in the round using basic and two-drop HorSO Hubble to make snowflake shapes. (And if you do as I did and keep adding two-drop rows without increasing you get a tiny bowl with a snowflake bottom!)Project 10: Hubble RopesMelanie instructs you to make a rope using four stitches of basic Hubble around. This works. I tried making a rope using five stitches around and found it was too stiff to curve. The four-stitch version does curve adequately for a bracelet or a necklace. Variation: Make it with two-drop HubbleProject 11: Scarf RingMake a tube using a mixed pattern of basic Hubble, VerSo-1, and HorSO stitches, then embellish open spaces with Swarovski bicones. Add fringe.Chapter SevenInverted Hubble –or how to bezell with Hubble. Very clever and very cute!Project 12: Solar FlaresBezelling a 14mm rivoli with size 15/0 beads. I love this one.Note:Melanie makes more than one reference to “Book 2" and I for one am already looking forward to it. Hope it doesn’t take too long! In case you hadn’t figured it out – I love this book!If you’ve really read this far, go buy this book.I’ve taken photos of some of the samples I’ve made and attached them to this review.

Well Done, Melanie on creating something so much fun to do. I love how the stitch makes the finished product feel. Great ideas. Glad I bought this one. This is one that will not gather dust on a shelf.

I'm really impressed by the thought and design that went into the creation of the stitch (and variations) presented in this book, as well as the layout itself! Great, full-colour pictures, easy-to-follow diagrammes and instructions (even for the more complex stitchwork), and a myriad of projects that will surely keep even advanced beaders entertained, this was a surprise hit with the beaders I know and several copies will definitely be finding their way into some stockings this holiday season. Thanks for such an uncommon bead book!
