17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A patchwork of good ideas not fully utilized By Lost in Denver It's strange to give such a low rating to a story with so many promising elements. The world building was rich and detailed, and the primary Jeckyl/Hyde character of Eliza/Lizzie was absolutely fascinating. Eliza was the scientific, steady one while Lizzie was the passionate, devil-may-care type, and either of them could have been a wonderful protagonist in her own right, and watching them attempt to come to some sort of understanding was a treat to read.My frustration with this book was that Eliza/Lizzie was an amazing character who was utterly wasted. The woman/women were supposed to be inordinately clever, and yet were outsmarted and outmatched at every turn. Every major clue is basically handed to her by one of the male characters, all of whom seemed to be deceiving her and she was constantly in a state of surprise by this. She never really figured anything out until it was too late or until it was handed to her on a silver platter. I never really felt that she "bested" anyone. I don't want to have a protagonist made up to be a strong, female character, and then have her either need the aid of (or to be rescued by) her male counterparts, much less have her seem to be constantly duped. And the author spends so much time desperately throwing red herrings and false accusations into the mix that I was able to guess who the culprit was simply because this individual was the only one who DIDN'T have suspicion thrown their way.This could have been one of the best books that I'd read in a while, but the author just didn't do the story any justice with her remarkable main character.

The Diabolical Miss Hyde (Electric Empire #1) By Leeanna Chetsko THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE originally caught my attention because it looked like it had steampunk elements, fantasy, evil curses, magical forensics, and a dark twin. This is one of those books that's difficult to describe, but in a *good way.* Happily, the book had all it promised and more -- I'm already looking forward to the next book in the Electric Empire series.THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE is narrated in turn by Dr. Eliza Jekyll and Lizzie Hyde. Both are the same person, but with very different personalities and abilities. Those last names should sound familiar -- remember the classic Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? The author goes off that a bit, but makes it all her own.Viola Carr wrote Eliza and Lizzie so differently that I never had any trouble telling them apart. Although they share a body, they felt like two distinct characters, and their dual narration/personalities was probably my favorite part of the book. It can bug the heck out of me when an author switches perspective mid-chapter or even mid-scene, but it really worked here. I loved the way one would take over from another. At first, Eliza tries to keep Lizzie subdued with alchemy, and when Lizzie does get out, Eliza's relieved she can't remember anything Lizzie does. But over the course of THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE, Eliza begins to trust and rely on Lizzie, and vice versa.Dr. Eliza Jekyll is something of a forensic scientist, using her knowledge, experience, and gadgets to help the police solve crimes. Given the time period of an alternate London, many on the force aren't willing to work with her, but Eliza trudges onwards in the search for justice. The case in THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE is a gruesome one: a serial killer takes body parts from each victim with surgical precision. Why? The appearance of a Royal Society watchdog hampers the investigation. Does the Society suspect Eliza of using unorthodox science?The murder mystery was pretty twisty for me. The last quarter of THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE really surprised me, which is always something I enjoy.I would have liked more worldbuilding, because the glimpses I got to see were fascinating. There's an underworld of fae creatures, but other than a few scenes, we don't learn much about them. Sadface. I also wanted to know more about Eliza's London, where the crown decides what is allowed science and what is witchcraft. Sometimes, THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE felt like setup for the rest of the series, moving characters here and there, giving out this bit of vital information or that. Also, Eliza has a fascination with a killer she put away before the book started; I felt like I was missing some important background on the Todd/Eliza equation.Aside from a bit of nitpicking, I really enjoyed THE DIABOLICAL MISS HYDE. 12 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfully entertaining steampunk extension of the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story! By Karissa Eckert I got a copy of this book to review through Edelweiss. This was a wonderfully dark steampunk story with an investigative urban fantasy feel to it. I loved the characters, the world, and the plot. The story was very engaging and incredibly fun to read.Dr. Eliza Jekyll is the daughter of the notorious Henry. She is a doctor and works both as a crime scene investigator and as a doctor at the insane asylum Bethlam. She’s been helping to investigate a series of murders where women are found with their limbs chopped off, the murderer is being called the Chopper. Things get complicated when the Royal’s Captain Lafayette is put on the case as well, he has a side mission to prove that Eliza is a sorceress. Of course Eliza does have many dark secrets of her own, the main one being her Shadow persona...Lizzie. Eliza does a good job of keeping Lizzie locked away but once in a while Eliza has to take an elixir to let Lizzie out to play...This book reminds a bit of the Penny Dreadful TV series; it incorporates a number of characters from literature during the Victorian time period in London. Also our main heroine is generally very composed as Eliza but when Lizzie comes out to play things get pretty dark.Carr does a wonderful job of making Eliza and Lizzie two very different people. I really enjoyed reading about them both. Eliza is witty and smart and has all of these really nifty mechanical devices she likes to use. Eliza is struggling to make it as a woman doctor in an age where there just aren’t women doctors. Lizzie is all grit and sass and tough as nails and is a hoot to read about. The two have an interesting relationship together and I enjoy how they took care of each other and helped each other in their own ways.The description throughout the book is fantastic, it is easy to picture settings and characters. There are a number of interesting side characters. Sweeney Todd is in here and he is delightful evil, yet intriguing. Captain Lafayette also has many dark and intriguing secretes. Then there is the mysterious man that sponsors Eliza’s lodging...More than anything this book is just delightfully fun to read. It is gory and dark at points, but never over the top. The story does an excellent job of reflecting that Jack the Ripper era of London, but in an alternate history sort of way. Speaking of which this book is definitely set in an alternate London where there are Fey throughout the city who are seen as lesser citizens. I would have liked to see the world-building and history of this new and alternate London gone into a bit more, but that is really my only complaint about this book.Overall this book was wonderful fun and I can't wait to read the next book in this series. I love the characters in here and enjoy the setting of an alternate London. The book has a very investigative urban fantasy feel to it, but also has a lot of steampunk elements and some horror elements. I definitely recommend both to steampunk fans and urban fantasy fans. This is an excellent retelling/extension of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and it was great fun to read. I will definitely be reading more books in this series.
