While still dealing with the actual war in Viet Nam and the same infantry regiment, the more impressive work is that of what happened when the characters return home. Their trials and tribulations are sharply drawn by the author to create a vivid picture of post-combat life for those that served in our prolonged Southeast Asian conflict. Though a work of fiction, the real life experiences of the author again shine through.

I have read both of these books and the first was very good and as I suspected the second was better than the first. This book has it all and I do not think anyone would not enjoy this read. Waiting patiently for the next book from this author.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thought-provoking and captivating. By Jimmy Dean This is an excellent novel that deals not only with war itself, but the difficulty that soldiers face when re-integrating back into society. It deals with survivor's guilt, PTSD, and other important and relatable issues and themes. Veterans will see much of themselves in the characters, and no doubt will shed some cathartic tears along the way. Civilians will get a much-needed glimpse into what those who fought for our freedom went through not only on the battlefield, but in the battlefield that is life after getting back from the war.If you have read Pointman I, this one has a more deliberate, steady pace. The feel of the novel is quite different, yet still feels like what the sequel should be. Whereas the first book is more focused on action and battle scenes, this one focuses on the internal war of the main character. The characters continue to be complex, and there are many deep ideas that inspire passionate talk at book club meetings. This book doesn't seek to answer questions to life's problems or provide resolution that can't be given--rather, we are given a picture of reality: a dark reality that is nevertheless filled with hope.Once again, Owens dares the reader to do something difficult: imagine the darkness that any soldier who has fought to stay alive (during war and after returning) must deal with on a daily basis.
