About the Author James Talbot graduated from the University of Western Australia and, later, Murdoch University with a determination to discover more of his country's shadow history. By Zeb Having absorbed the first two novels in this series I awaited the third with impatience. The wait was well rewarded. The characters are filled out the intrigue gets deeper and the author has given me , an old Aussie some rare glimpses of what we are. The arrogance of McArthur as he struts about setting himself up as a grandee is a precursor to a section of the Australian society ending in the Menzies era of politics that only fell apart in the late 1970's. But the colour and description gave me visual depictions' of characters of kindly former brothers in arms the convict and the marine as they celebrated each other and remembered their dead from the American war of Independence.There is the arrival of the 'Neptune' not with food for the starving colony but with its cargo of rotting and insane human survivors kept with the dead below decks for the entire voyage from the UK to be flung over the side as they approached the colony and the heroic efforts by the convicts present there to rescue them by making what shelter they could in belting rain and light fires to give warmth to the wretched souls. The near suicidal act by "Mrs" Catherine Brandon who struck the union jack from the parade ground flag pole and draped it about her convincing two marine drummers to strike up "Hearts of Oak" and heads up march in beat past the marines 'quarters" to inspire them from the sharp edge of mutiny to instant action to help save as many of the lives as they could."The Devil to Pay" is a late night read and it was 0230 some nights before I could put it down.

First Settlement in New South Wales - an alternative view By Jennifer Hoskins The second in a very alternative view of the first settlement in New South Wales, Australia. Deeply researched and non-romantic. For convicts and soldiers alike, life was gritty. Excellent character development.
