Debbie Jacobs (CPDT-KA, CAP and finalist in the 2008 Dog Writers Association of America Writing Competition) introduces the most effective and humane ways to help fearful, shy or anxious dogs. A guide to the philosophy and techniques for working with fearful, shy or anxious dogs, the book dispels common myths and misinformation regarding fear based behaviors. It provides, in easy to understand language, the most effective and humane ways to handle dogs with fear based behavior challenges. Very useful information and full of resources for shelters, foster care givers, rescue organizations and veterinarians. While volunteering at the Humane Society of Louisiana's Camp Katrina after the hurricane of 2005, Debbie met Sunny, a border collie mix rescue from a 477 dog hoarding site, She had him transported to her home in Vermont, where he spent the first month cowering in a corner. Thus began the journey of helping Sunny escape from his fears. It was a journey of discovery for Jacobs too. She learned that changing a dog's fear-based behaviors often begins by changing the way we think about the dog. She learned to change her expectations and see Sunny for who he was, not who she thought he should be. And she discovered the most effective and humane ways to help him and other dogs like him. While moving heaven and earth to help Sunny, her extremely fearful dog, Debbie Jacobs became an expert on fearful dogs. A Guide to Living With & Training a Fearful Dog is an excellent book for anyone whose life includes a dog who is afraid. It combines explanations of techniques to use with fearful dogs, information on the many resources available to help them, ad a feeling of hope. Because Jacobs lived it, she understands what it's like to work with a dog who is scared in a way so few people do. Her caring, sharing interest in assisting others who want to help a dog overcome fears comes through in every part of this book, and because she's such an excellent writer, it's a pleasure to read. --Karen B. London, Ph. D., CAAB, CPDT-KA

Jacobs offers numerous common sense and creative suggestions for working not only with a dog whose fear is extreme and detrimental, but also with a fairly well adjusted dog who has perhaps inexplicably developed a fear of children, or a dog who suddenly doesn't want to get in the family car. Many of the exercises she recommends are so clearly sound that you think to yourself, "That's such a good idea, why didn't I think of it?" And that's a tribute not only to her knowledge, but also to her writing which is both seamless and often humorous.Above all, I appreciate this book because it helped me work in an upbeat and positive manner with my own dogs in managing their sometime fear related idiosyncratic behavior.

30 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Not much information By Kari Moneyhun You can probably find more helpful information in a five minute google search. The book is only 50-some pages and is filled up by the author's history of adopting a fearful dog, a recommendation to get your dog checked by the vet, definitions of training terms, a list of treats, a list of toys, and then then the advice to work with a trainer. I was hoping for some more direction on dealing with my fearful dog that we just adopted from a shelter. If I new I was paying $20 for someone to tell me to work with a trainer, I would have saved my money and called a trainer.

Flick Debbie wrote the book she wished she could have read when she adopted her fearful Katrina refugee, Sunny. I have a fearful dog and Debbie's book is an invaluable resource. She packs a lot of sound advice into this thin volume as well as some much needed hand-holding, something fearful dog owners need on occasion given the frustration and challenges, and, yes, rewards of helping a fearful dog. One of the most important contribution this book makes to working with fearful dogs is to dispel the massive amount of misguided information that passes for gospel. For example, if a fearful dog barks and lunges at a stranger who suddenly reaches out to pet her on the head she's not trying to "dominate" them. She's screaming "Go away!" and her behavior is beyond her control. Debbie offers many suggestions for changing our fearful dog's brains, literally, and for teaching them the skills they need to navigate the world more comfortably. She also provides a dose of reality: adjust your expectations. You're fearful dog isn't likely to "just get over it." But, with Debbie helping you help your dog, your pup is likely to build confidence and enjoy life as much as she can.
