Expert swordsmen Basilio and Alejo have one last mission before they go their separate ways: they must recover their teacher Don Manuel's ancient fighting manual and take it to remote Cataluña in order to have it translated by the famous alchemist Paracelsus. Unbeknownst to them, however, Don Manuel has been murdered, and a host of powerful forces has come looking for the coveted book – everyone from old lovers and lifelong archenemies to the King's assassin, and the Spanish Inquisition. The adventures of Basilio and Alejo usher in a new era of adventures in Foreworld, one wherein the Shield-Brethren, the fabled warrior monks of the medieval era, have been stricken from history. Old traditions are threatened and long-standing secrets are in danger of being revealed.

This is an interesting and well-written story, which stands apart from the other stories in the Foreworld Saga. In a number of ways. The heart of the Saga is the Mongoliad, a single book in three volumes, boasting no fewer than seven co-authors-- a grand and remarkably successful endeavor. The story, set in an 'alternate history' only a little different from our own world, largely concerns the adventures of members of the Ordo Militum Vindicis Intactae (Military Order of the Virgin Defender), also known as the Shield-Brethren-- a military religious order of celibate knights, much like the Knights Templar or Hospitaller, only far older. Whereas the latter two orders were founded around 1100 AD, the Shield-Brethren in the Foreworld Saga date back to pre-Christian ancient Greece, and the original Defending Virgin in the title was Athena, while a northern branch later saw the virgin goddess in question as Freya; at the time the Mongoliad takes place (1241) it is at least nominally a Christian order dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, although not all members of the order are particularly Christian in their faith. In the Kindle editions, the three volumes each include a short story/novella: Sinner in the first, Dreamer in the second, and Seer in the third book of the trilogy. Each of the added stories (which, curiously, precede the main narrative) are 'prequels' to the events in the Mongoliad, casting light on one or more characters' earlier lives adventures. Each of those three prequels can easily stand alone, as can the next three: The Lion in Chains, The Shield Maiden (not a typical prequel, as it takes place decades or even centuries before the 13th Century events of the Mongoliad), and The Beast of Calatrava (which takes place a mere generation before).Which brings us to The Book of Seven Hands. As with the prequels, this too is called a SideQuest. However, it might better be called a fore-quest, as this story, while still in our past (albeit in the alternate history), is set some three hundred years after the events of the Mongoliad, and at a time the Shield-Brethren are apparently gone from the world; a further differences is that this is only the second of the SideQuest novellas not written at least in part be one of the seven co-authors of the Mongoliad. The plot line covers the attempts of various groups with varying agendas to get hold of a book reputed to teach the fighting techniques of the now semi-mythic Shield-Brethren, and like the rest is absolutely worth reading (although not before reading the Mongoliad, in order to better understand this story). I'd have given it four and a half stars if I could-- I docked it a point because, despite being a "SideQuest", it neither includes members of the Shield-Brethren (or the Binders), nor does it truly further the story of either.

Brilliant dialogue and masterful swordplay between complex and engaging characters. It is smart, suspenseful, and sometimes hilarious. I relished every minute in this world and longed for more.My only lament is that it's over. I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters. I grew so fond of Alejo, Basilio, and Padrona. In fact I've read Chapter 2 three times (including once aloud to my 10 year old son). It's one of those stories you think about for days afterward. I will be re-reading it and passing it along to friends -- especially friends who loved Game of Thrones and The Princess Bride. This is my first venture into the Foreworld Saga, and it has drawn me in. I'm eager to explore this world further. I can only hope the other books are this compelling.

I don't know Barth Anderson, but I've chatted with a few of the other Foreworld authors. The Book of Seven Hands is easily my favorite of the Foreworld stories I've read so far. Compelling characters, a real sense of pathos and urgency, excellent fight scenes, great pacing, etc. The tragicomic style reminded me a little of The Princess Bride and Don Quixote. It helps if you know a little about the Foreworld Saga, but you really don't need to. (In fact, this story is as good a place as any to start.)
