I have greatly enjoyed reading her books (with the aforementioned exception), and highly recommend them to anyone with children in their life.Her books are entertaining, well written, and great fun. This book on rabbits is no exception. She explains the difference between rabbits and hares. She tells how rabbits communicate. And she finishes the book with Funny Bunny Facts—one of my favorite pages ;-)Do you know that pet rabbits can be trained to do tricks?Do you know that the only part of a rabbit that sweats are its feet?Do you know 'bunny talk'? Read her book and you'll learn how they communicate.A delightful book, and highly recommended—for both the child in your life, and the adult who will have fun reading it, too.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Just when I think I know everything.... By Whistlers Mom this author writes another book and I learn some new stuff. I honestly didn't think there was anything I didn't know about rabbits. According to Ms. Child, half of the rabbits in the world live in North America and at least half of THOSE rabbits must live in my back yard, so I consider myself an experienced rabbit-watcher. Still, I got some surprises.I knew rabbits can run fast ("Run like a rabbit" is a popular Southern expression) but 30-40 MPH? Wow! I always thought that "hare" is simply an old word for "rabbit" and was interested to learn that they are really two different animals and that some of the critters we call "rabbit" aren't rabbits at all, but hares. I had never heard of the Pygmy Rabbit and (if you asked me) would have guessed that it lived in Africa, not North America. And I knew that rabbits are more active at dawn and dusk (which is when predators learn to hunt them) but the word "crepuscular" is a new one. I always thought that meant having a lot of open sores!If Ms. Child keeps writing this entertaining series, I might end up knowing as much as I think I do.

By Daisy S Well, I have always loved rabbits, but did not know that much about them other than how cute they are After reading this book about rabbits, I was amazed at the information in this book. It is full of color pictures and also interesting facts about rabbits.One of the facts stated in this book the author explains the difference between wild rabbits and domestic ones. I was suprised to learn that wild rabbits live to about ten years old while domestic one live to aboutvsixteen years old.This book is very well written and a wonderful book to read to a child. Also, it is so well written, I think that adults will enjoy it also.Highky recommended!

By Nilah M This book not only has tips and tricks to grown one's farm/garden, but also ample stories about the author's life, making it an engaging read. It feels like a really personal and passionate narration. It covers a wide breadth of topic, right from patio and tabletop gardening, to animal farming and even harvesting! That is a great mix right there. I was particularly interested in the postage stamp orchard and round the clock gardening, which really allows me to play it by the year and to my comfort, while ensuring healthy, flourishing greenery. The best practices section is useful too!

Fanny—known as the “Flying Housewife” by the time the games ended—was 30 years old and the mother of two. Another aging athlete was a copper-chestnut horse named Red, who had escaped from a slaughterhouse in America and had survived years of pulling a junk wagon prior to his appearance in England. The efforts of Red and his equestrian partner in the three-day event, the most challenging of the three equestrian competitions at the 1948 summer games, are central to the historical fiction "Tangerine Horse of the London Olympics."

About the Author Don Walters took his M.A. in theatre at Northwestern University, and after treading the boards as an actor and conspiring with actors as an artistic director, he worked as a drama editor in book publishing before returning to the field he had chosen years earlier — the Thoroughbred industry. Walters’s novel "Tangerine Horse of the London Olympics" is a historical fiction based upon the efforts of an aging Thoroughbred and his equestrian partner in the grueling three-day event of the 1948 London Olympics. The Olympics novel is the sequel to the author's popular historical fiction "The Woman Who Loved Horses," which spans the years 1934 to 1942 in America. Among his other books are the soft science fiction "Second Intelligence," which is a satirical portrait of UFOs and national security during the JFK era in America, and "The Book Of Original Sayings," a collection of thirty-eight sayings. He is also the author of the mystery-romance "Remembering Zoe" and the nonfiction narrative "The Splendiferous and Noteworthy Sierra Backpacking Expedition."

Having recently seen Stephen Spielburg's War Horse movie, I thought this book about the first Olympic Games held after WWII ended was thoroughly researched and much more entertaining than War Horse. The editing was quite good, very few typos, and the author's notes at the end were really interesting.Of course, it helps if you love horse stories, but even though I do, I learned a lot about three-day eventing that I did not know before. Really a fun read!

I enjoy just being with them. This was a good book to read, and just motivated me to visit a nearby ranch more often to be with horses. I learn so much just by observing horse behavior and interaction, that is helpful in dealing with humans.

By Ty Smith Hey, I'm no expert but I have said for years that coloring can relax the mind and take you back to a time when you had no worries. This book does just that minus the characters, but it IS for adults! Grab some colored pencils and get to the work of clearing your mind. As for me, I am no artist, so I appreciate the prepared canvas. This is my first purchase of this type but probably not my last!

Disappointing By BJS I have purchased multiple coloring books, both paper and kindle over the last 12 months and have been really happy with these purchases. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for this purchase. I took a chance on purchasing this kindle book as there were no previews of the pages available. I didn't expect to like every design, however, I didn't expect all the pages to be disappointing either. Perhaps these pages are just not to my liking but may appeal to someone else. I hope that other purchasers of this book enjoy and get benefit from their purchase.

Beautiful crafts for every level of crafting experience By Christine B As a crafter with many years of experience I found this book to be wonderful and inspiring! There are crafts for every level of crafter, from the novice to the advanced crafter, with all readers being able to follow the instructions and complete the projects. What I found to be particularly incredible about this book is the fact that you don't have to live by the beach to collect all of the supplies. For example, the author provides easy instructions on how to take ordinary sticks and turn them into a material that looks exactly like driftwood. Most supplies can be found at your big box retailer, or easily obtained via online craft supply shops or your local hardware store, and each project uses a minimum of supplies, so that it's not completely overwhelming and won't break your budget.The layout of the book is easy to navigate with a well thought out supply list, step by step photos and easy to follow instructions. It appears that there was a great deal of consideration that went into these projects and each one uses a different technique so you really feel like you are getting a great value for the money. From home decor to jewelry to stationery there is a project for every level of crafter to make for themselves or as a lovely gift. The mix of projects is quite impressive with a full 23 projects, not to mention the information at the beginning of the book to educate readers on techniques such as how to properly clean seashells, along with the easy templates that are provided in the end of the book.Not only are the projects beautiful but they are practical as well, with instructions on how to make knotted coasters, a river rock clock, and linen seashell motif pillows.I have thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel like it would make a lovely gift for any lover of the ocean and beaches. Instead of buying expensive mementos of your last trip to the shore now you can easily make your own for a fraction of the cost!

This facsimile edition of a 1922 children’s book features seventy-three dynamic and whimsical woodcut illustrations―the first woodcuts that the famed American craftsman Wharton Esherick produced. A high-quality replica authorized by the Wharton Esherick Museum, this book reveals the foundation of Esherick’s direction as an artist. Edited by Museum director Paul Eisenhauer, it also features a foreword by Museum assistant curator Laura Heemer. The illustrations frame verses that introduce children to the principles of evolution, a highly controversial topic at the time: the book was published three years before the famous Scopes “Monkey” trial of 1925 that resulted in the inclusion of the teaching of evolution in public schools. Drawn by the excitement of the controversy, Esherick threw his passion into these illustrations. Afterward he would go on to carve over 300 woodcuts, leading to decorative carving, and ultimately, to Esherick’s realization that he was a sculptor rather than a painter.

By Susan Drees Mary Marcy produced the original Rhymes of Early Jungle Folk in 1922, a time in which poetry on evolution, prehistoric man and the geological history of the earth was not as acceptable as it would be even 20 years later. But she was a forward thinker and wished to produce a work for children and the adults around them. Whartin Esherick shared her beliefs and goals and created the wonderful woodcuts that illustrate the poems.Marcy had previously devoted her life to labor causes but had run afoul of various government interdictions, especially during the First World War. Writing this book was her way to move into another path after her and her husband's home and papers were confiscated by the government as part of a program to repress any anti-war movements.Out of her sadness she created joy. With poems moving from the dinosaurs through geologic change to early man, on to the development of man as a hunter-gatherer and builder, taming fire and horses, Marcy covers virtually all of the plant and animal kingdoms. There are obvious inaccuracies given the fact that this was written almost 100 years ago and increases in knowledge over that time, but the essence is true. There are also occasional notes at a few poems for those adults seeking further clarification, particularly re: Darwin. And there are also snatches of humor, found in snippets or entire poems. One poem is dedicated to "The Thumb." Perhaps my favorite poem of all is "On the Bottom of the Ocean," a lovely view of the teeming life of the sea.I do recommend this replica edition of poems for adults and to share with whatever children you have at hand. As good as the first By JPS This is the second instalment of “Twilight of Empire”, Ian Ross’ series of books on the reign of Emperor Constantine, and the author’s second book. In a nutshell, it is as good as the first one, is easily worth five stars and I can only recommend it.This volume closely follows the first one which was centred on the hero’s involvement in the proclamation of Constantine as Augustus by his father’s field army in Eboracum when Constantius Chlorus died. This time, the action mostly takes place in Gaul, both along the Rhine frontier and in the south of Gaul between the years AD 306 and AD. The episode that is covered is the power struggle between Constantine and his father-in-law, Maximinian, the former Emperor and colleague of Diocletian whom the latter had forced to resign and who attempts a come-back at the expense of his son in law.Again, the author’s historical research has clearly been thorough and he has been meticulously attentive to details, and to delivering an interpretation of historical events which, although not explicitly supported by the sources (and for obvious reasons as you will see) is nevertheless plausible and realistic. Essentially, the ageing colossus Maximinian tried and ultimately failed to usurp Constantine’s power while he was busy fighting off Germanic raids on the Rhine.Again also, the author has been very attentive and careful when describing the personalities of his main characters (and of the secondary ones as well, by the way!). In my review of the first book, I insisted on “the care taken in characterising the Pannonian Centurion Aurelius Castus.” He is a tough, strong and somewhat brutish-looking soldier, who rose from the ranks because of bravery on the field and who, in this episode, gets promoted to become one of the Emperor’s Protectores, again because of his bravery. He does not come from a privileged background. He is not handsome and he is not educated either. He is no square-jawed “super-hero”, in other words and tends to hide his complexes about his humble Pannonian origins behind a rather bluff and rough appearance. Above all, he is the quintessential Roman soldier of the Late Empire, of the kind that would deliver Emperors further on during the second half of the fourth century (Valentinian I and his brother Valens were also Pannonians).The historical characters, those of Constantine himself, of the large-than-life Maximinian and his lust for lost power, and of his daughter Fausta, are also particularly interesting. The role that the author makes the young teenager Fausta play may be fiction, as the author admits, but it is nevertheless quite plausible. The ruthless ambitions of her father and of her husband, however, are corroborated by the events in which they took part. That neither of them comes across are particularly sympathetic is not exactly surprising even if the coarse, selfish and unscrupulous old Emperor is perhaps the worse of the two. Also well captured through the fictional character of one Domina Sabina, the wide of a senator holding a financial post in Africa, is the fate of (and the terror experienced by) the aristocratic relatives of those who held high positions across the Empire and got caught in civil wars between contenders for the supreme power. They were hostages for the good behaviour of their relatives, at best, and their survival depended on their subservience.Another characteristic carried over from the first volume is the author’s attention to historical details. The map of the port of Massilia and the description of this city and of Treves are remarkable. Constantine did build a bridge across the Rhine and a fort at Deutz across the Rhine facing Colonia Aggripensis (modern Cologne). The Protectores, who were above all staff officers hand-picked because of their bravery and fidelity and could go on to command regiments of their own as tribunes, were initially used as bodyguards before their role was taken at least partly taken over by Constantine’s forty Candidati. These are only a few examples of the author’s attention to such details.The same care is shown when describing battles, even if this volume is perhaps more about plots, intrigues and assassination attempts. By describing to his readers was one of the Late Romans’ punitive expeditions could look like, the author shows that these were certainly no leisurely strolls and that, despite the Roman Army’s edge in pitched battles, it could be quite vulnerable to ambushes. The other major battle is the storming of Massilia, of which I will say nothing more to avoid spoilers.Again, the author comes up with an interesting historical note explaining his choices. This note also contains a host of valuable references – just about all the main ones on the period – which I can only recommend for anyone wanting to learn more about this period after finishing this exciting and well written book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. a solid sequel By AJH While from a plot perspective this sequel is not as compelling as the earlier books it none the less is of sufficient interest to be enjoyable. Of much greater interest is the unusual late empire setting with the rise of early christianity and its role in changing attitudes within the population. The internal discord that wracked the later empire is also well illustrated and provides the basis for the story.

However, the book seems banged out and not illustrated so many of the good ideas are really just words about doing something with no real idea of what you get -- things like meat smokers, chained rain barrels would be nice to be able to actually make.

By Amazon Customer This book gives some interesting ideas for living in something other than conventional "stick-built" homes, but a few of them I don't see how they would be considered a "survival" type in times of weather emergencies (i.e. a Tiny Home on wheels would not be very safe in a tornado situation).

About the Author Dr. Cathy Alinovi received a general veterinary degree at the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine. However, she soon realized that most of her patients couldn’t be fixed by general veterinary medicine. Dr. Alinovi then trained and received certifications in a variety of alternative and holistic methods including veterinary food therapy, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, and aromatherapy. Dr. Alinovi leads her own practice, Healthy Pawsibilities, and continues to treat 80 percent of her patients with adequate nutrition instead of prescriptions. Dr. Alinovi lives in Pine Village, Indiana.Susan Thixton is a pet food safety advocate and founder of the website TruthaboutPetFood.com that provides pet food education to pet owners. 24 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Avid cooks only By T. Allen My issue with this book is that you have to have the income of a veterinarian to buy the ingredients. Asparagus, oysters, shrimp, duck, salmon especially for the cats but even in half the dog recipes. Because of the need to balance nutrients you can not safely substitute ingredients within a recipe which further cuts back on the number of useable recipes when an animal is allergic to an ingredient (milk, wheat, eggs, etc) . I also was hoping for more in bulk recipes that could be frozen. Yes, you can multiply these but be aware these are big complicated recipes. If you don't love to cook and have a lot of time to spend doing it, this book is not for you.

Sadly, the index does NOT list alternative food-sources for nutrients for those of us who have to think outside the box. For example, the first page I turned to when I got this new version was the index looking for a food source of zinc that my cats will accept, and it's not spinach. I saw nothing… just zucchini. Very disappointed. Why would I buy the second one? Only because I was able to preorder it for $10 and I had high hopes that the improvements would be there. I want to add, however, that I was brought to these books by joining Petsumer Reports, which I highly recommend for anyone who loves and feed animals. Susan Thixton has a tough job dealing with corrupt pet food companies (which is most of them) and the AAFCO, which does not truly oversee quality, and I got one heck of an education for a mere $18. for a year. Please support her important work that is solely consumer funded because it's for our animal companions' food quality. Poisoned Pets is another good source of what's really in the pet food, and it's scary! Before the Purina Beneful dog food deaths, Susan's consumer-funded tests had already published the information on the multiple myotoxins linked to these preventable deaths. And it goes on… consumers need to stop blindly trusting companies based on pretty packaging and dyes. I'm grateful that she does this difficult job, and it takes all of us to finally make changes in the pet food industry. (Google Jerry's Story/rendering plants if you want a little preview - true story.)

Pasta and veggies with a little bit of meat By Ned Not bad, but most of the recipes seem to consist of 2 cups of cooked rice or pasta, a cup of veggies, and only 1/4 or 1/2 cup of cooked meat. Coming from a raw and grain-free diet, this feels really weird. I'm not sure about the claims of homemade food being healthy as ingredients like oysters can be crazy expensive. Most recipes call for eggs or poultry or both. My dog is allergic to these along with sweet potatoes and barley so I would be making substitutions all over the place trying to follow these recipes. I was told I could just substitute anything with anything, which makes me wonder how these recipes could be considered nutritionally complete. Loads of totally unverified claims about organic food being healthier.
