Outnumbered is a poignant and joyous romp into the world of a woman raising two schnauzer puppies in the beautiful, yet threatening, Appalachian Mountains. It quickly becomes apparent that Gus and Lucy are very different dogs. He radiates magnetic appeal but is naughty as Peter Rabbit; Lucy exudes joie de vivre until her hidden illness dampens her loving spirit. Together, they are a home demolition team. Isabel is determined to keep the puppies safe from the wildlife while giving them a life worth living. Yet, she wonders why these dogs are so different from her previous ones. Why are they so difficult to house train? Dog ownership reaches a crisis level as Isabel realizes the biggest threat to rearing two happy, healthy dogs is a battle within her own psyche.

By Amazon Customer This is the touching story of a well educated, single women who moves from her beloved Atlanta to a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains to pursue her interests in art and literature and to rekindle her life following a difficult divorce. Having abandoned her dream of retiring in the Dordogne in France, she seeks to overcome her lingering feelings of grief and occasional loneliness by adopting sibling male and female Schnauzer puppies as her new companions, but she quickly finds that her canines bind closely to each other and bring more challenges than solace. Whether it be destruction of her furniture, eating poisonous berries, adamantly rejecting house training, or getting lost is a snow storm, the “gooses,” as she calls her dogs, cause a cascade of catastrophes, interfering with her artistic interests and inexorably consuming her life. Despite all, she retains her innate patience, consults friends and dog behavior specialists and eventually finds a difficult but necessary solution. The story is autobiographical, and her descriptions of the mountains, their seasons and flora are vivid and graceful.

By Kitty Clark Manson Allen has written a joyous story of struggle within and without, as she learns to manage her 2 newly adoptive dogs: Lucy and Gus. Since Allen is an artist, she carries the reader through the story, by illustrious descriptions of the changes of the seasons, which brings the reader into the mountainous atmosphere. She allows one into her personal heartbreak and struggles, so the read is more profound than a simple dog story.

A Book for All Dog Lovers By Linda Arnold I laughed at the antics of these two precious dogs and the many trials that the author experienced as she attempted to train them. Her description of coming to the decision to give Gus away was heart rendering. I recommend this book to all dog lovers and particularly to those of us that think "man's best friends" are really humans. The book is well written and a joy to read. Linda
