About the Author Christopher Rush was born in St Monans and taught literature for thirty years in Edinburgh. His books include A Twelvemonth and a Day and the highly acclaimed To Travel Hopefully. A Twelvemonth and a Day served as inspiration for the film Venus Peter, released in 1989. The story was also reworked by Rush in a simplified version in 1992 as a children's picture book, Venus Peter Saves the Whale, illustrated by Mairi Hedderwick, which won the Friends of the Earth 1993 Earthworm Award for the book published that year that would most help children to enjoy and care for the Earth.

I bought it following reading a Sunday Times' review, and viewed it as a more palatable way for me to learn about the Iliad and the Odyssey than reading the originals, for which I simply wouldn't have the concentration. Yes, there's lots of swearing and some of the prose is deliberately very crude - but that merely achieves the author's stated aim of trying to show how brutal war, and some aspects of civilisation, were at that time. The early part of the book takes much longer to read than the latter stages : there's numerous characters and previous events which must be absorbed by the reader in the first third or so of the book, whereas towards the end, it's really just a romp home (albeit one which takes 10 years). So, in summary, thanks for the book Christopher Rush. I enjoyed it, will thoroughly recommend it, and feel that I have benefitted from reading it.
