Poorly written, very little information By James Allen This book is almost completely devoid of any useful information. To begin with, the author has no grasp whatsoever of the English language, and is clearly not a native speaker of English. It is OK to not be a native speaker, but if that is the case, then have someone proofread the book for you and check your English. That shouldn't be that difficult to find. The book is clearly self-published on Amazon, and self-publishers want to save as much money as possible, since they have to do everything themselves. But a proofreader would have been a great investment, because it would prevent this book from being the joke that it is. I read some of the more humorous passages to my girlfriend and we had a good laugh at them.As for the information, you have got to be kidding me. The information is sparse in this very short book, and you have to wade through a lot of useless nonsense before you even get to anything like information. And no details are ever given about anything. An example would be chapter 2, "Buying a gun from a store." This two-page chapter says that you have to choose a gun that is appropriate for you, then to bring home the point, invokes the incongruous image of an 80-year old lady walking out of a gun store with "a huge automatic assault rifle that looks like the one used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Terminator movies." So now that it's been established that you should find the right gun for yourself, a normal, well-written book would then go into the details of what kind of gun you should get depending on your needs. But not this book. It just leaves you to your own devices as far as figuring out what type of gun to get. Talking about price, it says, "Expect that some guns will be more expensive than others." (Really? I thought all guns were exactly the same price.)Do you see how this book is mostly filler, with little actual information?Much of the book is like this chapter, with some general concepts and no explanations and no details, especially when it comes to handguns. Terms and concepts are used and never explained. For example, there is a section on "sub-gauge inserts and sub-gauge tubes," which discusses the different types but never even stops to explain what "sub-gauge inserts" and "sub-gauge tubes" are. The word "caliber" is used often but never explained.I could go on and on about the inadequacy of this book, but I think you get the idea. I thought I should write this review so other people don't fall into the trap of buying it, Unfortunately, Amazon reviews have absolutely no credibility any more. This book is clearly self-published on Amazon, and self-publishers have all kinds of ways to buy reviews and pay people to write good reviews. Many of the ones for this book are written in the same bad English as the book itself, which makes me wonder if the author had a hand in writing many of the reviews himself. But I guarantee you all these five-star reviews could not have been written by people who innocently bought the book and were impressed by the information it contains. Read the reviews carefully and you'll see that many of them state "I got this book for free", possibly in return for a good review? As stated above, we did get a good laugh out of it, so if you want to make fun of a person who failed English composition, then this is the book for you. Here are some gems:"You may have your own reasons for wanting to get a gun and maybe you can add your reasons if it isn't mentioned in the list below.""You know the adage, it's not really the gun that matters but it's the man behind the gun that makes all the difference" (sorry, I'm afraid I haven't heard that one)"A gun that will stay in the glove compartment of your car should be something that is much more compact than a hunting rifle." (Really? Are you sure I can't get my hunting rifle in the glove compartment?)In the section that discusses the laws of different states, the author capitalizes "State" every time."The larger calibers can work out expensive for ammunition""Before you go to a gun store and buy your very first gun, you have to think of the reasons why you have to buy one. Gun ownership is a huge responsibility and you have to have pretty good reasons why you're going to get one."I guess the explosion of self-publishing has its advantages, as it allows people to put their work out there without having to wait for a publisher to like it. But it also allows anyone with no credentials to throw together any old garbage, put up a bunch of five-star reviews, and call themselves an author.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Guns 101 By Jane Lewis The book is a well-written guide to people who wants to purchase guns. It has loads of information that you need to know before purchasing a gun. It talks in details on how to find the perfect gun that matches your need and your personality. The best thing about this book are the discussions on possible reasons for purchasing a gun and the safety measures and reminders when owning a gun. These are very relevant topics that should be included in books that talks about guns. Although at some point I find the book a bit dragging to read because it's too long but I still think this book is quite informative and a must-read. I'm lucky to have a free copy of this book.
