Goldarnit...this makes me want to break down and finally get a kindle By Jane in Milwaukee I was tottering around needlework books and the words "Opus Anglicanum" caught my eye. And what is a "potted look?" So we must be seeing a Brit designer, huh? YES!! I clicked on the Look Inside! feature and she's talking about the Victoria & Albert Museum in London!! And the Syon Cope!! I study needlework and needlework history and as the author points out, the only place and time this term is appropriate--it's Latin for "England's Great Work"--is the height of medieval piety and needle arts.I've seen the Syon Cope. It's a glorious deep blue velvet with actual gold and silver sewn on. The darn thing weighs 80 lbs!! And it would have been meant to be worn by a little man no more than about 5' tall (they didn't have a lot of green, leafy vegetables in their diet then). This most gorgeous of ecclesiastical vestments would really pack a punch of symbolic meaning to the congregants. What a nice happenstance to run into this little thing. It's inexpensive. Check it out.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Just a glorified research paper. By Kindle Customer This is good only for a few facts on one specific Opus Anglicanum piece. It has little in the way of descriptions or pictures. The pictures it does have are line drawings that aren't even very good. While it does give some basic information on the subject, it stresses how it is only ecclesiastical, which the leading books on the subject state is not true. She also does a poor job of giving details about how other art influence Opus Anglicanum. She spends pages on how one stained glass is influenced by her one chosen piece, but only talks briefly on manuscripts influence (bad that only on lettering). If you want to know about Opus Anglicanum, look for "English Medieval Embroidery" by A.G.I. Christy or "English Embroidery" by Barbara Snook. Other places to look would be the Cloisters with the Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin has articles about it that are very informative.
